Name Glitch "I'mpush button 6"

Submitted by Podo on

I just started getting this glitch recently and it won't go away, and I was wondering if anyone knew what might be causing it. I recently reinstalled Morroblivion to start playing it again, but instead of saying their name, every NPC calls themselves or you "Push Button 6" or "Push Button 7" in their dialogue, while the hud still shows their actual name.

That's because of the script. When you load a savegame you should wait a short time for the script to work properly. Also, NPCs need a certain faction so that the name is displayed correctly. There is no fix for this.

Raubkopiesäbel is correct.  Here is more detailed information to help with this and any similar issues in the future (reposted from Discord conversations with Podo on 2020-Jan-23 and 24):

The script which replaces the "Push Button" phrases with actual NPC names can take a several seconds to load after loading up your game, depending on the single-core speed of your CPU, the number of mods you have installed and whether or not your are running from an SSD.  On a mid-ranged computer without any additional mods, this should be working within 12-30 seconds of loading your savegame.  If you wait for 2 minutes after loading a savegame and are still seeing "Push Button" instead of actual NPC names, then you may have a mod installed that is crashing the NPC name replacement script.

The NPC renaming script is done by an OBSE callback function named mwNPCActivateHandler. This is not an actual quest script, so I don't know if there's no easy way to verify that it is actually running from the game console. The OBSE callback needs to be patched into the game every time Oblivion.exe is run, and this is handled via the mwMainMenu quest script. If you start a new game and get the Morroblivion opening cinematic and then start in the Prison Boat, then you can reasonably assume that mwMainMenu is working correctly and has successfully installed the OBSE callback for NPC renaming....

... Once you verify that the OBSE callback is successfully installed by doing the above steps, we can look into potential mod incompatibilities: the OBSE callback function for NPC renaming (mwNPCActivateHandler) will check to make sure an NPC is in the 0factMorrowind faction before performing the replacement of 'Pushbutton.." text. So any mod which modifies factions for Morroblivion NPCs is a potential culprit. Anyone can try to verify this potential breaking point by removing an NPC with potentially affected dialog from the 0factMorrowind. Dynamically adding 0factMorrowind to an NPC via the console should fix this problem for any affected NPC....

This can be tested with the console command:

ModFactionRank FactionID, modValue

Where FactionID is the the FormID for 0factMorrowind: 0122001B and modValue is 1 or greater

You might try removing mob_loyalty_0.esp to see if that fixes it... I think that mod works by modifying faction ranks
