Classic Mode without Quest Compass

Submitted by FlamingMask on

A "Classic Mode" without the Quest Compass, or an option to toggle this in the menu is the idea. The value of exploration is something people often mention about Morrowind, and some point to the lack of a quest compass pointing you to each next stop in a quest (as well as fast travel) when talking about what really encouraged random encounters with the dungeons and unique items across the landscape.

Also, I don't know if achievements will be a thing (or recall if they were in Skyrim) but a little emblem for completing Classic Mode would be cool as well.

TL; DR An option to remove the Quest Compass and/or Fast Travel to improve experience

[External image] that was the plan from the start to make it optional  quest markers and fast travel as far i knowe

I thought quest markers were already toggleable already in Skyrim without mods, though I admit I haven't checked?  As far as stopping fast travel, why bother?  Why not just not use fast travel?  I can only speak for myself, but I don't feel any incentive to use either carriage based or map based fast travel in Skyrim.  If the developers want to go to the extra work to prohibit fast travel fine, that is their choice.  I'm just saying why bother?

I'd prefer to have it disabled in the standard version with an optional .esp to re-activate it. Vvardenfell with fast-travel is too small.

Or instead of forcing everyone to reactivate a standard feature of the base game they might want to use, you could just deactivate it for yourself on your own game.  That sounds like a much easier solution to that problem.  I'm sure there are probably already several mods that deactivate fast travel, as well as quest markers and just about anything else you'd want deactivated, and I'm sure most of them would work fine with Skywind and Skyblivion.  What would be the point of making that the default?

The "no fast travel" and "no quest markers" thing can be easily achieved in Skyrim.
How? By simply not using them. Pretty simple if you ask me. Don't use them and you get an immediate Morrowind-like gameplay style.
The only thing I can imagine being changed is the quest logs having more details(if they don't already have them), instead of just "certain character wanted certain thing in certain place that I have no clue where it is", but even then, it's pretty easy to come in here and demand/wish for features when the team is dedicated on other, more important things whilst doing nothing to help make such a feature a reality.

Here's a challenge to all of you, but it will need a bit of preparation.

  • Go print out a Morrowind map. Go do it, I'll wait.
  • Install iHUD
  • Install Less Intrusive HUD II
  • Turn discovered and undiscovered locations, map markers (enemy locations if you're feeling like it) invisible in the mcm
  • Set your "open map" keybind to something further away from your keyboard hand

Now you can play Morrowind (and eventually Skywind) without a map, and its freaking awesome (it really is)

I've tried doing this with Skyrim, didn't work out very well, because you don't get directions telling you where your quest objective is, but there is a mod that should help with that (couldn't get it working myself sadly :( )

Would be nice to have paper-and-ink map, becoming natural view with discovering places on it. But i am not sure that will work.

The Fast travel and map marker features can be avoided entirely, as by this I mean you can still do quests in Skyrim without having them labeled "active". Also with Fast travel not once in the game has it forced you to use it (not even between Skyrim and Solstheim) it is all dependent upon the player (you whom may read this) to have the willpower to resist using these features. Also can't it can be simply turned off in the .ini?

I have played through Morrowind so many times it matters not anymore to use them, (though I agree some journal entries make it annoying to complete certain quests). If you however despise the features (purely added for convenience) then don't use them plain and simple, leave it well enough alone, as many other people on second, third or even forth playthroughs won't care to use them.

Just my opinion but these threads are just as annoying as the Alpha/Beta request ones, as the main developers have agreed it will be optional/customizable.

As much as it would be a cool nostalgic feature it dosen't fit the theme of being ported to Skyrim.  For base game to showoff your own unique way of bringing Vvardenfell to dynamic mapping, then as a later add-on allow the ink/classic style map. As much as the flat map is cool, I have seen the really alpha map of skywind and personally I love it's style.

My own opinions, feel free to offer different views on the matter.

If I recall, when the quests were being made, we had to add this condition to the very beginning of every quest, and the condition was an option to disable quest markers. So yeah, you can disable quest markers.

I believe it should be disabled by default and have to be toggled on in the options menu for both fast travel and compass markers.

In Skyrim there is an option to disable the marker, however if you do, it will be extremely hard and nearly impossible to complete most of the quests. The reason for this is the quests that are given to you are designed with the marker system to help you. Quest NPCs and their descriptions in your log give no real directions, so unless they mark something on your map for you to see, you will have no idea where to go. Fast travel can simply not be used, but with the quests giving so little information to the player it's rather punishing.

If you want to test it, boot up Skyrim and read all of your quests and see how many of them give actual directions to any of the places you need to travel.
