Skyrim reviews are out

Submitted by thermador on

Most reviews out today are of the XBOX 360 version, but here are a few for the PC version...

Sounds like the typical Bethesda RPG - buggy but good.

9.0

Presentation
An elegant menu system and a huge amount of story content to dig into. Bugs and stability issues do exist, however.

9.5Graphics
Stunning environmental detail make exploring Skyrim all the more rewarding. Some character models and animations look unnatural.
10Sound
An incredible soundtrack and great sound design help make Skyrim feel like a real place.
9.5Gameplay
Though the up-close weapon combat is still awkward, customizing your character and conquering all Skyrim's challenges is consistently satisfying.
10Lasting Appeal
A game of staggering size and filled with content

9.5/10 Overall

Pros:

Incredible amount of content; world feels alive; more than enough improvements to the Bethesda RPG formula; engaging quests; great new leveling and combat system; did we mention the content?

Cons:

Interface is gamepad friendly; does little to take advantage of the PC platform besides the improved visuals; companions are still dumb as a bag of rocks.

5/5 stars

Verdict: A vast and gorgeous world of exciting possibilities, fascinating places, engrossing adventures and flying lizards.

The good:

  • Immense world stuffed with varied tasks to perform
  • Dragon battles are a blast
  • Lovely art design capped by some beautiful, atmospheric touches
  • Enjoyable battles that you can approach in a variety of ways
  • Lots of compelling, self-contained stories to experience in addition to the main one.

The bad:

  • Glitches and bugs frequently disrupt the immersion
  • Friendly AI is often more of a hindrance than a help.

Sounds like it won't go very far in the PC world ..

After playing the game a bit myself, I can say that those reviews are pretty much spot on. Modders are chomping at the bit to make a user interface overhaul, just like in the early days of oblivion. Hopefully we'll have something soon. Skyrim isn't as revolutionary as people say, however. As someone who played morrowind, oblivion, fallout 3, and fallout: new vegas, it seems like skyrim is more of an evolution than a revolution. One reviewer said skyrim comes close to, if not surpasses, Morrowind as Bethesda's best RPG to date. So far, that is my conclusion as well, but only time will tell to be sure.

Actually, no matter what, I have to say that Morrowind will always be the best Elder Scrolls game. Ever. But that doesn't mean that I won't give the newer games a chance. But honestly, because Morrowind has a lot of things which are missing in later games - the list is endless. I liked attributes, spears and levitation. How can I mod in potions of Fortify Strength and Drain Personality without attributes? Also Morrowind is huge and Cyrodiil and Skyrim are tiny compared to Morrowind - at least in terms of map size. Yes, skyrim obviously has a lot of assets to work with unlike oblivion where I am planning to ask permission from Silgrad Tower and other projects to see if I could use at least some of their assets. How likely will they say yes if the specific assets are made by RazorWing and ImperialDragon... Morrowind will always be the best TES game ever but oblivion is really good and I'm sure skyrim is good too.
