[NOT RELEVANT - ARMOR CONCEPT] orcish shield

So I started this a while before the new concept art workflow was established, and since I was the one to design the armor set itself I bypassed the stages of considering "what was the thought process behind it". Feel free to crap all over it if you want anyway.

Obviously pretty rough, still need to polish it up if it's to be a final concept. For silhouette I picked simply a round shield. It was the shield shape in Oblivion, which in my opinion was the best rendition of that shield. I despise the idea of a big metal rectangle with oversized spikes. Here's the references:

Oblivion:

Ottoman shields:

Armor concept:

Most likely your first complaint will be that this shield "too bland" and "not badass enough". I agree, I'm thinking about ways to break up the silhouette or adding something for a "wow" effect, but without losing its essence totally - I still want it to be full metal and large, which simply goes well with the "steppe" style of the armor. I also incorporated some decoration the armor has. Feel free to post your ideas, but keep in mind at some point decisions will have to be made.

I think its fine, only thing

I think its fine, only thing that stand out to me is the color palette when compared to the armor. Some red trims might be enough to make it look more like the armor.

Colour palette of the actual

Colour palette of the actual in-game model of this armor is slightly different from the concept, I'll think about it some more though.

Shield is cool and fits good

Shield is cool and fits good to the armor imo. Will there be a tower shield in this section too? Because Zdenatz`s "stell shield"-thread had a great shape for it maybe:

The shield in the concept

The shield in the concept looks good, but small. I'm not sure what scale you were planning on, but I think huge would fit very well with the orcish style, something like the spartan shields from 300. I really liked the orcish sword in skyrim; the design made it look like just a sharpened hunk of metal with a leatherbound grip. Obviously this doesn't really fit with the master craftmanship of the orc smiths, but if we're able to translate that sense of raw strength and power, I think that will really make the armour feel right, and I think a big shield would do this. Just imagine an orcish berserker charging at you, shield raised and hammer swinging, an unstoppable mass of metal and rage.

I also think a spiked boss would be good, just to add to the aggressive feel, as well as fitting with the helmet and pauldrons of the armour.

FDT2: There was only one

FDT2: There was only one orcish shield in Morrowind and it was like a tower one, perhaps having two is okay, but that's up to 3D if they want to make it.

The00Devon: I'll consider it, but I just despise the idea of huge hunky metal shields. Even the actual Greek hoplons suited only for fighting in tight static formations were wood covered with pretty thin bronze (no thicker than 1mm, too little for standalone). I get that orcs are strong, but there have to be better ways to show that, other than going full Warcraft on them. And I didn't like their swords in Skyrim for exactly the same reason you did :P A spike on the boss is fine to have, definetly.

Hmm, i think the shape is

Hmm, i think the shape is fine,it simply lacks decoration. Orcs are known as master smiths and ES orsimer have always reminded me of samurai, hence why I provided this photo.

Maybe change it to something more orcish (not much change needed :-p ), but I really like the intimidating feel of this and of course the master craftsmanship that resembles that of an Orc.

Alright, taking the feedback

Alright, taking the feedback into consideration I made something like this:

Piglet is an orky thing, it's on the armor, looks very similar to that linked Japanese shield and its snout can be pointy enough to be bashy-stabby. I did a colour experiment too, with red paint and some copper coating. Probably more variety in the colour of metal is what I should've considered for the orcish armor, but it's most likely too late for that (though perhaps diffuse map corrections would be enough to create cool looking contrasts, might look into it myself at some point).

I made a variant of the back with silk coating, surely something more interesting can be done there, but let's get the front done first.

That looks pretty good to me,
That looks pretty good to me, Dragomir. The pig head could be slightly bigger. But that's personal preferences though.

I think matching icons on the

I think matching icons on the shield and the cuirass doesn't add much variety. If I remember well, each orcish armour is supposed to be unique, and matching outfits will give the impression that all these guys are from the same family or something.

I like the fact that you avoided the over the top effect of the Morrowind's shield.

Yet, I liked the fact that it was extremely alien, almost like the Daedric shield.

That kind of sculpture could work fine, maybe inpired by No.

You could add animalistic features to that kind of face.

Even if it's something I would save for last, the inside of the shield could use a lot more work. People tend to fight with 1st person view, and only one material would look pretty weird. Especially for a ceremonial armour. Some patterns for the silk could be interesting too.

Keep it up!
