One more day. Just one more day. I can go one more day. I'm not that weak. I don't need that. I can see it go through their lips, down their throat, the golden nectar. The release from pain. The escape. I don't need that. Just one more day. I'm not who I was. I can't think about the next day, or the day after that. Its too huge, like a mountain right before me. Just one more day. That is what I tell myself each morning. Just one more day, one more step up the mountain. I sat there, in that place, I guess you could call it a diner, whatever they call it in Japan. I could see them drinking. But that's not why I came here. I came here looking for her. She eats here after work. I came here looking for Erika. I came here to see her, and my daughter, my family. I could see her walk through the door, alone. She looked worn, tired. When I called out to her she looked like she wanted to run away. But she came and sat across from me. I'm not sure why she didn't leave, maybe... <"Why are you here?"> I was jolted out of my thoughts, staring at her as she looks away from me. She still looked the same, even now. She sighed and spoke again "I said why are you here"? I blinked, surprised. "Why am I here? Why else would I be here, I came here to see you, and our daughter, Asuka." Erika sighed again and said "Largo, its too late, you can't go back to the way things were". I leaned towards her, "I know that. Do you think I want to go back to way we were then, the way it ended. The way things were was horrible, I was horrible. Look at me. I'm not who I was. I don't think the way I did. I don't talk the way I did. I don't look the way I did. I've been sober for a year now. Look at me Erika, I've changed. Erika, look at me!" For the first time since she arrived she turned her head to face me. "I'm supposed to take your word for it, that you've changed, after all this time?" She sighed again. "You do look better now, your hair combed, clean clothes. You look healthier. But even if it is true, its too late now." "Can't you at least let me see my daughter, at least one last time." "Do you even remember what she looks like?" I slammed my fist against the table. "Of course I remember! As bad as things were, do you think I would forget my own daughter!" She frowned, then hesitantly reached into her pocket. "I have a picture of her". She set it in front of me. My red haired little girl. "She's beautiful". "Yes, she is" she said softly, pulling the picture away. "I want to see her." "I'm not sure that would be a good idea." "Erika-" "Largo, I have to go" she said standing up. "Erika wait!" But she had already left. What's the point. What does it all matter if I can't see her again. <"Waitress"> I said as I stared into the table. <"Yes"> she said stopping as she passed by. <"Get me a beer."> I stared at it as she sat it down in front of me. Golden, sweet, sweet release from pain, to forget. I reached towards it, touched it. I could feel it's coldness. No! I got up, left money on the counter as I walked away from it out the diner. One more day. Just one more day.
