Skywind progress

Submitted by Iniquity on

Hello. I want to share with you my views on the development Skywind.   Recently, has been done all good things, especially in the last two months, we can say that gave second birth to our project. This also applies to complete processing the master-file and the restructuring of the files, thanks zilav and happychappy. I would also like to note the huge progress in the changes of models, textures, thanks eloth. Adding weapons, thanks Shadow. Adding quests, thanks Machine and digitalparanoid. Soon the idea should appear armor, thanks alexanderb. Enormous progress.   In the paragraph above, I have only to those who distinguished themselves in recent times, but I remember those who are now either left the project or working on something but I do not know about it. Sorrow, ironman, Ice, Mooncat, Sjors Boomschors, RammS. And of course Mehh, which is always with us :) Without you, this project would not come down to the point, thank you and hope that you will return to us. I apologize if I have forgotten smbd.   All praise, now a little bit and the bad. Perhaps I'll start with the NPC, which hang more than six months in an underdeveloped state. It's something not funny. Only active there - Sammael,  thanks a lot you. Do not you think that he needs help in this endeavor? Let us every day to do at least 5 NPC? We will finish them within a few months. We are beginning to scatter power, forgetting that it is not completed yet. By the way, I still do not understand whether all textures and meshes are available?   Further by the text, the attempt to create Morrowind Overhaul v. Skyrim. Do you really think that we will do that better than Bethesda? Yes, they have little  filled landscape, but it is filled with so perfectly uncluttered, atmospheric. They lived in it, were sketches, arts. You want like incredibly easy to change the world, which is so painstakingly created. Obtain this motley crew as Morrowind Overhaul. I have personally been involved in this project, in order to play Morrowind on the new engine, but I want to play in Morrowind, and not in another game. Think, and what you want to play?   It seems to be everything. As the game will be the armor, there is no working meshes, textures, play with full confidence can already be called Alpha.   Thank you all :) Sry for Eng)

Thanks Inequity for the observations. I'll give my view point of some of the statements.

I guess as far as you mention "scattering power", the thing is that people want to work on what they like first, and also do different things to break it up a bit. Zilav made the same observation that we should be concentrating on the things that are problematic and that should be central to a core release. Now this is probably how it should be done, if we were a software company, and we were getting paid. We would also have a project manager, some specifications, gantt charts for what tasks need to be done in which order, etc, etc. We are none of the above, lol. But from what I've seen in my limited time on the project is that everybody is super efficient and the fact is that everything has to be done at some stage, so order of doing things is not really important. The difference might be that the public get a "more playable" version a couple of months ahead of what we might be currently doing.

No I don't think we are going to do better than Bethesda if they were to re-create Morrowind. But this answers the question would Bethesda release the landscape of Morrowind today with what they have now for the engine, artistic talent and available model resources? The answer is certainly not.

We can't compete with Bethesda, but I don't think that should stop us from trying to create something amazing. We are trying to create something in between. The thing is that if we don't get level designers working on it, then it won't change and we will release it like it is. However if we do, then no harm done in getting those hundreds on man hours to sculpt the landscape, in subtle ways, but with remarkable results. Its more about getting people on board, rather than should we be doing it or not. You will have no-doubt you are playing in Morrowind, its just going to look...well better. It will still be sparse landscapes, it just won't be heightmaps, which lets be honest, come across as unfinished eye-sores.

I will personally create a script which removes all extra objects from our master file, so that the purest can play Morrowind as it was originally. I'll do this so that any new release can have it applied. This might be added to the installer so that people with lower speced machines can play with better FPS. Wow its actually scary that we have coders that can do this sort of thing!!

With the NPCs, its by far the easiest thing for people who know nothing about the project to actually work on. So having anybody working on NPCs, who have knowledge on the project is kind of a waste of valuable time. Of course it needs to be ticking along, but probably better to focus on recruiting people for this.

Hello.  I've just registered and I am excited to have a chance to contribute.  I am a polished, seasoned programmer (read "old") with some modding experience in Oblivion.  I am currently enthralled with Skyrim, but I have not played Morrowind.

That said, I agree with happychappy's observations on the iterative and scattered progress that one sees in virtually all volunteer-driven projects.  It is true that there is little organization and that some tasks will linger in an unfinished state for months.  However, this is the nature of open-source-like projects.  The Bethesda team has the advantage of tools and talent, but their designers and developers are paid for their work.  They may not necessarily have the same passion as the people involved with projects like Skywind.  When the desire to contribute trumps the desire for a paycheck, the work done IMHO is priceless.

If we, the Skywind team, need an example of what can be realistically achieved, then I direct you to a look at the Elsweyr or Nehrim mods for Oblivion.  Elsweyr is beautiful and Nehrim is downright awesome.  There's no reason Skywind should be anything less.

I think that Skywind will come together because the folks doing the conversions, tweaking and scripting are committed in spirit and actively find the time to contribute to the project.

And that's my 2-cents' worth.

I thought Mehh was still an active contributer? Also if I might ask. Does the team seem to be in a healthy state at the moment, or is it kinda wobbly? Just wondering because some of us haven't contributed because of time constraints, but would join in a heartbeat if the team was on lifesupport.

@Gregthegen  I don't know about lifesupport, but I, for one, was almost sleeping in front of the screen because I really wanted to end a task I assigned myself today. But now it's done, time to sleep :P (5 AM)

If only a day had 48 hours, it would be great. I want to be more helpful, but I have free time only at night, like right now. And almost all I can do now, is just sit before notebook with matches in the eyes, trying to keep my head far away from keyboard. :)

Hi Guys.  I recently stumbled across this project on a gaming site and became instantly excited about it.  I spent the last few nights reading the boards and learning about project.  I would like to help.  It sounds like NPCs is where the most help is needed?  I don't have a lot of experience, but like NotMarki,  I'm  willing to read, experiment and learn.  Is Face Gen the best place to start?

Thanks so far for all the energy and effort.  It really looks amazing.

FaceGen is certainly the easiest to get to grips with as a nooby.. you just open up the face, edit it with sliders and save it
