Crashes at some cells

Submitted by stachnie on

I noticed the game always crashes when I enter some cells. I remember approximate locations of three of them (please forgive me if I mispell some names):

- at the road from Buckmoth fort to the Ghostgate, near Ramimilk Daedric shrine, just after some plants (Trama root, Bitter...something) - v. 0.64

- in the vincinity of Kogoruhn - v. 0.63a

- on the way from Erabenisum (IIRC) Ashlanders Camp to Marbigash, not far from a slave to escort - v. 0.63a.

Is there a way to deal with such crashes apart from frequent saves?

Another issue: I bought a belt, for xx<100 drakes. Restore health (IIRC) 15 pts. Constant effect! For me, this is perhaps the most imbalanced item in the game, because it makes the hero almost invincible. Edit: Hearth Belt, 16 drakes, Restore Health 25 pts.

Try running the TES4LodGen and seeing if that fixes it. I used to crash constantly in Balmora, and running that utility again fixed it completely.

With the belts... yeah, you'll probably just have to resist the temptation to use them. There is a mod on this website that changes those items to use a "Cast When Used" method similar to how it was in Morrowind, which should fix it being so unbalanced. I forget what it's called but I'm sure someone (or the author) can point you to it. :)

Do you use the Universal Cast when Used plugin? It will make all enchantment act like they did in Morrowind. However I agree that the current enchantment might be a little overpowered. What's a better setting? 5 points? 10? The original restored 10 to 40 points of health per cast. Looking at the price one point is probably the best. The plugin below changes it. However when using the UCWUS plugin the belt is now almost useless.

As to the crashes: That's just what happens in a heavily modified Oblivion. Most of the time it's a corrupted spawn point which can occur in regular Oblivion as well. The game will fix itself after 3 to 4 ingame days. You can also always try the Crash Prevention mod. And saving often is absolutely mandatory in Oblivion. If you're forgetful you can always use an automatic saving mod. There are also various guides on increasing game stability such as removing the 2GB RAM cap, like here or here.

Is this a new item added with the latest update? It doesn't have the CWU script attached.

I wouldn't recommend using weOCPS, unless you literally can't play without it. It doesn't actually fixes crashing, but hides it, which could potentially lead to save file corruption over time.

Yes, since it's a belt it was added with the last update. Actually none of the belts have that script attached to it it seems. And btw, because of the script the divine and Almsivi intervention Amulets don't work without UCWUS, for example when you're using Oblivionized Enchants.

weOCPS can actually be useful to debug crashes with the log.

From my experiences not all the prevented crash accumulate bad data into the savegame. You will however have to live with the possibility that every prevented CTD can render your game unusable.

Generally speaking all the issues of GetBaseExtradata and DoPostFixUP are mostly safe to live with.(my current playtrought has more or less 400 hours from 2012 and a number of these issues, and is still stable)

These are obviously data taken from my experience so they may not reflect the truth.

However if the log become much cluttered it means that something is wrong with your installation(bad mods, bad settings).

Some change with the last obse(v21) cause some incompatibilities with mod the use some post obse v20 specific commands. (Like Oblivion XP updated, and Bravil Blood & Mud). So it's not safe to use it always, but only when you cannot get past a certain point of the game.

Corrupted SpawnPoint CTD are not handled by weOCPS.  If regenerating the DistantLod doesn't fix the CTD check the exception code of the crash. If it is 0x00000fd (or similar) it's probably this issues and trying weOCPS probably will not help.

@Billyro, Brainslasher: I applied most of your suggestions (I have a 64-bit OS) and it seems that the situation has improved: crash at location no. 1 does not occur. Up to now I have encountered one crash during a fight, but I may live with that.

Apart from Morroblivion, I have KOTN, SI, some smaller DLC's (Spell Tomes and so on), unofficial patches to Oblivion and SI and nGCD (non Galsiah's Character Development) with a few submods. And a plugin for the Polish version of Oblivion.

Edit: the crash near the slave between Erabenisum and Marbigash still occurs, I have found some other problematic cell near Gnaar Mok. So maybe the situation has improved, but not very much.

There's a cell like that adjacent to Caldera that is crash city.  I'll have to see what TES4 LOD does for it.
