Lots of CTDs, any help appreciated

Submitted by drchoppy on

Hey guys, just installed Morroblivion and managed to play about 10 hours of it, but having really regular CTDs at least once every half an hour, sometimes every 5-10 mins. This is my load order:

Oblivion.esm
Morrowind_ob.esm
DLCShiveringIsles.esp
Morrowind_ob.esp
Purge Cell Buffers - Cell Change.esp
Purge Cell Buffers - Loading.esp
Morrowind_ob - MorroblivionTreeReplacer.esp
MorroblivionWater.esp
Morrowind_ob - UCWUS.esp
Morrowind_ob - Conversation.esp
MOB_magic.esp
Morrowind_ob - Chargen and Transport Mod.esp
Morrowind_ob - Morroblivion Maps.esp

(Disabled Knights as I read somewhere that this could help). Have installed a 4GB patch, turned graphics settings down, installed Oblivion Stutter Remover and am using the above Purge Cell mods but still having regular crashes, both randomly whilst exploring the wasteland and after loading screens (not as much after loading screens since installing Purge Cell mods). Crashes are happening in a wide area across the world map, not just in one or two cells. My rig is:

Processor: Intel Core i5-6600 CPU 3.30GHz

GPU: AMD R9 390

RAM: 8.0 GB

OS: Windows 10 64-bit

Using Steam version of both Morrowind and Oblivion. Any ideas? Any help appreciated, thanks

I had similar problem. I also installed a few other mod, so I pushed the blame on them, and played the game regardless of the CTDs :)

For me, all appearances indicated that Windows 10 was the issue. I'd previous used Windows 8 and the 4 GB memory patch solved a lot of crash issues. After updating to Windows 10 it no longer seemed to be functioning and the crashes were just due to memory issues. I saw the same crashing every 5-10 minutes happening in existing saves and could not even start a new game without a crash with my 240 mods loaded.

I spent a whole day trying to figure out which mod might be causing the issues only to eventually realize that it didn't matter which mods I had loaded, just the amount of mods loaded. So I believe it was just an issue of the system not properly accessing enough memory. I had tried reinstalling the 4 GB mod patch when I first upgraded to Windows 10, but even after I attempted it again no luck.

Fortunately, I had cloned my hard drive before upgrading to Windows 10 so I was able to test the exact same mod lists and save games back-to-back between Windows 8 and Windows 10. No issues starting a new game in Windows 8 even with every mod active. On the Windows 10 version that was an instant crash. With existing save games, going to the same areas and doing the same things caused crashes only in Windows 10. I then tried other solutions like ENBoost to help with the graphical memory use issues, but this did not help me.

I've tried to research any other known issues with Windows 10 and Oblivion, but was surprised not to find anything. This is just the conclusion I've arrived at, so take my not-so-expert-opinion for what it's worth. But if I'm correct it could be good to know of a Windows 10 compatibility issue before it drives someone else nuts.

I re-installed morroblivion this week, and to my surprise not a single crash after 5 hour gameplay on my win10 machine. My tips:
-Turn off distant land, it will significantly reduce memory usage.
-The 4Gb patcher must be applied on EVERY *.exe and *.dll file. Run a search for these files on your /oblivion folder to make sure, you didn't miss any of them.
-optionally read through the stutter remover's settings, if you play on a toaster, you might find things to improve your game's performance.

Morroblivion runs mostly stable for me, not as stable as Cyrodiil but playable. Some regions are more prone to crashes than others. For me parts of the Bitter Coast as well as Ashlands have crashed more often than others. Some say that this is related to spawn points. Also NPCs that attack me with two-handed magical swords often cause the game to crash repeatedly. Therefore I follow some general rules:

- always save before entering a dungeon
- always save before exiting a dungeon
- save after finding good loot
- save after traveling a longer distance outdoors
- save to different slots to prevent a broken savegame from ruining the whole game (use a rotation of 20+ different slots)

I'm using the Oblivion Reloaded purge cell buffers code which is set to purge every 5 minutes and/or every 5 cell changes. In addition to that I usually purge manually before leaving an interrior cell.

The game still crashes from time to time but since I always have a recent savegame it doesn't hurt me much.

Thanks for the input guys. Yeah I thought it might just be Windows 10 as well, but gyuuula's comment kinda makes me rethink that. I think what gyuuula said about applying the 4gB patch to all exe/dll files is probably what I didn't do - I'll try this and see if it helps. And agreed Bullfrog - thank God it has a Quicksave function!
