Do something about the spam.

Submitted by Hashmi1 on
Ok, so we are under heavy spam-bot attack ... and yet someone is cleaning it up on a daily basis ... so I presume there is a mod or admin lurking around. I emailed zach but he didn't reply. Anyways ... vbuliten announced this January that reCaptcha has been cracked and that's the reason their forums are under attack again. They also suggest switching over to question\answer verification to solve the issue: (link) I request the admin to implement that on this forum as well.

I have been deleting the Spam, and I have changed the validation from reCaptcha to text.

Yeah I have been cleaning it up and banning the IPs of the spammers, which has helped a bit. The problem is really that we are on a really old version of Drupal (no longer officially supported) and an out-of-date build of that version at that, which is full of security holes, so verification won't necessarily help anything. I have an email in with Zach because the FTP info he gave me doesn't actually work. Once I get the updated info I will be able to do some sitewide security updates that should fix the problems. In the interim, if you guys want to add spammer IPs to the block list, it's here: http://morroblivion.com/admin/user/rules and then click "add rule", check "deny", check "host" and then paste in the IP address.

Update on this, it seems that some of the spam was coming from people who had trojan/virus infected computers. They had their accounts deleted in the past, which is why you see a lot of posts by "not verified" members (aka deleted members) in threads; e.g. http://morroblivion.com/forums/morroblivion/mods/893 - but they were not spam bots even though they posted spam in other threads. Not much can be done about this except hope that people will keep their virus protection and operating systems updated...
