A few questions.

I've been following Skywind for a while now and have decided that I really want to help, I have experience with 3Dsmax.

What I want to know is that if I only have a student version provided by my college, will that cause any problems? My other one is that I'm absolutely awful at texturing, but proficient at 3D modeling, would that be a hindrance or something?

It would be if you were doing

It would be if you were doing unique models. We actually use zbrush to get most of our textures.

How you could help out is with modeling assets that use specific pre-made textures sets, as in buildings, furniture, and such. Ravanna will probably be along shortly to give you some kind of trial assignment. I think most people here use student version software, btw.

That's good to know, thanks.

That's good to know, thanks. I was worried I was going to either end up using Blender or dishing out a load of cash for a 3Dsmax license.
