Help with updating textures

Submitted by Josie on

Hi guys.

I'm already participating quite a bit in this project but there was one last thing I wanted to try out. I'd like to call myself a photoshop wizard as I used to create a lot of art with it, etc. So I was thinking I could update a few old Morrowind textures. I experimented around and managed to figure out how it works, what files need to be updated for it to show ingame and how to open them etc... But I was wondering about the texturing itself! I don't have any idea about the possible "restrictions" that should be taken into consideration, like resolution or image sizes or such... Could someone advice me on these? Or just give general guidelines as to how to make textures more HD? :) Thanks a lot!

I'm sorry if there already was a thread for this in particular, but I didn't find one...

Hey,

you should PM Eloth, he's doing a lot of work on textures. ;)

textures always have sizes like 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024, 1024x512 and so on.

You need the nvidia dds plugins and tools for photoshop, you can download from here:

https://developer.nvidia.com/sites/default/files/akamai/tools/files/Photoshop_Plugins_8.55.0109.1800.exe

Now you can load/save textures as .dds which skyrim use.

Textures should not be lower than 512x512, try to keep them over that resolution.

Also make sure that you save textures with the option "save with mipmaps" turned on

There is atleast two or three people updating textures now, but no one is updating all the banner art, they have to be completely redrawn by an artist, so maybe thats a good job for you :)

Hi Eloth! Thanks for responding to this thread directly.

I already have the plugins and tools for photoshop fortunately. :) So I got those things working already but thanks for the other tips. And I would LOVE to work on the banners (You DO mean the ones hanging outside shops etc, right?)! Unfortunately I've lost my wacom intuous pen and I'm not sure I can get a good enough new one just yet... T__T I'll try to search for the lost one a little more, and I'll see what I can do!

i mean all the banners in the game, just do a search inside data\textures\morrowind\ and search for *banner, and everything comes up :)
