[ARMOR CONCEPT] Nordic Trollbone Cuirass

Hey guys, So I am teaming up with a fellow concept artist (Chaos Child) to make the Nordic Trollbone Cuirass. This is my first sketch for it, and Chaos will post hers on here at some point as well, eventually we will post our final sketch with all of our combined ideas, and then move on to the finished concept. The helmet has already been designed by someone else, and I only put it in there to give an idea of the full set, and to try to follow it's design. Anyway, here's my idea for it, lemme know what you guys think.

Really don't like the look of

Really don't like the look of those eyestalk things, I have to say. Hope you can come up with something better. Everything else looks pretty good though.

As I said in the description,

Like I said in the description I didn't come up with the helmet design, and it is already modeled. So nothing I can do about the eye stalks. The only reason the helmet is there is because I need to design the armor around that.

I love your concept here

I love your concept here Bigjon.  It kind of reminds me of the Lord of Bones from Game of Thrones.

6 years ago I made this:

Probably irrelevant now, but may give you some more ideas. I think going for a rough tribal look and keeping the usage of metal as minimalistic as possible might be a good idea.

Helmet was inspired by Kurgan from Highlander:

That looks great so far, it

That looks great so far, it reminds me of these sketches made by an artist called Fetsch on deviant art. I would try to add some features though that better display its Nordic origins like adding some Nordic runes or even just more fur, but that's entirely up to you. Keep up the amazing work ;)

Rough concept sketch of the

Rough concept sketch of the Nordic Troll Bone Armor. Working in conjunction with Bigjon.

Troll Bones; shoulder blades, spine, ribs, pelvis, coccyx, and skull. Jaw halves, metacarpals/metatarsals, and spinal disks as decoration. Over Leather and Fur, with chainmail "shawl", under fur capelet.

Enjoy! ~ Alexandra

Looks really cool! However,

Looks really cool! However, and I don't usually say this, but I think it should be a little bit chunkier - troll bones would be pretty big and at the moment these look like human bones, and not overly-protective. And possibly the attachment points should look a little more robust. I love the overall direction though.

Hello again! SO Chaos child

Hello again! SO Chaos child and I have fully fleshed out our ideas and we are down to decide on a singular, final design for the Nordic Trollbone Armor. This is my concept, I added some metal plating and bulked it up more so that it really had the look of a "heavy" armor piece. Let us know what you think =)

Second rough concept for

Second rough concept for Nordic Trollbone. Please keep in mind that this set will not have gloves or shoes, this may make the design seem off.

Revised previous design to appear heavier, troll bones over metal plates, decorative leather straps, links, and studs to hold bones in place, multi layered fur, chain mail, and armor skirting. Vertebrae, jaw halves, metacarpals/metatarsles, and teeth as decoration.

Please let us know which design you prefer over all, and which elements for each you prefer as we will be combining the two into one next time.

Thanks for any feedback! ~ Alexandra

I feel a little intimidated

I feel a little intimidated posting, ive been following this project for years but I never joined in the discussions. I was just playing Morrowind again and it suddenly occurred to me that is would be a disservice to such a great game if i didn't at least do something even if that something is just an opinion here and there.

I love that center vertebrae piece in the first sketch, there is just something about the way the shoulders flow into that large three piece bone center with the sharp bone accents coming out. It makes it feel intimidating and heavy like the armor itself is a weapon.

Everyone here is doing an amazing job!

I prefer ChaosChild's design

I prefer ChaosChild's design overall. Some of my favorite elements are the fur shoulder cape with the chainmail shawl underneath, and the vertebrae up the back. I also prefer that the troll skull on the other shoulder doesn't have the lower jaw.

I like the vertebrae on the

I like the vertebrae on the back in ChaosChild design. As for the rest, I much prefer Bigjon's. I like the skull on the shoulder and the fact that it's mixed with metal. Also, you can feel the bones more. Overall, it looks more clunky, which I think fits better. I do not like the fur cloak on ChaosChild's design, because it looks very unpractical, also because it's too "cute". The collar is also way too fancy in my opinion.

I really like both concepts.

I really like both concepts.  As far as the bulk of the armor is concerned, however, I think something in between the two would be ideal.

I like the heavy look of

I like the heavy look of BigJon's, could definitely take some punishment. Though there's a little less bone then there ought to be, I think.

God that helmet's so bleh. Who designed that? They need glasses or something.

I much prefer Chaos Child's

I much prefer Chaos Child's design - BigJon's to me looks too 'Skyrim-y' (hard to say why), and the metal plates make the troll bones seem obsolete. Also many of the smaller bones do not look like the leather straps would really hold them on. I like the more tribal feel of Chaos Child's design, with the more extensive use of fur and trinkets (because this armour is clearly as much about showing off that you've slain a troll as it is about protection), and greater coverage of bone that appears more functional, and also the skull on the shoulder having the jaw bone removed. And you've got to love the layered look!

Both are excellent, I just personally prefer the more tribal/less Skyrim feel that I think the project is going in in general. Seriously, great work both of you!

I prefer the elements in

I prefer the elements in BigJon's. I'd go with his design, with some fur trim poking out the edge of the arms as in Chaos Child's. Perhaps not quite as long as in her's. The spinal column back is a solid idea as well which I think would carry over well to BigJon's.

I like the mix of steel and bone, but I agree with some of the comments that it could have the bone dominating a bit in parts; I don't think the steel overlaps are needed for the thighs - bones alone would be fine.

The alternative shoulder could be more refined. Maybe have it Nordic 'ring-mail' or rib-parts in parallel? Just something to give it more definition as a material.

The collar area on chaos

The collar area on chaos-child's looks weird in my opinion.
I like the fact that the jaw bone has been kept, but maybe it would look better if broken or separated.

The vertebrae on the back of CC's armor look good.
Avoid dangly stuff. They won't make it in game.
I think i recognize a coccyx on CC's chestplate. Makes me giggle, and maybe i would avoid the pointy end to prevent clipping issues.
I think you should both add more bones. Maybe going for more hide and less fur could work too.

No female version of this armor concept shall be made.

People, remember that this is not a contest between two people, these are two people working together. Let's keep the best of both worlds.

We could use both of the

We could use both of the concepts, as they are both quite similar. Male and female versions. It would only be minor tweaks between the two

No worries, we are aware that there is no separate "female" design for this armor. However once the design is finalized we will be depicting it on both Sexes to ensure the design works on both body types. If not, the finished armor might simply stretch or contract design elements over model attributes, making it look cheap or unrealistic. Much in the same way armor looks on models in world of warcraft some of the time, just a spray over a body.

Don't worry, we are aware

Don't worry, we are aware that there's no separate costumes for the genders. We will however be depicting the final design on both sexes to assist the 3D designer, just like the original Skyrim concepts.

I prefer to see a version

I prefer to see a version without bone mask.
