How to keep local map fog of war from returning?

Submitted by Mike P on

In Morroblivion v0.59, after I reveal (i.e. clear) the fog of war on any local map, the fog returns once I leave and come back to the cell. Is there any way to keep this from happening, such that once a local map is "cleared," it stays that way permanently? I do realize this seems to be a general Oblivion (and Skyrim) problem, but you all seem pretty smart. ;) Thanks!

Oh yeah, and I don't want to use the "toggle fog of war" command - I'd still like the fog of war to be in the game, but after it's removed through exploration, it should then stay gone.

As far as I know this shouldn't be happening and it certainly doesn't happen for me. Are you perhaps using a cellbuffer mod or something similar?

Brainslasher - I am using Purge Cell Buffers (Cell Change). I did consider this being the problem, but I've read on other forums that others who have uninstalled this mod and started fresh still have the same map fog problem (and I'd like to keep PCB if possible). But I did notice that - like others on other forums - the problem may only be affecting certain areas in and near Vivec. I've explored the southern Bitter Coast and the Pelagiad/West Vivec region, and while the Vivec map areas and some nearby seem to keep getting "re-fogged" after I leave and return, the areas north of Seyda Neen seem to be OK for now.

Anyway, it is good to know this isn't a universal problem, so at least a fix may be possible, though I'm not sure what that might be at this point. Thanks!

Following up on this, it turns out I need PCB to keep my game from crashing when loading exterior cells, but with PCB back in my load order, this map problem (i.e. previously explored areas going "dark" again on the local map) has returned. I'm still not 100% sure PCB is causing the issue, but I'm reasonably certain.

So, can anyone tell me in layman's terms what exactly purging cell buffers does to the local map data (if anything) that may be causing this problem, and if there are any local map fog-of-war settings in an .ini file or somewhere else that could fix/prevent this?
