No, we won't.

To expand on this, We have had a large discussion in private chat about this and its just not what we want, Skywind is and will always be a free mod, To try and organize how to divvy up the money would be a logistical nightmare!

On top of what has already been said, it would probably be impossible to monetize anyway due to IP issues (even if we use all new assets, this is still a remake of an existing IP).

Well the thing is according to the FAQ on steam.   It implies that Bethesda is onboard with this.  Which means to me you have indirect permission.  But because of the uniqueness of Skywind there might need to be a special agreement.

But I am glad that you guys are not.  I am having a mini-heart attack of how this/will fundamentally change the community.

We're in a grey area in terms of using intellectual property from more than one game. Bethesda probably will be OK with what we're doing since we're replacing all the meshes/textures and using an installation checker but we're still using aspects such as some of the height map, lore, dialogue content which derives directly from TES III. Main concern here I believe is third party company asset work on TES III which contractually is linked solely to that game. However since it is up to their discretion it would be a very dodgy area to consider. Hence Skywind will remain free.

I'm interested in seeing how Zenimax is going to handle the eventuality of people trying to sell mods outside of steam workshop.  It's BS that Valve takes 75% of the profits from community made content.  I can understand taking a portion since their hosting and providing the infrastructure and logistics but 75% seems like a rather lot.

What you may not realize is that it is most probably actually bullshit in the sense the Bethesda is taking a huge share of that 75%. For all I know about mods, distributing them is only allowed with the consent of the creator of the game, so Valve cannot just start putting price tags on them without an agreement with Bethesda and it is very unlikely for such an agreement to have happened without Bethesda being paid.

I am happy to hear, that skywind will be for free.

Wooow. How to kill a modding community. This is one of the dumbest things I've heard of. Definitely the worst and most hurtful idea Valve had. I'd be ok with very good and very large mods getting some kind of deal but this is just horse armor applied to an astronomical level.

this is just horse armor applied to an astronomical level.

That all depends on the customers. If people are willing to pay for horse armor, it's their fault. If they're not, this thing won't hurt anyone at all and modders will make small asset add-ons free again in the future. I think it's strange making Valve responsible for this.

If team will monetize it, it only adds responsibility, and spoil motivation.
besides, we cant afford Ravanna :P

I think the donation part on Steam for mods should have been optional instead of a forced only option. It would piss off users a lot less, plus I'm sure if you make a great mod, users will be willing to throw a buck or two your way.

This shit might just kill the Nexus, sure the Nexus looks fine now, but now that modders can get paid on Steam, that kinda changes everything.

There would be so many legal issues. Over the years so many different people have worked on the mod that working out who gets paid how much would be impossible. Some guy who added one file years ago could come along and claim money because he worked on the mod.

We can always do exclusive guar armor DLC!!!

someone should make an artwork for that DLC as our official comment on this mess

considering the number of people working here it would be fairly impossible to monetize Skyrim, and as soon as people will start to think how to split "profits" drama will start and everything will go to waste.

monetizing might work only for 1 man / small teams who plan everything for the start.

I appreciate your willingness for this to be a free mod. I, however, would love to donate money for the progression of Skywind. Who would the donations go to, since this is such a massive team of volunteers?

I have to say that I'd be curious to know - once this has all died down a bit - just how many of the people screaming 'a donate button would have been ok, I'll gladly volunteer to pay for good quality mods!' actually ever donate anything. I'm sure there'll be a few donations for the next few weeks, but after that? In fact, I wonder how many donations were made directly to mod authors on the nexus before this blew up, it's not like it wasn't possible to donate before...

Dr.G

There is a donation function on this site located here -> https://tesrenewal.com/forums/announcements/8045 .

That is for funding the site and has nothing to do with the project. 0 of that would go to contributors.

We all go to school or work day jobs, or night jobs, or contract. We won't ever try to because we fear the great c&d from bethesda.

@Squally -> While that is true, the site is the organizational platform that has facilitated the coordination of the project. No site, no mod.

Well, it doesn't seem to be a problem anymore, besides, as people have already said, there's no way to determine who would get what.
