Whats the reasoning behind this?

Submitted by dragoncall on

This is a mod for SKYRIM, right? So why is Morrowind forced? Recreation or not it is still a mod for skyrim and by forcing people to have Morrowind you are effectively messing over everyone who:

-Wants to see how Morrowind is on the game they already spend a ton of money on before they buy the official version.
-Anyone who had paid money on the game and has since lost, deleted, etc their copy of a game that is ages old and they stopped playing or was possibly even lost not by choice.
-Anyone who had bought game on console.

Having a legal copy of Skyrim, yea of course that makes sense. But why is this tactic being used that is pretty junk towards plenty of people who probably would have otherwise supported you despite them having completely legal copies of Skyrim, the game being modded in the first place from the ground up. That seems all sorts of unethical. And no this isn't just a complaining post... I legitimately want to know why. Cause it's quite unfair to a ton of people and I want to know the reasoning behind it.

Basically, not forcing you to have Morrowind to have the mod would effectively give you a better and more improved Morrowind for free, which is Illegal. Regardless if its recreated or not. Morrowind is cheap so having to rebuy it shouldn't be an issue. To sum it up, its for legality issues.

You claim that this is unethical, yet you also imply that piracy is okay. You want to see how Morrowind is on the game you already spent money on? That's essentially piracy. Don't talk about unethical behavior while supporting an excuse for piracy.

You do know that Morrowind is available for 20 bucks (and much less when on sale) at various online retailers (including GOG if you consider Steam an invasive DRM), right? Not exactly a bad investment, considering (a) it's a good, classic game that offers a different experience than Skyrim/Skywind, (b) it has many great mods itself, and (c) Open Morrowind while be completed one of these days, making it easier to run the thing on current systems.

(This topic is probably going to be closed anyway, so let's use it to promote Morrowind).

If you have a problem then take it up with Bethesda and then you will find out why you need Morrowind.

"That seems all sorts of unethical."

Just to remind you of the perspectives here: We are making a free mod, we're not making profit from Morrowind sales or Skyrim sales or anything. Of course it is in our interest to have a user-base that is as big as possible and of course we are aware that requiring Morrowind is not in our interest considering that. With all that in mind, I think it is fairly obvious that our reasoning behind this can not really be unethical, we're not just cruel and try to make people suffer.

To sum it up in one sentence: We're requiring people to own Morrowind because we have to.

I (personally) also am under the impression that it's the right thing to do, considering the content we create is (for the most part) re-created Morrowind content anyway, so whoever owns the IP Morrowind should be in on the deal. Of course people who purchased it on console back in the day will have to re-purchase it this way but the same goes for people who purchased Skyrim on console back when it came out, that's technical issues no-one is in control of. It's not a perfect solution, but it's the best deal we as creators and you as players could get.

People will argue anything nowadays... even when it shoots themselves in the foot. I don't understand what part of "Mod" did this person not understand. Morrowind is a great game. people who work on projects like this happen to do it of their free time or to help promote themselves.

"A game they already spent tons of money on"

Are you serious? You spent tons of money on skyrim?

Don't be a cheap ass and pay the price.

"A game they already spent tons of money on"

I laughed because it sounds like people are paying for each mod they play, like the guy already spent 1000 dollars on a modded Skyrim and don't want to spent other 20 dollars on a requirement for another mod he have to pay for. :D

Modding is free, for now at least, so having to buy another Bethesda game in order to legally play a free mod that re-create that game inside Skyrim is not a big problem, it's not a problem at all. 20 dollars at maximum in exchange for not a simple mod, but whole new game as Skywind.
