[RELz] Sheogorath Statue

Ok guys, so I've decided to tackle the Sheogorath statue.

I'm using modexo's excellent concept for the outfit: http://cghub.com/images/view/782732/

The question now, however, is the pose.  Modexo has a posed version of the statue, and I'm using that, but I'd really like to do something more ridiculous, so here was my initial idea:

But the cheese was not well received universally, and I'd like to make everyone happy.

So, should I keep the pose but use something different (like a fork?) or just use a simpler pose?  Or use both, and make them change (like a different one when the quest is complete)?

Finally, here's the a block in for the other pose.  Still needs to be made a little less stiff and detailed, but I'm done for tonight and this is an idea of where I'm headed.

why not have him hold the fork of horripilation, with a chunk of cheese on the end of the fork? better than it floating IMO

First off I love the design,

First off I love the design, great work to you and Modexo.  I think that the statue itself should be quite serious and the expression of Sheogorath should be quite casual, in order to have order within chaos.  Though I love the idea of him with cheese and a fork I think that a serious version perhaps with insane offerings at an altar may be better. Kudos good sir.  May the knights of order never find you

It's not floating. I hadn't made the hands yet at that point :p

I have to say that I like the straight-laced version where he looks normal. It doesn't convey crazy in anyway, which I think makes it more powerful, since anyone who has played the series know how crazy he really is. I do agree with Yours Truly that the crazy offerings will definitely add a good contrast and be made that much more insane with a serious statue. Amazing work on the model, by the way.

I believe his serious

I believe his serious appearance is a lure, that outside of the Isles he tends to appear as a waistcoated banker to draw in unsuspecting mortals into a mad, chaotic state of mind. When in the Isles, however, he has his split-colored regalia and catlike eyes. That appearance is how he is portrayed in Daggerfall, as well as his statues in both Oblivion and Skyrim, and so I would go with the cane stance.

I like the idea of him having a fork suddenly in that hand behind his back after you've brought him offerings.  Few would probably notice, but those who do would then wonder if it had been there the whole time...

Not to mention it is likely

Not to mention it is likely that the statue was not made by men, but is in fact a manifestation of the god's power on nirn.  It appears as a sane man because sheogorath wills it to. The model looks great though

Well, it's sort of both.  It was definitely carved by someone, but that's not to say they can't manifest through it.  Boethiah's shrine is destroyed at the beginning of the game, with only its head at the bottom of the sea.  His daedric quest is to find someone capable of carving a new one.

This please. I just like the idea of the statue changing subtly after you complete his daedric quest. Heck, it would be great if we could pull this off with a few other statues too! I just love the idea of easter eggs like this :)

Granted, I only state that since I find it unlikely that this particular statue was carved, partially because of skyrim's shrine to clavicus vile, which magically changes once the quest is completed, and that vile states he is trapped in.

i second this, (or third at this point) i think that'd be an awesome easter egg. perhaps have him with a normal facial expression before the quest, and a crazy one after, to fit with the way he appears normal at first to lure mortals.

That's actually a really cool

That's actually a really cool idea, to have it swap out as you do the quest, maybe some other subtle changes can occur around the shrine, like clutter moved to a different area, as a sign that the player may be going mad from Sheogorath's influence. Or maybe even bigger changes, like the exit hallway being swapped out for a longer one with some turns in it or something. But I would keep it to just Sheo's shrine.

Well I'm convinced.  The cheese must go. I really like the backhand having a fork, however.  I'll model that and keep it separate so it's easy to add/takeout.

Here's the continued progress.

Edit: And here he is slightly taller looking (I just shrunk his head).  Opinions?

Just remember that the Fork of Horripilation is a a carving fork and not a table fork.

Nah, I think keeping the srsbsns face is good.  New players should have no idea what they're in for when they come up to his shrine.

Looks great. I think it would be cool if you added something slightly off to the statue. Not something obvious (and honestly a little overdone) like cheese, but something subtle that implies the followers who built the statue were losing their minds. I can't really say what though, because I think the statue looks very good as it is right now and any major alterations would be unnecessary.

At the base, maybe you can add some mushrooms and flowers from Mania on one half, with fungi and weeds from Dementia on the other?

Again, While the idea is a good one, that really should be reserved for decoration and the shrine room,  instead of the statue design itself. Sheogorath should appear as sane as possible, at least on the statue, in order to lure in unsuspecting mortals. Also the idea of adding all of this to the statue base sounds overly complex, and could take too long.  The current design looks great, partially because of its simplicity.  Instead let all of that be decided by whoever designs the statue's shrine.

I'm not going to work with the base.  I don't know if all the statues will use the same or what.

Here's progress.  Calling the pants finished.

Best statue of Sheo I've ever

Best statue of Sheo I've ever seen!

Well, that's not hard I guess, considering I've only seen it twice before, once in Morrowind and (I think) once in Oblivion.

But regardless, it is an excellent statue by anyone's standards.

Well, I suppose the only

Well, I suppose the only thing that i would like to see is the statue showing Sheogorath's dementia side and mania side. (i.e cracks, lichen, moss, darker, etc). On the mania side would be cleaner, nicer, brighter, etc. Might add some character but not really essential though.

Just to bum you guys out heres the original voice acting for sheogorath in Morrowind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmxzKRXlO3k

It's looking really good and

It's looking really good and I love that beard, but I would dial back that droopy sleeve. It reminds me of the puffy shirt episode of Seinfeld "But I don't want to be a pirate!"

Most of you are too young to get that reference.

After a few days gone I came

After a few days gone I came back today and finished it up mostly.  Tomorrow I'll finish the hands and staff, bake down and texture.  Should be easy since this a statue.

The sleeves aren't perfect, but this a statue and I figure it'll do.

Good catch, sorry about that.  Clearly I need sleep.

I'll probably have to do more work to fix up the back, but I wasn't saying anything because I wasn't showing any pics. :P

EDIT: Actually, I'm going to do the sleeves right.  I'll redo them tomorrow.  Incidentally, if anyone has good reference pics for those sleeves, please post here.

Personally I love this design

Personally I love this design for the statue. He looks very foreign to the Dunmer, very dapper, and like he's hiding something behind his back. I do feel like he should be holding something in his hand, and the fork is the obvious choice. Alternatively, it could be a mini version of the Ministry of Truth, as he is attributed to causing that to fall out Vivec. Gives hime more of a rascal persona, like he's holding it behind him so he can throw it at whoever he's talking to.
