For the corresponding shield to this armor set, I was thinking of something along the lines of Maasai shields, from east Africa.

Front/back/side view.
The edges of the leather are folded over and sewn with large stitches like on this unfinished piece.

The shields are made of leather sewn over a wooden frame, with the handle running the length of the center back. The general design is basic enough to be part of a leather tier armor set, with room for some "Dunmerification", in the form of designs tooled or (more likely) painted onto the leather.
The front of the shield could have plain leather stitched into a shape similar to the above examples, roughly like this:

The seams could be sewn with the same kind of stitch shown on the armor itself - large stitches with flat cord, somewhat uneven.
The handle of the shield would be wooden, wrapped in leather strips for comfort and to protect the wood itself.
There are multiple possibilities for shield shapes, from round and small to larger like the original Morrowind netch tower shield. If this is the direction we want to go with the netch shields, I'll draw up some shield shapes, leather stitch patterns, etc.
Nice research, examples look interesting! Perhaps you can also think about, which type of leather was used for the shield. So which animal gave its life for it.
Maybe a guar skin texture on towershield or a mudcrab shell as buckler will be nice additions. Just as suggestion.
The type of leather's in the name. Netch leather is a thick, spongy leather. Like durable-yet-supple foam rubber.
Here you'll find the other version of the netch leather armor to use as a second reference. https://tesrenewal.com/comment/63113#comment-63113
Nice work so far

A few ideas for the inside of the shield:
Also, you could break the shape like this one
Keep it up!
I like the idea of all leather tribal shield, and the leaf shape. Some nice tribal/paleolitic paintings on them would be really nice too.

Native American shields is a great example too, and probably closer to Dunmer (especially ashlanders) culturally than Africa. Some tribal adornments would be nice to have as well, but I'd replace dangly feathers with some firmly attached tusks/chitin decoration instead, due to physics limitations, and in case of feathers - lack of birds on Vvardenfell :P
Yes please. This is good.
I have some thumbnails with possible shield shapes here, will do more detailed sketches of what y'all think works best. Designs for the fronts of the shields coming up soon as well.
I'd go "c" for regular shield and "a" or "f" for tower shield. The cuts on the sides are not bad for breaking up the shape, but they make me think too much of late Greek shields, which in TES is a shape associated with Aldmer and Ayleids.
If I could choose: "A" and "E" for tower shield. "A" looks intersting for rough processed shield in general and "E" reminds me of the netchs silhouette from above. Could simple be a big part from its back? "C" or "G" for normal shields.

My vote or whatever goes to (C) and (A or E).
Cliff Racer plumes could work if we finally determine what they are and what do they look like :P
Cliff racer plumes: myth or simply legend?
Anyways, I did some concepts on the more leafy shaped shield, though the designs could be adapted to the other popular thumbnail shapes pretty easily.
I was thinking the shield needed wooden supporting ribs on the back, to keep some structural integrity while staying lightweight. Designs A and B are more painted on designs (plus stitching), C and F go for some kind of sewn sort together of look? D is plain (hey, sometimes simpler is better!), and E has some bits sewn onto it decoratively. I was thinking mudcrab or shalk shell pieces for some Local Aesthetic (tm).
I'm leaning toward 'C'. It allows for a nice 'pucker' between the stitching; good for showcasing this as a very thick, almost spongy leather.
these are all lovely :3
My favorites are B and E. They just look most tribal, and I do think that with stiching it's best to go simplistic. I wouldn't mind a small bit of hard netch leather in the middle, protecting the hand holding the shield, maybe some of it on the rims too (but not all around).
It'd be interesting to see these texture designs fit to the best rated shields silhouettes from the previous post. I love B.
E, on the other hand, looks too much like a particular symbol, like a clan, or something. Maybe because the symbol is too precise/geometric, opposed to B's.
A would look lovely with a few more trinkets.
Concerning the side view, I'd go with something less convex/more flat.
C, in my opinion, is quite far from the armour's aspect.
Great work!
I adapted design A to shape E here, and added some of the sewn on elements from another design to liven it up a bit? Give it more character? Something like that. There's also some dangly beadwork, which I'm not sure can actually work in the engine...
Just a tiny suggestion. You could make it asymmetrical, and have it borne like the guards in dragonborn.

I know you already have that imag, Swiper, but just in case someone wants to comment about it.
Yeah an asymmetrical shield could be very cool beans, I did a couple lame shape sketches as well as a less convex side view of the smaller shield with bonus tower shield sideview. Do we want to go with asymmetry or not? Maybe one with and one without? :o
If you want to go with the asymmetric look, I'd have the opening toward the inside, to give more freedom to the weapon-arm and visibility when the shield is in front. Seems some historic asymmetric shields had this, too. http://www.warfare.altervista.org/WRG/Middle_Ages_2-94-95-Hu...
Thanks Sablestone. Sometimes, we do agree. It's reassuring!
The cutout looks better on the inside/upper part, like in your bottom right concept, Swiper.
Maybe try a slightly different shape for the regular shield. Like E here.

Nexos
Some ideas for tower shields? This time, in color :o
I like A and C more. The horizontal bars give a sense of some reinforcement. The others look like they were made in a mold rather than stretched over a frame. A looks more insectoid, which I think is less appropriate for leather -- maybe its the heavy segmentation.
I did some more sketches - these ones look a little more like they fit into the world of Morrowind to me. I hope that's actually the case lol
4,5 and 8 look sweet. I really like 4, as it has this raw look, like it was yanked directly from a netch.
Well done.
Tower shield: 2 for the ornaments, 3 for the shape.
Shield: 8
These all look great - I especially like the wrapped fabric in 6, if some practical reason can be invented for it (religious/tribal decoration [with variations]? used to attach a small secondary weapon to the shield as a backup, or to carry throwing spears [as in attached picture]?).
Overall I prefer 2 for the tower shield (maybe shaped little more like 3, and with the opening on the inside), and probably 6 for the small shield.
I think simple Zulu's shield would be the best one.

Same coloration with moon-and-star can be used as variant.
The moon and star are Nerevar's deal. They're not a 'Dunmer' thing. And this is netch anyway. Make it generic.
Yeah, with Moon and Star painting it'd only fit Urshilaku ashlanders, and these shields are going to be WAAAY more common. I'd look at ashlander tribes symbols, and come up with something similar and more vague/generic. Or even something very simple, like patterns.
okay, more drawings! I'm liking the tower shield, but I'm not as sure about the regular shield.. hmm. Probably need to play with the design more.
i like how this is all coming together, i can't wait for the finished product!
I like both the tower and the regular shield, but they seem to have different design philosophies, if that is the word, and I like the tower one better. I think the asymmetrical cut-away makes more sense on the tower shield, since it is big enough that it might get in the way of your main weapon (assuming that shields are restricted to the player's left hand). I'm not sure it makes as much sense on the regular shield, and the dual cut-aways make the frame much more complicated than seems appropriate for low-level gear -- and at the expense of rigidity. I think the Zulu-themed shape would work best, with stitching reminiscent of the tower shield in your drawing.
You have enough elements to go to the next step. Pick your two favourite designs, and move on to rendering ;)
NEXT STEP MATERIAL :o
I decided that the cutouts on the smaller shield were too complicated for a low tier leather shield, so I decided to go rounder and pattern it after the tower shield, which I have grown affectionate towards. And now they match.
Both look great! A wise decision to keep low-tier stuff relatively simple.

Could probably be fixed by eliminating the triangle decor. Something to consider, thanks.
I think they look great.
This is great! Good work! Will you add some more textures to the leather? Something more "netchy"?
Goodbye triangles, hello runes. Also stitches that match the armor better.
Left is cool. I'd keep the old triangles on the small one. Using different patterns prevents the "same manufacturer" feel.
Otherwise, I'd call those finished ;)
welcome back triangles
so i suppose this is... the final design :o
Perfect. Now do the back!
