Hello once again my faithful subjects! I have taken it upon myself to start landscaping the northern most part of the Ashlands. I wasn't satisfied with the original concept for the region, so I have made a few changes to the design. I'm developing the northern part as more of a dust bowl area, still consisting of rocky areas since it's so close to Molag Amur. I have a few screenshots to show some more finished areas. Please let me know what you guys think of it so far.

Dude that looks absolutely stunning! It would be cool to use the Dragonborn Southern Soltheim weather there :P
agreed, apart from some mesh changes and variation in ash textures, its looking great.
Its looking gorgeous man :o
Yeah I was going to mention the textures but I figured a talented man like Squally was just using the current ones as stand-ins :P
Have been making serious progress on The Ashlands and areas around red mountain. Check out my latest vid for new footage from it and Molag Amur.

Another slick video, nice one
The Ashlands is coming along very well, other than obvious texture tiling and clutter issues. I'm hoping to have this implemented into the next release. It's hard to see a lot with the screenshots, but I hope you get a general feel for the area. As always, please leave feedback and suggestions in the comments.
You definitely have an eye for landscaping :)
i love how you've left it nice and open. It looks great!
I love the mix of ash dunes and dried vegetation. You make it all seem like a proper volcanic desert. Looking forward for more! I'm also interested to see how this will contrast with Molag Amur!
Its looking great, I really love last two pictures! Great work man
Just a quick update, i'm about half way done with the entire region. Mostly just small details and refining to finished. My progress should be merged into the next developer update.
Making serious progress on this area, and I got to say so myself, it's looking incredible. I wouldn't look at the screenshots if you don't want to "spoil" any of it, but here are a few new ones
I cant get over how good and natural the rock formations look :) its obvious that you have an eye for this stuff.
btw its awesome that you show ur progress so frequently give us an idea of what to expect.
I love it Squally. You're really able to portray the desertic and desolate feel of the ashlands without making it feel barren. My hat to you, this is clearly one of the best-looking regions we have yet to see!
the landscape/formations themself are good, but i think this shows we need to improve the meshes, such as ash covering the rocks in cracks, and some variation in ash textures.
The ash ground textures are awesome!
Will there be epic parallax if you're doing new meshes?
only thing i see that i dislike are those gaint bones not to nit pick it ore somthing but there arnt any creature in morrowind that can produce those bones cant u rplace it whit the husk of a daed silt strider ore somthing the rest al looks awsome
Needs more ground variation. I wish I had gotten this region :(
Well just because there isn't anything with that large of bones there now doesn't mean there wasn't at some point...
I mean there aren't any emperor crabs walking about but but you've still got the shell of one taking up a large portion of ald'ruhn.
Just think of them as fossils.
Also yeah, a bit more scrub brush would look pretty cool beneath the bases of the rock formations.
I wish I were able to do more than just nitpick the work of the extremely talented folks on here, but I can't even seem to figure out how to open the construction kit.
Amazing job though.

I'm not exactly a lore guru, but weren't there dragons in Morrowind a really long time ago? But then again, if they did die a long time ago, wouldn't the bones be buried a lot deeper than that?
There were dragons in Morrowind a long time ago but they were killed by the Cliff Racers. I can't lie that I'd love to see a few of these terrible creatures nesting in the bones of one of their preys :D
They did exist only a long time ago however, so what you said is also correct. Still it'd be nice to have one carcass laying around somewhere with cliff racers in it like vultures as an easter egg.
i think there was talk and some stuf about stone dragon fossiels dont remmeber if the did somthing whit it but the bones just say to me skyrim mammoth bones ore whale (but that would be even weirder because ravvana whale stil isnt swimming around
) not morrowind that what i am saying u knowe love the bones if the weren't saying skyrim to me also what i was saying before husk of a silt strider wouldnt that be cool te come across morrowind is filt whit reptiling ore insects like things so it would fit perfect
sorry english is hard to do perfect

Those were words :P
But actually I really like your idea of having Silt bones laying around in the Ashlands. That would add quite a bit of immersion to Morrowind and put emphasis on just how inhospitable Vvardenfell can be.
Well, silt husks. Arthropods generally don't have endoskeletons. :P
UPDATE: I've decided to experiment with darker and more red colors for the region, and I found some I'm very satisfied with. For now, the mesh colors will remain the same sandy-white color, but that will change in the future. Ground texture variation is next on the list. Check it out.
I'm sorry Squally but I'm going to have to disagree with you. It looks like there is simply no more ash in the ashlands anymore. I understand its nice to see some color and contrast but it killed the desolate, hostile feel of the area. The snapshots from your second set of pictures in the thread looked far more natural in terms of giving life to the volcanic desert. Now the lands look lush and fertile - far from what they're supposed to be. A good way to balance this idea vs. what I'm feeling however would be to saturate the outer portions of the ashlands so that the transition from the west gash and the grazelands feel a little less jarring and the progression to greyscale is gradual rather than instantaneous. Just a thought, but please consider.
Agreed with Tajnarasha. I like the whiter textures more betterer :P. The lack of saturation (presumably because it's a volcanic desert and there's ash everywhere) definitely has a greater sense of foreboding. Maybe, for variation's sake, use a cooler color palette where you want more diversity? Still looks stupendous, though! :)
While I would like to see some variation in color in the ashlands, I have to agree with Taj, the whiter tone of the ash looks better. Maybe if you can mix match them where this brownish red color fits, it may look good.
I like the red tone, but I think my bias is looking at the same textures for close to a couple of years now.
How about red tone closer to the mountain where the bulk of the red blight is. Can still paint a few mixes in here and there to mix things up?
i imagined something much darker and more red rather than bright desert orange :/
My two cents: the grey was better. Far, far better. A reddish texture would probably look alright around Blighted areas close to Red Mountain, though.
It looks too much like sand. These are ashlands and need to be grey, it's like the trademark of Morrowind.
I liked the grey.
Hey all, sorry for the delayed response! As I stated, I was experimenting, so thanks for all the feedback. I've actually got new updated textures and with them is the same white-sandy color, but a bit more grey. It looks fantastic and i'll upload some new screen shots in the future!
I think the occasional red rock formation or strata could be good to break up the constant grey, but yeah, ash is grey. That's just the way it should be.
Can't wait to see what the new one looks like.
Here's the news about the recent eruption of a volcano in Indonesia. There's quite a bunch of photos that show what a disaster it is. And yes, ash is certainly grey. Please don't mind the Russian text - I am just too lazy to check for the English analogue of the news.

EDIT: These are not final and just a test for color. Please disregard. Will have no texture colors coming soon.
Update: Still going to darken ground textures and change weather, but for now, landscaping as usual! I thought I'd share this :D
Awesome! Is that Dragonborn weather in combination with an ENB? If so, which ENB?
Nope! It just started to get foggy, and I don't use ENBs. I don't know what was going on, but I had to get a screen shot :P
Actually, I'd imagine ashlands would look like this most of the time. That would be awesome at least. Makes sense with all the ash and smoke carried around by wind, it really gives that dusty impression.
Wow, that's crazy haha - suits perfectly!
This is awesome, the detail on the landscape is amazing! It has a really dark and harsh feel to it, can't wait.

Looks awesome!
I'm trying to give you karma but my account is broken :/ Looks AMAZING!
The landscaping itself looks awesome, but those textures make it look more like sand than volcanic ash.
