As some of you are aware, Oblivion has a major glitch in the animation system. When playing for more than 200 hours, animations begins to stuff up, some of you probably have experienced this and trust me, you'll know when you see it. This is associated with a single byte apparantly and a counter, when this "counter" reaches 49 animations begins to stuff up...
Anyway Oblivion Animation Fixer was a godsend for me however does not work.... Opening up the inventory/journal and then closing it will freeze the game, and of course opening it up pauses the game but exiting it still remains frozen, if you HAVE used Animation Fixer before aand familer with it, anyone know how to fix it? If you experienced this problem of the game freezing AFTER closing the journal and fixed it how do you fix it?
Thank you
I have no idea what you are talking about with the journal thing.
Wrye Bash can fix the Animation Bomb, and there are other programs as well. I personally use one called "Abomb Fixer" but do not have a link to it handy.
Just do a search on Nexus; this is a well known and documented problem.
I've encountered the animation problem, and the fixer worked like a charm. Had no side effects that I'm aware of - I used it, then thought no more of it.
My game has an absolute ton of mods installed, dunno if one of these "helped" prevent the issue you're seeing. The most likely one to help you would be Windom Earle's Oblivion Crash Prevention System - this one has killed the CTDs I got every single time I tried to quit the game, and so presumably is shielding me from other crashes as well. It doesn't work for everyone, though, so I'd recommend backing up your saves before trying it.
Failing that, I can only offer guesses as to things to try and consider.
Does it matter which journal page you open/close? For eg, if you open the display directly to your character stats, then close it, will it crash the same as if you'd gone directly to the map and closed that? (To memory, the F1/F2/F3/etc buttons can be used to jump directly to a certain page... or was it just 1/2/3/etc?)
If you change cells before opening the journal, does that help?
If you save to a different slot, exit to the main menu, then load the new save, is that still affected?
What happens when you close the journal? Does the background music stall? Can you see the mouse pointer? Can you bring the journal, or any other menu, back onto the screen? Any error messages?
Does it make a difference if you run the game with/without OBSE?
Well technically its not a "Crash" it doesnt end up exiting and a window popping up and saying that "Oblivion has crashed" or something similar, it just... "Freezes"... But ill give Windom Earle's Oblivion Crash Prevention System a try. I used to use this but it does corrupt save files which is why i avoid it.
Also I did change cells before opening up the journal. And still does freeze. And no, doesnt matter which part of the journal, still has the same effect. Upon closing, the music still runs until it ends, it just freezes I can't open up console, cant bring up the menu or anything at all! I've tested this on another computer with the Oblivion and still the game freezes even when closing the journal.
The game does run fine, main menu works (the one where you exit the game, change resolution and such). The actual gameplay works, opening up the journal works and navigating around works, closing it will freeze the game with the music still running as I said until it ends, it does not play the next music.
I'll try test this without script extender and let you know asap. Also I use "DarNified UI" which makes the journal items smaller, text smaller, dialogue text smaller etc... So I'll disable that see if it works too.
My byte is on 48 with 135 hours of gameplay, I predict I have 70 or so hours until it reaches the magical 49!
Wyre Bash has helped me with this. Once installed you can click on your save (from the saves tab) and click 'repair abomb'. It tells you if you need it. Then you can 'repair abomb'. It takes two seconds and poof. You're good to go. I'm on save 1379 with 322 hours. I clicked repair once (it was hideous before; I was at 101%) and after Wyre Bash did its thing (in literally five seconds) I've been good to go since. Plus this isn't a mod affecting the game, so there is no performance loss. I've had trouble with most Crash Prevention mods, though I do use Clean Quit.
Wyre Bash:

Hope this helps!
i've never used wyre bash and i hear its complicated to install Ive got oblivion mod manager and thats all i got really and of course oblivion script extender duh haha..
Anyway the problem is associated with Oblivion Script Extender. I loaded a saved game without OBSE and saved it, did the fix and presto! Works! However even saving AFTER running the fix without OBSE and then loading OBSE the problem persists. I'll probably give wyre bash a try hopefully I dont mess things up even more! If it helps im running v20 OBSE
Ya, I'd reccomend trying Wyre Bash. I got around to trying it just recently (after using obmm) and really liked it. I don't think its much more complicated than obmm, and I'm pretty sure its non-invasive. Try it out and see what you think. I think your OBSE should be great: it just needs abomb repair by wyre bash. I don't think you can mess things up worse with bash, because its a seperate program just like obmm.
After all, if Sephoroth played video games, I'm sure he'd use wyre bash to remove his abomb.
lol
It would be nice to know if Wrye Bash conflicts with OBMM before trying to solve this!
I'm using OBMM and trying to solve the Abomb with OAF, which it did - once. However, now being stck with a save in Chappel Undercraft (Knights Of The Nine) it seems useless for whatever reason (does OAF not work with expansions?) and therefore considering Wrye. Anyway, perhaps I've yet to experience the inventory crash as I've not seen it (being off topic?) but animations freezez all the same! Will try out Windom Earl's though!
GOD HOW THIS GAME IS ALMOST REDICULOUSLY BUGGY!! .. and a GREAT thanks to the number people solving them!
The animation fixer has nothing to do with recognizing expansions. It just fixes a counter, irrespective of wher ein the game you are.
Wrye Bash installation is easy as hell, so no point in becoming afraid if it. Also, Wrye Bash does not "conflict" with OBMM. Wrye Bash is a superior program that might seem complicated, but if you are using it to get certain things done, it is a matter of following simple instructions.
Here is a link on Nexus for Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide. Follow the instructions. Fixing ABomb is simple as right-clicking on your save and selecting "Repair ABomb". There, done.
