Hi there,
I'd been following the progress of Morroblivion for a while now, since Morrowind was my introduction to TES and one of my favourite games. I'd tried playing the original again (to keep me going until Skyrim!) but certain integral mechanics were just too dated for my liking (although for some reason I'm fine with Ultima VII...)
So it was much to my delight to find that Morroblivion was finally in a pretty playable beta state (this was at v0.54) so I decided to give it a go. Once I'd got through the installation process (not too bad for a seasoned mod-user) I delved in, wondering which of the two games it would feel more like.
I soon had my answer, as I set off from Balmora to Caldera, along the main road. A short journey later, I was running full pelt towards those familiar, turreted gates, hoping the alit wouldn't catch me before the Caldera guards joined in and saved my @ss! Suitably rescued, I stood and looked around and it struck me - this is exactly what happened a decade or so ago when I first set off exploring in Morrowind!
Next I went into a shop and found a rather cheap Amulet of Almsivi Intervention. 'No way!' I thought. 'For that price, it'll never work...' Or at least until I found myself stood back outside Balmora temple!
What I'm trying to say is that Morroblivion plays just how I remember Morrowind playing back when I was a student. That is to say, the Morroblivion guys have successfully created the perfect nostalgic gaming experience. Often when you go back to one of your classics, you find it's faults jarring or that somehow your memories are just better than the reality. But Morroblivion is nostalgia - I don't need my memory to paper over the cracks!
I work away from home during the week now and can't cart my desktop around the country, so I'm usually pining for it by Friday. Morroblivion has me hooked and daydreaming more than anything I've played in the last two years except Skyrim, which is a marvelous achievement for a community project.
So I'd just like to say a massive 'THANK YOU!' to everyone who has been involved in the project - I know you haven't spent 4 years working on this for material gain, so hopefully this kind of post is what you are in it for!
As a final subscript, I'd also like to heartily recommend the Ultima 5: Lazarus project and the Ultima 6 Project - another two labours of love. I only came into that series at U7, but I had a blast with those two games!
