On the subject of game machanics

Submitted by bluesausage on

Ok, I really look forward to this mod, and hope to play the heck out of it. But I've noticed something after reading threw a number of threads. As has been pointed out before by others in this forum, I thought the point was to bring the deep morrowind world/characters into the skyrim game. That being said There are a number of people wanting to completely overhaul the game mechanics.

Now don't get me wrong, your hearts in the right place and i love you for it guys. But we may end up alienating people from experiencing skywind if we gum it up to much with all these gameplay changes.

I was thinking we should offer all those mechanic/gameplay changes as optional mods for skywind. Otherwise keep the gameplay as is, and only changing what HAS to be change to overcome some of the parts where skyrim and morrowind don't mix well. Would be interested in hearing all of your thoughts on this as well.

Hello bluesausage I think we all realize your concern but I don't think you get the whole understanding of why we are doing this mod. This mod isn't just about putting the game game models and textures into skyrim, its about bringing as much of morrowind into the skyrim engine.

I do understand that some people have not played morrowind as a kid but if you did then you would be more understand of our purpose, but we are very passionate about what we are doing here. We want the game to fill and look as much like the original as possible but we also want to make the game fill like it is updated as well.

No we are not looking to make just a skyrim equivalent of morrowind. we want the best of both worlds. Also we have already started that path so why not end it. :)

I actually did play morrowind as a kid. and i still do play it, and love it to death. However, I think skyrim has made some very good changes to the gameplay. chiefly among them, getting rid of the classes (I know this isn't a popular opinion, but it is mine). I love the freedom to just play a character as I feel he should develop out over the course of the game instead of putting up a set of barriers at the beginning only to want to move in a slightly different direction later on.

Now don't get me wrong. I don't approve of all the changes. I don't like how they've gotten rid of the attributes. But with adding stuff like this back in im just worried that it might not mesh as well with the way the game is currently structured. Sense it was blatently designed to not have them, and there are already things in the game to make up for them. (note that im just using the attributes as one example, they're are other game machanics im worried will be a bit messy after they're tampered with)

There are yet other things i think they got halfway right. Like alchemy. I LOVE how you ccan find the ingredient effects by experimenting with them and such. Makes me feel like IM the one discovering the science of alchemy, not some numbered stat telling me i've unlocked them and just magically know them all now. However getting rid of 90% of the alchemy tools and such i don't care for.

Besides all I was saying is that all of the major gameplay changes should be optional instead of mandatory to play skywind. People should be allowed to choose how much they want the gameplay changed. Because as a veteran morrowind player myself (many many many hours. :P) I can honestly say that I really enjoyed skyrim as it was. Even with it's flaws, and i know many other people who are of the same mind.

Now don't get me wrong When the options are there i will overhaul the magic system, and am all for fluffing up the alchemy. As well as bring back the attributes (depending on how well they work). But many other people may not want those gameplay changes. Maybe they just want to enjoy the deep envolving world of morrowind. To me the depth and breathtaking parts of morrowind were NOT it's gameplay, but the WORLD and the people living in it. The story as i wrote it in my mind as I played. The exploration.

and for those people who want skyrim mechanics we made our mod modable. We can not address everyone's wants but we will try our best.

now im not saying we should wipe what we have (as i'm not sure if it's all already been integrated) but wouldn't it be easier to mod these gameplay changes in rather than out? Using a mod to mod a mod just seems silly to me.

I could care less for "alienated people". The ones who are working on this mod are doing it for themselves in the first place. You want something? Join in, become a contributor, spend your time helping us and make the changes as you see them.

Altered game mechanics affect other parts of gameplay (quests for example), so it is always easier to mod out than to mod in. Nothing silly.

I'm trying to contribute. I don't have any skill in modding, and can't contribute in that way. But i am trying to contribute with ideas, and thoughts. Trust me i would LOVE to contribute otherwise but i don't have a the time to learn the creation kit properly. Not to mention a horribly slow connection speed for uploading  any work done. (seriously on dial-up here)

and im not talking about alienating people who only have a passing interest. I know a great number of people who really do wish to play this mod, because they loved morrowinds world and lore, but don't want giant sweeping changes to the way the current game works. I'm not trying to get anybody angry or anything, or belittle anybodies work. Im just putting the thought out there.

I'm aware that the mechanics will make a big impact on the quests and such thats why im saying this before all that has been really put in. So that a decision will be made based on discussion and debate. I believe all opinions and angles should be taken into account.

Ok so on this... It is my understanding, and the way I will work, is that we use Skyrim gameplay (meanings the perks, the skills, what have you). Any overhauling that would "break" Skyrim mechanics will have to be optional.

So, to give an example :

To join faction XYZ, in Morrowind you needed to have Strength >= 30, Medium Armor >= 30

In Skywind, we will map the requirements to the closest skills as possible.

Now, if you'd rather have all the morrowind skills, there are mods out there (like Third Era Attributes, IIRC) and you can freely adapt them or create a patch for Skywind.

At the moment, the focus is not to reimplement gameplay mechanics. At least not for me.

Agree with digital, the base mod should be the most consensual possible, then we can create various mods so that everyone can enjoy it ;)

Perhaps we should have some sort of pros and cons list to measure what parts of Skyrim's gameplay we like and what parts we want to replace with something from Morrowind.

or alternatively we could just have the mods to change the gameplay to a more morrowind-esk style come packaged with the mod, but have it to where the player can pick and choose wich changes they want for themselves. That way every person who downloads it can be happy. If you want fast travel, then don't turn it off. If you don't want them part of your game then simply check the option that deactivates them. Same with quest markers, the attributes replacement system, and so on.

Users can currently (in Skyrim) choose which  gameplay features they like.  As has been said, simply don't fast travel, or turn off quest markers, there is no reason to not include those things in the game itself since both can be not used by the player already.
