Which Version? Please Reply Your Opinion

Submitted by Annex_Intel on

So this has been a question I've had since I heard about the renewal project. I want anyone who finds this question to please give me your opinion on what you think I should do.

Should I play the renewed version of Morrowind, on the Skyrim engine to get the added experience? Or should I play the original Morrowind?

If it's not much more to ask, please put your reasons why I should play one version or the other, and keep in mind I have never played the original Morrowind. I do understand that at the time of typing this, not many people have played Skywind, but even if you haven't played, I still want to know what you think.

Thank you :D

*Added not, if I do not reply immediately, I apologize, I try to balance my amount of life having. :)

Why not both! :)

Playing the original would provide some basis and knowlege of the world for when Skywind is playable, or you could wait and experience Skywind with fresh eyes! Morrowind is a pretty great game in itself, and Skywind plans to add on to that.

It's an interesting idea to play them both, I do understand that Morrowind is thought to be an incredible game.

Play the original Morrowind first so you can really, truly appreciate Skywind. I feel like if you skip the original, you won't really be able to understand what makes Morrowind stand out so much in The Elder Scrolls series.

I'm also not sure how old you are, but that will make this more complicated for you. If you didn't grow up playing video games in the early 2000's (or at least care much for that era), it will be more difficult for you to "get into" Morrowind. But understand, Morrowind was CUTTING EDGE stuff when it came out, although by today's standards, it may seem archaic and crude. You'll quickly see that it's more complex then Skyrim (such as having 8 core stats that were simplified in Skyrim into only three: Health, Magicka, and Fatigue), leveling up is more complicated because you have to choose the skills that will determine how and when you level up (unlike Skyrim, in which all skills were applicable to advancing your levels), and the combat can be frustrating for those used to Oblivion or Skyrim, especially your first few hours of starting in Morrowind. Expect to swing and miss A LOT!

Overall, the storytelling, lore, world, and factions are more thought out and more "fleshed out" than any other Elder Scrolls game. I mean, there are nearly TEN factions to join in Morrowind (factions included), compared to the, what, five or six in Skyrim? Also, each faction has a dozen or more quests. Granted, they're usually simpler than Skyrim's faction quests, but there are a lot more of them. For that reason alone, I feel that Morrowind is naturally more immersive than either Oblivion or Skyrim (disregarding Daggerfall and Arena, since they used random generation techniques for much of the game).

So play Morrowind. If you have a descent rig, download Morrowind Overhaul, which will greatly increase the graphics of the game. In many ways, using MGE-EX (a graphic and script extender for Morrowind) with shaders and updated textures has such a unique look and feel that I actually favor it to the looks of both Oblivion and Skyrim. Trust me. Here's the site for Morrowind Overhaul: http://www.ornitocopter.net/morrowind-overhaul/.

Once you get that, you have a vanilla version of Morrowind, although the graphics will be improved. If you want to add some mods that ARE NOT lore-breaking or crazy, check out this guide. It's outdated by now, but 95% of the mods you'd want are listed here. Here's the link: http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/

Do that and you'll be in for an amazing experience. I promise you, look past the combat (probably the biggest hurdle to overcome when playing Morrowind coming from Skyrim) and you'll be drawn in. You will be amazed. The mythology is so alien and dense - take the time to actually READ the books and documents that tie into the main quest. The depth is amazing.

Then, when Skywind comes out, play Skywind! It will be nostalgic, but a much more updated and fleshed out version of Morrowind. I promise you, play Morrowind first, and you'll be able to appreciate Skywind SO MUCH MORE.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions about getting your Morrowind set up, or about mods. I could recommend or even send you a few of my favorites if necessary.

Wow. I never thought of it that way. I completely understand what you're saying with the whole nostalgia thing, I was obsessed with videogames ever since I'd say 2003. (Side note, this is kind of off topic) I played Kingdom Hearts as a "youngin" and never understood it, I'm 16 now and completely understand the story. I can definitely agree with the nostalgic part of gaming, and I really appreciate the time you took to open my eyes to this. Thanks!! And I hope to get more reasons for what I should do, but this DEFINITELY will remember what you said when I make up my mind in the next few days/weeks. Also thanks for the mod links, but I'd already knew about the graphics overhaul.
