3D model question

Submitted by JDJay on

I've been looking at attempting to model some of the unique weapons (assuming the 'Skywind Weapons' Google Doc is up to date). My question is: Are the 3D models only one object/shape? Like do you use the very first shape you put into 3dsmax (i.e. just a single cylinder shape and you just extrude the rest of the model off of that)?

I have a few models I'm quite proud of but most of them have multiple shapes in them, sometimes a bunch. I really want to help with what I can and just wanted to know the answer to this as the internet gave nothing of use.

Thanks,

JDJay

As far as I know you should be able to use multiple shapes, but you need to attach them to eachother.. I just did Blender and have no idea of 3DSMax, but there it is possible, if you simply join them.

Multiple shapes are no problem

Hi-Poly models should always be constructed as if you were making it in real life. So separate out the parts that would actually be separate materials.

Once that is done, we can  use a process to transfer the High-poly details to a lower poly mesh for in-game.

Also don't be afraid to post up pictures of what you are working on too - Get some feedback from the community here. Part of a good design process is iteration :)

Alright, thanks guys. I'll get to working as soon as possible.
