What advantages over simply playing a Modded MW game, say with MW Overhaul?

Submitted by Kefka on

I have been considering playing MW again when I am through with FNV. I have been getting stuff for a MW game for a little bit now, when I saw that this project was still running, but as I read through the treads I am wondering whats the point?

I noticed there are no AI scedules so everyone just stands around like always. I assume there is Oblivion style combat, which is nice(though there are MW mods that allow for active blocking and 100% hit). But other than that I don't see why I would use this over playing MW.

Before MW Overhaul graphics would have been a major reason to play this over MW inself. But now with MW Overhaul the graphics are hardly better, in some cases like Distance land and some of the textures they are worse, much worse.

I know of no MW mods that add physics but that is hardly a reason to bother with this, so the question reminds why play this, over MW Overhauled with whatever mods you feel it needs?

You're absolutely right. There is no point whatsoever to anything we've done here.

I am looking for legitimate discussion here, I am not bashing this project I merely want peoples opinions of why they would use this over MW Overhauled w some mods. Pros and cons, etc Not sarcastic/spam replies.

It is a matter of taste. Half or more of the people that play Morroblivion really ought to be playing Morrowind, because that's what they really want. When I asked on the forums for areas that need addressing, I got NONE. Instead, what I got was a litany of ways in which Oblivion is not Morrowind. There are LOTS of discussions and complaints about things not being just like Morrowind. The game is Oblivion, not Morrowind. If you like the idea of playing in Vvardenfell with an Oblivion character, then that's what this is. If you want to play Morrowind, the by far the better option would be to go play Morrowind.

That tells me nothing. I would like to hear from people that can tell me why they choose this route, over simply playing MW Overhauled with mods. When this Project was started there was no MW Overhauled so one of the major reasons I would assume this was made(to have much better graphics than MW) has now become a non issue.

Oblivion is my favorite game, so I am not some hardcore MW rocks, OB sucks guy. Though MW is my 2nd fav game.

The main things that really make OB a better game than MW imho are:

Radiat AI-Which MorroOB does not have

Graphics-With MW Overhauled out now, MorrOB does not look better anymore(some things look better, other worse, so it evens out based on the pics I have seen).

Quest Design-The quests are not enhanced in MorrOB so this is a moot point.

Voice acting-None in MorrOB

Combat-This seems to be the only major improvment I can see, though there are a few mods you can use in MW to get this, though it will still probably be a step down from the true OB combat in MorrOB.

There is also physics but that was quite minor in the scheme of things.

And of course MW is not in Beta like this, plus the 1000's of mods out for MW to customize your game how you see fit.

So for those that play this, what reasons do you play it over just playing MW? Is it the combat and physics? The ability to play with the same character for both games? I would like to know.

Also how the skills work? Does MorrOB have spear, enchant, etc?

People use this because they want to use this, Not for some deeply meaningful reason that you seem to be digging for. If Morrowind is what they prefer then they have every right and reason to play it. But those who enjoy this need no reason to enjoy it other than because they decided they like it. The only question i have is: Why do you keep trying so hard to make the people who work hard on this project feel like their work means absolutely nothing?

Some of the reasons why you might play Morroblivion over Morrowind: * The UI/Conversation system * Combat system * You want your character to be able to travel freely between both locations in one game * Fast Travel I agree that a modded Morrowind will look better than Morroblivion. However, if you are someone that isn't willing to learn how to use MGE, then Morroblivion does give you a major upgrade.

The reasons why I play Morroblivion:

Better Combat

Better Physics

Those are two really big things for me.

Now you think there's a conflict between choosing Morroblivion and Morrowind 2011. Why don't you just do both?

I like:

*Fast travel
*Physics
*Combat system
*spellcasting system
*picking up missfired arrows
*graphics

I am missing:

*entchantment skill
*item pricing
*selling stolen items to anyone but the owner

I am looking forward to:

*visual overhaul
*the right greetings

My reasons:

-Better Physics

-Better combat, especially as an archer

-Compass, map system and fast travel from Oblivion

-It seems like people are forgetting how awful Morrowind's journal system was for keeping track of quests compared to Oblivion's quest log.

Honestly, I've been feeling like this is pretty much the best thing ever since I started playing... I've tried getting back into Morrowind a few times but I really missed the gameplay improvements that Oblivion brought to the table.

How do you do these things:

* You want your character to be able to travel freely between both locations in one game
* Fast Travel

*spellcasting system

Spellcasting especially, because the way I have been doing spells is pressing tab and clicking on a new spell.  I did not like the way MW did this pressing keys to switch a spell selected...

Perhaps at some point I will try this, right now I think going the MW overhauled route is better for me. Thanks to those that gave me there reasons. It brought up things I had not considered.

@Thermalse

It looks like people do have reasons for choosing this, makes sense people do stuff for a reason. I don't understand your hostility.

And to answer your question, I am not trying to do anything of the sort, I am trying to make an educated choice about something that could take up many hours of my life in the near future.

Don't take it as Hostile. It wasn't meant to be. And anyway you missed the point, The point was that people do things for their reasons. Not that no one has any reason at all.

I don't have a reason really, I wanted something to do for the rest of my spring break but can you answer my questions please?

Ok, I miss that. But you must have missed the fact that I said I wanted other peoples reasons, I gave my own(based on my limited knowledge of the mod) so people could see were I was coming from and perhaps correct any misunderstandings I have.

I thinks the project as a whole is fancinating, just as a neat idea.  Afterall you have people you mod for MW making Cyrodil and Skyrim, again fancinating though I myself would not play something like that. On the overhand I might play something like this.

Also,Anything like this I imagen is self rewarding for the makers. So there is personal vaule in just that(a lot) regardless of if I think or anyone else thinks its really 'needed'.

The fact that you are willing to explain and aren't going into a troll rage makes me believe that you aren't here just to antagonize people. Sorry if I come across hostile sometimes. I just dislike people who go out of their way to ruin peoples ideas, And you came across as one in those first few posts.

Dude Kefka, you're over-analyzing this. If you really can't choose between the two, get both installed and try them out.

How do I

* travel freely between both locations in one game
* Fast Travel

*spellcasting system

This happens quite often to me, I try to be polite and explain but I still often get negative respones when I make post like these. But thanks for understanding, most just bash me and then leave the conversation as soon as they relize I am not a troll.

As to why I don't just play both, simple, the mod has a fairly complex install invovled. So I don't want to go through the work and this just me let down.

Also why can I not just disable the UAC and keep the OB in my normal folder?

I recommend you read the readme installation instruction or watch the videos:

They say to bite to bullet and avoid the problems by installing to a new directory.

But I actually don't understand the logic behind it and would like to know, but said no way.

Still does not say why disabling UAC won't work.

Theoretically, you can install in C:\Program Files if you are always logged in as an administrator, but 1) this may not be a 100% workaround and 2) being logged in as an admin all the time is a poor security practice.

does this help?

I can't personally answer your question

Well number one reason this project hasn''t got a simple installation is that this is not complete. It is being constantly updated and consider how much time would it take if David created a setup file in every version and updateda 1GB file to internet.

And of course there are the optional files which not everyone don't download.

Can you give me the link to overhauled Morrowind so that I can give you a proper answer?

And of course JOURNAL, JOURNAL AND JOURNAL. After Tribunal it became more easier I agree, but still you can't compare it with Oblivion.

http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1173065-relz-morrowind-overhaul-sounds-graphics/

I am suprise you have not heared of this, is all the rage over at the Offfical forums, its so awesome! It has over 100 graphic and sounds mod combined. It looks amazing when playing.

Ok I ingnored the warnings and I just finsihed testing MorroOB in my NORMAL folder with UAC, I even completed a couple quest during my test, everything works fine. And boy is it odd, the whole mod. So surreal.

Morrowind Overhauled graphics are MUCH better than MorrOB, I was suprised, I thought things would be much closer based on the screens, but when I actully played it, it did not look nearly as good.

Also the lack of MW music and MW voices was a little odd, but perhaps that will be added in another version. Also the lack of MW skills is dissopointing. Oh and of course the interface(even with Darn) is not nearly as good as MW, testing Morrowind Overhauled remined me how good an interface can be, OB with Darn is decent but not as good as MW and the Fallouts even with Darn still suck.

But even with these issues I will still keep my MorrOB install around, OB does have much better combat and a few other features that are nice(physics, etc) perhaps in a future realse the quest compass can be added to MW quest, that would be great, no getting lost looking for stupid landmarks, etc.

I've played Morrowind for years before I was able to play Oblivion properly. In the past I could only play Oblivion via xbox 360 which was fun since no lag but in the end boring once i completed EVERYTHING. Modded Oblivion on PC is WAY Better!

Morrowind is unique, MOST of the game is done manually as in the designers and creators have designed each area and it arent randomly generated. Oblivion does have randomly generated landscape in some areas. I loved Morrowind over Oblivion purely because of the atmosphere, it felt like an RPG if u get what I mean and the story was great too.

Oblivion was good, the graphics and physics and AI was a massive improvement and I wished that for Morrowind and that wish came true, Morroblivion!

Yes there are thousands more mods for Morrowind than Oblivion and still counting and yes Morrowing Overhaul has superb textures in which I am eager to try out soon. So why Morroblivion?

Morroblivion I believe has the potential to go very far and in so many ways improve the game "Morrowind". With AI and physics from Oblivion added into Vvardenfell it brings it to a new level. More and more is being improved and with the anticipation of Eloth's textures it can only get better. And what will happen when EVERYTHING is restored? Well im guessing custom content for this mod could be made :)

I agree it has the potential for sure, thats why I am going to keep in on my hard drive.

MW G & S overhaul is out now, when will this MorrOB overhaul be out? Seem like the desinger had enough done to release it many months ago based on the screens, perhaps there were bug issues.

I would have to play to really see the diff, after all from the screens I thought vanilla MoOB was going to match up with MW OverH. Plue I also use Connarys stuff(did not allow his stuff to be in the overhaul) which are some of the best tex work out there, making MW look even better(and closer to the original feel of the game, esp in Balmora and towns with similar textures).

Oh and I relized I did not install it in C/program but in C/programs86X(which is my default drive) so perhaps thats why things worked out for me.

Hey Darth what did you think about MW overhauled(remember is does sound too)?

I can not lie, this is fascinating; I think it is better than Eloth's but very slightly. I believe it will be a lot better than Morrowind after Eloth's overhaul and AIs are complete.

Huh whats this about AI? And what will be a lot better than Morrowind? Can you explain a bit?

Setting AIs basically mean that NPCs will start to sleep at nights and actually will have scheadules.

I think the main reason is the bodies, and the make your own face feature oblivion has. The clothes are also better in oblivion. If it were possible to use the oblivion bodies, clothes . armor and the face generator in Morrowind that would be the ultimate Morroblivion game to me.

Oblivion Graphics Extender + shademe's soon to be released Dynamic Shadows + Eloth's Visual Overhaul ... I am expecting Morroblivion to look nearly as good if not better than the MW overhaul in the near future.

And then ofcourse there are other bonuses like Physics, combat, magic system, Normal specular and parallax maping, NPC bodies and animations,  and more flexible moding possibilities.

Don't take this personally but your style reeks of advertising and "leave this, play mine".

Whoa, now I was totally unaware of that mod. That sounds sick, I'm going to check that out.

I have nothing to do with the MW overhauled project, I am simply stating my amazment at what it has done, If not for the overhaul I would play MorrOB for sure, assuming I stumbled upon it. As I have been activily checking for MW stuff because the Overhual has gotten me interested in playing MW again.

I download that visual overhaul for MWblivion and things really don't look much better, I mean they do look better but overall things arent changed that much, the other overhaul(the one not out yet) seem to be much more extensive will have to wait and see with that.

What is the shadow enhancer people are talking about? I know there is one for MW, but its not in the overhaul though I guess it will be in the future, it makes all the buildings(and statics) have shadows its quite impressive. But you can use it and some other program at the same time or something, I don't really know but it suppose to be in a future release for MW Overhaul. I wonder how they compare.

Is there a thread about secdules, that would really make me interested in MWblivion as radiant AI was one of the things that most impressed me about Oblivion.

Well, again don't take this personally, but this isn't the place to state your amazement about another mod. And it certainly isn't the place to behave like this on someone elses thread.

Kefka Is there a thread about secdules, that would really make me interested in MWblivion as radiant AI was one of the things that most impressed me about Oblivion.

You do realize that we are not trying to sell this to you or to capture your interest... if you like morroblivion at its face then play it, otherwise if you feel that it is not adequate enough to 'interest you' then by all means feel free to delete it and go back to to Morrowind with the overhaul, I assure you that none of us here would be offended or threatened.

To answer your question, Didact is working on AI but there is no seperate thread for it.

Shademe's working on patching the actual oblivion game code to allow for dynamic shadows on everything (including interiors). Here is proof of concept that came out last year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eKzwKFlz8Y

Hey Hashmi1, I just watched that video from the link you provided. This looks pretty impressive, but I still don't really see the shadows? I mean I see shadows but they're not really defined. I was thinking more like long, dark, defined shadows casted by the crates and barrels, but I don't see this?

Everything in Oblivion can be reproduced in Morrowind with the right mods. Everything in Morrowind is equally reproduceable in Oblivion with the right mods, like Morroblivion. Give up debating on why Morroblivion over Morrowind with mods cause you can't win or lose a debate when you're trying to argue oranges or apples are better. It's down to preference.

Personally I don't think MW Overhaul Project is visually better. Should I start a thread there asking the modder why s/he bothered making that mod instead of buying Oblivion and downloading Morroblivion?

@Daedalos, I never asked why the person made MorrON. I already said there must me a lot of personal reward in making something like this regardless of my opinion of it or any one elses.

And if you were thinking of playing MW overhauled but thought MorrOB was better looking(or even if you did not), then yes I think you should go over there and ask why people choose to play it over MorrOB, it will help you see others point of view and perhaps like me get you to at least test it out(though you would have to be discrete because of MWblivions issues with Beth).

@Hashimi, You may have missed were I said there "there are other reasons to play MorrOB other than graphics." The person seemed pretty distress about the graphics, so I let him know about Morrowind Overhauled. But also let him know there are reasons to play MorrOB other than graphics, If he replies I will give him some reasons.

On the Bethesdas official forums other mods are regularly discussed and why someone would use one over the other. In a MCA thread you will see someone write 'why use this over Starlights npc adder' and vise versa? Unfortunately this mod has been cut off from the official forums, but I still see no reason why discussion of that sort can not contuine here.

It's the best RPG engine ever (Oblivion),

Combined with the best RPG adventure ever (Morrowind).

If Bethesda had any sense they would pay the modders to finish it, and release it as "Morrowind Special Edition", or something.

Thats true with OB you can create the best single player rpg experience out there. Though this won't last for long, as Skyrim is on the horizon.

Kefka, there is a reason for this: you are rude.  I don't know if that's because English is not your first language (as the case of many site members), because you are intentionally being disrespectful, or because you, like many who devote their lives to video games, have underdeveloped social skills.  However, your posts, while not without merit, are consistently phrased in an abrasive and condescending manner.

You attitude will get you banned if you keep it up.  Before you post, remember: if you can't say it nicely, then don't say anything at all.  Also, please read this article thoroughly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudeness
