[CODING][QUESTS][WRITING] Jeroen Langhorst

Hello people of the Internet!

ACTUAL RELEVANT INFORMATION

Most relevant pieces of information can be found in the attached .pdf (per protocol). This seems to be the area to discuss or expand up the given information.

For example: in the .pdf I told I could only be "somewhat" active. To be honest, this is not a clear definition at all. For me in particular this was somewhat a difficult question to answer. In two weeks or so I will have handed in the last pieces of work for my courses and will have quite a bit of free time on my hands. Time I am more than willing to spend on this project. After the summer holidays I will be going back to my courses etc, after which I will be able to spend an evening or two (8 hours or so) per week on it. This might change however, since the future is always in flux.

I do not have any hands on experience with the CK or manipulating Skyrim directly (only through console commands) but I do have knowledge modding the game to absurd levels and not have it crash all the time. Not sure how relevant that is to the project but I thought to just add it.

In my work I generally like to think before I code anything. Write down some pseudo-code first or come up with something in my head before actually battling the problem with my keyboard and compiler/interpreter. Additionally I am quite a big fan of comments. As soon as a project is larger than a file or two I like to document things neatly because I know myself and know that when I look at something later on it will help to have a small human-readable line regarding the current piece of code.

This caries over to my commits and tracking of tasks. I wonder what kind of version control you use, as I am only familiar with Git but this should now prove to be a major hindrance if something else is used here. In conjunction with version control I also work with Trello, a tool I find most useful for keeping track of the tasks that need to be done for a project.

Regarding writing I do not have much to add besides what is already in the .pdf but that is understandable since I do not have anything to show for it other than perhaps some references from players. :P

I would like to work on this project for several reasons.

First of all, I like the Elder Scrolls. This is a bit of an obvious one so I'll just make this part short. Being able to work one something that is close to my hart is, like most people on this project, the prime motivator for wanting to partake in this project.

Second, having worked on some projects (a site here or there, some water drainage simulations, random projects because I was bored) but none as large as this makes this a great opportunity to get to work on something truly large. Not only do I believe it will put my coding skills to the test, but my team working skills as well. I am quite excited to see how a project of this size functions and learn from the experience.

That brings me to my third point. I would like to learn from this project. Not just being part of a large organization/crew but also things that will aid me later on in my future work. Coding tricks and tips are always helpful and welcome. Despite having experience with an array of coding languages (C, Java, JavaScript, Python, Haskell) I've found that there is always someone who knows something that could help you become a better programmer. Be that a new trick specific to a language or just common sense (which gets shoved out of the way every now and then when going into full programmer mode and possibly over engineering things).

Lastly, lore-wise I have a vault of knowledge stored in my head regarding Elder Scrolls knowledge. Now am I no Lore Master of any stretch of the imagination, but I would love to use this knowledge to add to a mythos I've grown to love and care for over the years.

NOT NECESSARILY RELEVANT

My name, as you can guess from the title, is Jeroen Langhorst. I am a Dutch 21 y/o guy with a passion for gaming, Star Wars and KitKat (a specific kind of chocolate bar).

Favorite Game:

Really? Uh... I honestly do not know what my favorite game would be. There are games I come back to over and over but if I had to choose it would be a game from the Uncharted series (I am not picking an Elder Scrolls game because that would be to obvious :P ). I love the exploration and mystery in those games.

Favorite Bethesda Game:

Skyrim. Definitely Skyrim. No matter what other games I play I always go back to Skyrim. I mod it all the way to Oblivion and continue for another 100+ hours of just pure joy. Whenever I load up this game it makes me feel as if I have come home. That is a difficult thing to accomplish and you must be doing something right in my book.

Favorite Food:

My mom's Lasagna. It almost beats my own pasta carbonara and as soon as I smell it I get hungry enough to eat a whole plate of it.

Favorite Music:

I am kind of eclectic regarding my choice of music so I'd say just about anything that isn't too outlandish. But for the sake of having to make a choice, it has to be either The Greatest Show on Earth by Nightwish or Music by John Miles.

Favorite Movie:

Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. I remember going to the cinema on opening night and by the Nine it was amazing. When the opening crawl started the entire room exploded in a shout of joy and the feeling persisted the entire showing. (Yes purists I know the original trilogy is probably better and that episode V is considered to be the best but this one is the one I consciously been alive for to watch in the cinema and thus suffers from my version of nostalgia).

Favorite Book:

Redacted by Redacted

(1984 by George Orwell - never in all my life will a book scar and haunt me like this book. For a book that is not considered horror the merely thinking about it and the possibility of it truly coming to pass scares the living daylight out of me...)

Favorite Piece of Trivia:

Did you know I hate trivia?

Favorite Favorite:

Yeah let's not get meta...

Thanks for taking the time to read through all of this. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute in someway!

Hello,

Hello,

for coding: you should get familiar with Creation Kit and the papyrus language. There are good tutorials for both. If you feel like you can handle these tools, come back to me or MaxNoSense.

From what I've seen from the language it shouldn't be a problem. But, installing the CK now and reading the references. Thanks for the pointer!

Okay, start experimenting

Okay, start experimenting with the CK and do the tutorials. If you think you get the hang of papyrus scripting here's some more advanced material.

Any recommended editor for Papyrus? I saw Sublime showing up in the pdf which I'm familiar with but are there others you feel are more helpful?

Notepad++ is fine, but i highly recommend Sublime Text. Both have support to behave like an IDE.
