[REL] Random Alternative Start

This is just a mod I made for personal use, but maybe someone else will like it, so I thought I'd upload it.

What it does:

  • New game in Morroblivion starts in a random tavern instead of prison ship.
  • You pick race, class and birthsign immediately.
  • Main Quest is not started.

I don't really plan to add anything else, so the mod is provided "as is", so to speak.

Sorry for my noobish question

Sorry for my noobish question but is it possible to start Morroblivion MainQuest and Oblivion MainQuest if you use this mod? If so, how?

If your question is how to start the Morrowind/Oblivion MainQuests with new characters, just de-activate the mod.  If your question is how to start the MainQuests using a character you created with this mod, it may be a little complicated. 

For Oblivion, if you have the "Morrowind_ob - Chargen and Transport Mod.esp" installed, then these instructions should still work. 

For Morrowind, (someone correct me if I'm wrong) you will need to resort to console commands... I assume you don't mind skipping some initial steps since you're using the alternative start mod, so the easiest way to insert yourself into the Morrowind mainquest line would be these commands:

startquest fbmwMQ01

setstage fbmwMQ01 1

addtopic fbmwMQ01BladesYes

Then talk to Caius and select "Yes" followed by "Orders".

Thanks for the answer. I haven't started the game yet. Currently I'm just trying to figure out if there are any good alternative starting mods out there. Does anyone know if any starting mod exists that does this:

1: it allows me to start in an alternative starting position, preferably in Oblivion world space but if I have to start in Morroblivion world space then that is fine as well.

2: it delays the start of both Oblivion's and Morroblivion's main quests and they are not started until I do the right action (like talking to the right NPC, looting the right body etc).

I think the easiest way for you to get both points is just to use one of the Oblivion Alternate Start/Mainquest Delay mods combined with the "Morroblivion - Chargen and Transport" mod.  Then set your mwMainMenu.AltStart to 0 in the "\Oblivion\Data\ini\Morroblivion.ini". 

With the Chargen and Transport mod installed, paying Kisimba in the Imperial Prison Courtyard to take you to Morrowind will start the Morrowind mainquest (if it's not already started).  If you combine this with another world transport mod like "Morroblivion in Tamriel" then you can travel to Morrowind without starting the Morrowind mainquest as long as you don't use Kisimba.

In other words, the "Random Alternative Start" mod on this thread is probably not what you are looking for.

I tried exactly this with my two favorite starting mods Alternative Beginnings and PrinceShroob Main Quest Delayer. Everything worked as it should except one thing: when talking to Socucius Ergalla  (after I have paid Kisimba for a trip to Morrowind and after I have left the ship and entered the Census and Excise Office) I am forced to pick class a second time (which is of course wrong) and after that the game crashes.

If I just use "Morroblivion - Chargen and Transport" without any of the other starting mods I am not forced to pick class a second time when talking to Socucius Ergalla and everything works.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Most likely, this is an

Most likely, this is an incompatibility with the main Morroblivion mod itself and not with the "Chargen and Transport" component.  The morroblivion mainquest scripts make some modifications to the oblivion mainquest stages -- which are probably causing the crash when combined with those two oblivion mods. 

Where exactly is the crash happening?  Is it immediately after talking to Socucius Ergalla and picking a class? or picking a birth sign?  Or is it after talking to Sellus Gravius about your duties?  If the crash happens after talking about duties, then my next version of "BetterChargen" might fix it.

Also, what is your mod load order and are you using a Bashed Patch?  All these mods make modifications to the same Charactergen quest/script and the last one to load will over-ride all others.

EDIT: I've attached the part of my next BetterChargen which might fix your issue, put it at the end of your mod load order.  Let me know if it works.

Yes, it is immediately after picking a class.

It isn't possible to talk to Sellus Gravius about my duties until I have first talked to Socucius Ergalla which causes a crash, so I don't know if talking to Sellus Gravius causes any problems as well.

I tried your ESP but since it wasn't possible to talk to Sellus Gravius it didn't make a difference.

Another small problem is that when you exit the building you get the question if you want to change your race, class and birthsign. Ideally you shouldn't be asked this in the middle of a game but since this didn't cause a crash it's easy to just answer no and ignore it.

I placed alternative beginnings below all the morroblivion mods in the load order. If I place it above them I will start in the tutorial dungeon instead of where I am supposed to start in alternative beginnings.

No, I didn't use a bashed patch when just testing but otherwise I do.

It's an incompatibility

It's an incompatibility between how Morroblivion detects an existing character and how alternative start mods work.

Try the attached esp. I didn't have time to test it properly, but it should work (hopefully).

Tried it on both Alternative Beginnings and PrinceShroob Main Quest Delayer and yep, it works now (except the popup I mentioned above when you exit the building but that is only a minor thing). Thanks!
