Marrage option?

Submitted by ckstxjimmy on

I have not been involved in this project at all.(Skywind) I have been following it very often and I wanted to finally start working on it and giving my input.

with that said here it is...

I know Morrowind never had marriage or "Amulet of Mara" but I have been thinking about this for a while and what if there was a way we could use an NPC at  or outside of "The Tribunal Temple" that could give you an Amulet that would let you marry much the same way you do in Skyrim? (I have been starting work on designing such an item I was thinking of this name "Amulet of the lasting bond")  but I am not sure if we are going to be adding content in, if we are not I was thinking then that we just make the "Amulet of Unity" act as such an item on top of its long list of stats?

we are giving Morrowind a breath of fresh air with this mod and this is only a very small change that wont effect the very feel of Morrowind we know and love in fact its one of my favorite parts of Skyrim and I ALWAYS had marriage mod when playing Morrowind...so why not implement a marriage system like that of Skyrim?

or we can just import the "Amulet of Mara" if that would work better.

I doubt it. It would probably have to be a mod.

That's actually a rather simple addition that would be great to implement in Skywind in my opinion. This is already in Skyrim so by default I don't see why the feature shouldn't at least exist in Morrowind. Have my upvotes, you.

it's great for roleplaying, so why not. I like it. just have to figure out which npc's you can marry.

And please don't make the argument that it shouldn't be implemented in skywind because it wasn't in Morrowind, because Skywind is Morrowind if it was made now. And if Bethesda would have made Morrowind now, they would have implemented this feature.

I'm perfectly ok with it if it's going to be an add-on btw. (that are a lot of add-ons I will have to download)

sorry by mistake x2 posted.

but how do you think it should be implemented? a new model of an Amulet? or using an Amulet already in Morrowind like "Amulet of Unity" or should we just import the "Amulet of Mara" but that might mess up some of the lore and I would rather keep it as lore friendly as we can because we don't want to take away from the original Morrowind feel,

this is something that a lot of people can take it or leave it you know? its not like you HAVE to get married its just something that feels more real in TES because just like in real life you fall in love with someone and you want to have that person be with you. that why I always liked having a marriage mod and its a feature that is not game breaking. it wont have any effect what so ever besides that little extra income your spouse will provide.

(I would like to see the function added to take over a house of your spouse/have them move into the few houses in the Morrowind DLC you get, but right now that is just rather a pipe dream. this is really a pipe dream but kids also?)

and yes I need to compile a list of the men and women in morrowind that should be added as marriageable.

Nah.  Not as an official thing.  Who wants to marry a flat character?  A husband or wife without full voice acting and a unique personality is just lame.  LAME.  Stupid, even.  And even marrying a character without first getting to know them in any way is equally loathsome to me.  Nope.

I think this could make for an excellent mod, though.  I would certainly encourage someone to make a mod that adds truly in-depth companions with the option for marriage available, sure.  New characters with depth, and new quests and interactions.  Characters you care about, and who you feel could care about yours.  I wouldn't mind being a part of that.  But none of this Skyrim/Fable nonsense.  I'd rather not have it at all than have it half-assed.

thanks so much for your input that does make a good point. but a lot of people from playing Morrowind since it first came out and having a morrowind marriage mod installed for a while have already found out that its not very hard to marry someone in any of TES game as a lot of people who are on the official marriage list for skyrim don't have much about them said for example I married Ysolda in skyrim..turns out she is a drug dealer and tried to kill her partener and was married before but I cant say anything about that to her? the truth of the matter is that skyrims official marriage is a rather standard thing with only a few custom voice lines that are added "hello love" "goodbye my love" and the "ok where do you want to move?" I guess I do see your point how this can be also just be made a stand alone mod.

It should be made stand alone because im finding not really finding much on traditional Dummer marriage. [External image]

While I agree that this could be a cool feature to add, I do think that the marriage, including the ceremony, rites of passage and even courting would have to be done in a way that fits in with native Dunmer culture, seeing as the majority of characters in Morrowind are native-born, and this would require extra dialogue.

I would be very interested in traditional Morrowind marriage though, and would have no problem if it was fan-created as long as it fit in with the lore and feel. Maybe take inspiration from the traditions surrounding Dunmer death-rites,  and the ceremonies of the Houses?

I imagine a great deal of the marriages in Vvardenfell would be political, meant to bring greater wealth and power to your House.

The marriage ceremony (a great topic on 14th Feb! [External image]) doesn't really have to stick too strictly to Dunmer tradiction (of which we know very little anyway). Who said the player character must be a Dunmer him/herself? And the other part too? This could as well be a marriage between a Nord and an Argonian that does happen in Morrowind. (why not in one of Imperial chapels following the imps rite?)

That said I think we don't have to worry too much about following the Dunmer traditions here and always assume this marriage is somewhat different and unique. While at the same time it would be absolutely amazing if the ceremony could be held in a typical Dunmer surroundings and following some of their rites (which makes for a perfect side quest in the game).

Happy Valentine's everyone! Go hug that special someone RIGHT NOW! [External image]

yeah I would hug/do other stuff with  my wife but shes over seas or inside of Morrowind+Oblivion+skyrim :P

but yes I will compile a list of all the NPC that should be marriageable and also put a check mark beside those that will most likely request to follow in the Dunmer tradition.

would be cool if the women/man would ask you if you wanted it to be a traditional wedding or just whatever?

This was all I could find: "A member brought into the House through marriage binds himself through ritual and oath into the clan, and gains communication and benefits from the clan's ancestors; however, his access to the ancestors is less than his offspring, and he retains some access to the ancestors of his own bloodline."

Sounds like the man moves to become part of his wife's clan and takes her name, rather than the other way around, then.  Pledging an oath to her clan and giving up access to all but perhaps immediate ancestors, but now gaining full access to his wife's ancestors.

It would make sense that in a universe where children take on phenotypic characteristics of the mother most predominantly, women would have considerably more 'say' in household matters.

[External image]u knowe marrige would be nice if also a skywind haertfire dlc would be made and than also childeren in skywind  in a nice mod marriege alone would not be compleet whit your own house and kids (could do whit out the kids)

I'm a huge supporter of the different marriage ceremonies. for example you can go to a Dunmer temple (maybe a specific dunmer marriage temple) and ask if you can hold a  traditional Dunmer marriage ceremony there, or you could go to a Imperial Chapel (maybe a specific one, like the Chapel of Mara) and ask if you could hold an Imperial wedding ceremony. It could even be taken as far that Khajits and Argonians can't marry in the Dunmer temple because of Racism, But that might take it a bit to far.

You can also buy an amulet (of Mara)/rings (of Mara)/whatever dunmers use at these Temples/chapels to propose to your beloved.

I do agree that spouses have to be more fleshed out than they are in Skyrim, so they aren't only something to get gold out of (although it is still great for roleplaying).

Since there isn't much known about a Dunmer marriage we can make one up ourselves. The Imperial marriage is probably like a normal standard (western?) marriage

I think this could be an awesome mod

And the mod grows more and more complex...Okay there are two options here it can ether be a half ass mod with no voiced dialog with just the skyrim marriage system or it can be a unique marriage system with unique dialog. Now I don't really support the first option, but the problem with the latter is you guys will need to find someone to organize and also implement the mod. Now if the mod is implemented it'll be really cool but just try to temper your excitement.

I would like to have the standard Skyrim marriage system be built inside of Skywind...that way it could at least have all the codes and a list of marriageable NPC's that could be built into a better stand alone downloaded and refined mod after.

I always pictured Dunmer weddings to have to do with a giant tree that they pluck a flower off of it and give it to one another in place of rings and the tree would be alive so it could act as some priest figure and would be able to tell if your intentions are true, the flower would form a ring and be alive so it would be rather impossible to remove it (like some magic ass ancient tree). but hey that's just what I always thought it would be like since they don't really have much temples besides "The Tribunal Temple"

Karma: -1 (1 votes)

Think you're confusing Dunmer with Bosmer?  But even then, with the green pact in place they wouldn't be plucking any flowers.  A marriage in Dunmer society would be a solemn event, like the rest of Dunmer society.  There would be a lot of ritual involved, whether you're talking Great House culture or Ashlander culture.

With the release of CoDA, we have been given a glimpse of marriage tradition in Dunmer culture:  if marriage occurs between members of different castes, there must be a suitable offering on the part of the male to show he may fit in the new caste of his spouse.  A farmer marrying a woman from a warrior caste might have to prove himself a capable warrior.  A salt miner marrying a goddess might have to defeat a Numidium - you know how it goes.

But Shushine is correct, the ritual is but a small portion of what this should be.  If you are serious about a marriage mod, it needs to be well organized and done 'right'.

Karma: -1 (1 votes)

oh yeah ok I did mix the two up and I totally forgot about the green pact. -_-' I guess in anyway the tree could ask you two questions and then the flower could fall off the magic tree and they pick up the flowers and give it to each other? :D that would still fit with the green pact. because you would not be plucking the flower it would do it of its own will if you are worthy to get married.

and I do see where this is going to make it a non standard marriage . it needs to basically be made into a quest whoever you are going to marry depending on what type type of race you two are/what kind of wealth you have.

I can write you guys a Dunmer sermon of marriage if you would like. :)

that would be pretty fucking sweet if you want to take a crack at it.

I would much rather have it in a different way. It would be much better if instead of some silly amulet we would have NPC's that you can ACTUALLY get in a relationship with, like in any good RPG. The way marriage was handled in Skyrim was neither fun nor immersive. If you want elements for roleplay, they should enhance immersion, not break it by being so artificial.

What we COULD do is add new dialogues and questlines to different NPC's that could eventually lead to relationship and marriage. Those NPC's would have to be fleshed out characters, not a slave that we keep in our basement for cooking and giving us gold from time to time.

The amulet/rings will only be for asking a npc to marry you, but this can only when you are in a serious relationship with this npc.

I still would like to see an separate ceremony for players who want an non-dunmer marriage. I don't see the imperial settlers having traditional dunmer marriages.

I just hope someone can make these ideas an reality.

[External image]thats if u got basement and if u mary the richt persoon it would also be the guard and housemate that ceeps my stuf claen and protectect

but serious marrige systeem isnt that somting u wanne make after the housing systeem is working  and after marrige u got the kids systeem

also we are already voicing everything so howe much work would it be to ad a few lines  for that assuming there a few lovly ladys ho wanne voise it

This would have to be a plugin to appease all players. There are different types of people and marriage means different things to them. To add it as a vital function of the game is ridiculous, it would be subjective to each person's whims on what the marriage should be. I can see this going down a political path with people deciding they take issue with the way it was handled. Leave it as an optional plugin, if that. Keep in mind, there was no marriage in Morrowind. Even in Skyrim marriage was defined a certain way. Just don't set yourself up next to a powderkeg if you can help it. The goal is with good intentions. The practicality of it, that's a separate issue.

Maybe marrying into an Ashlander tribe could be used as an alternate for doing the ashlander nerevarine quest?

GendunDrup

we don't want it to disrupt the original feel of Morrowind. a lot of people might not be interested in getting married at all,so I don't think we want to tie marriage into any of the existing quests.

Regarding Ashlander marriages: since they don't follow the Temple, would they have their own customs and rituals? I imagine the hymn Wondrous Love could be sung at the ceremony.

In case this wasn't complicated enough already... :P

If you guys have any suggestion of this sorta stuff please fill free to post on the game mechanics thread.

cant we just link it in that thread and keep this one open? I understand where you are coming from

I know it may sound strange but what about a mod for Skywind where a shipwrecked boat with some Mara pilgrims on it can be found washed up on one of Morrowinds shores and one of them gives you an amulet of Mara and you can get married on part of the ship that wasn't destroyed where they prayed.

We want the suggestions that are put on this thread into the game mechanics thread so we don't have to go through a tone of different threads to get peoples ideas. It just makes it easier for us.

Theres allot better chance of your idea being put ingame if you put them on the game mechanics thread as well.

I think it is a really good idea, why not? Morrowind might not have it, yet it enhances the roleplaying experience.
As for the Amulet, it is better to keep it lore friendly.
