Dunmer Physique, faces, hairstyles and clothing.

Submitted by Dragomir on

Quite some time ago we figured we need to establish looks for Dunmers. The ones in Skyrim looked alright, but they were suited for Skyrim style, not Morrowind. To me, and many others, they looked way too barbaric and tough to fully complete Morrowind's characters. Therefore, I decided I'd design some faces and the average body our beloved Dunmer race (not finished yet though).

So far I made:

Hlaalu faces and hairstyles - They're very well kept, combed and stylish. No scars, smooth skin, flamboyant and cunning.

Redoran, warriors with lots of daedric-inspired tattoos, scars and proud look in their eye

And of course Telvanni, ancient crazy wizards.

Ashlander faces, Cammona thugs, commoners, women, average physique and many more coming soon ;)

Looking at Bethesda's Neloth and Lleril Morvayn from Dragonborn, I think you got Redoran and Telvanni pretty good. Fyr looks as scowly as I remember him in Morrowind. And considering the king at the time of Morrowind was Hlaalu, their finer appearance makes sense.

They were also the most imperialized of the Dunmer, so it would make sense for then to be more "western" than members of other Houses. Except the Commana Tong types, of course.

Yes.  All my yes.  New hairstyles, those awesome ritualistic scars, the loads of ear rings... Please figure out a way to implement all this!

I wouldn't be drawing that if I didn't discuss it with Ravanna and other 3D and CK wizards earlier ;)

As long as none of the new hairstyles look like the Raiders from Fallout 3, I'm fine with new hairstyles XD Heck, those odd punk-style cuts in Skyrim bother me too.

They're really nice.
Talking about clothing, what do you think of this artwork?

I think it would be incredibly cool if, for example, a travelling merchant wears it.
The author says it's an ashlander traveller.
Anyway, I think it fits right with the shalk hat.

would new complexions be possible? Some dunmer seem to have decorative circle-shaped scarring.

Picture dump of the angular, thin features I'd like to see. Kind of closer to an altmer, but still crueler.

I'm really loving the cultural distinction between the three houses. Being able to visibly identify members of different houses is going to be huge for immersion.

Right, added it to my doodling thread, but it should definetly go here too. Revisited the face ideas, making the male much more... Menacing? Well, at least definetly emphasized the Dunmeric facial features.

The bodies are based of their Morrowind models. At first I thought they were just badly modelled, but looking again closely in comparison to other races - the elves had a different physique, and Dunmer were especially thin-waisted, but had some muscle on limbs. I also took a great deal of inspiration from Saint Felms depictions.

I think this is a great body proportion sketch. The Dunmer are known for being great spellswords - adapt at both bladed combat and destructive magic. This fits them perfectly - slender, thin-waisted, with muscled limbs (but not like a Nord or Orc, for obvious reasons).

Bosmer are small and agile, making great archers and sneaky thieves. Aldmer are tall and lanky, better suited for magic than physical prowess.

Out of the mer, I'd say the Dunmer are the most adept at physical hand-to-hand combat, which you capture quite well in this image and description.

Am I the only one that thinks the Dunmer facial complexions almost mimics the elf's? For example the high cheeckbones, long ears and slightly stretched eyes. The art is brilliant by the way, but maybe stick to black or gray hair colours. It's a bit off-putting to see bright orange contrasting against the dark blue skin. I think the same goes for the face painting are jewelry, keep the colours darker.

Well, considering they are elves...

Ah, my bad. I phrased it wrong. I meant how they are different from the common elves of Skyrim. Because of the years of difference and location, etc, I reckoned they'd change somehow.

I'm doltish when it comes to Elder Scroll races, sorry.

On the subject of Ashlander appearance, just throwing ideas out here but you might want to look at Tuskens from the star wars universe as well as Darth Krayt facial tattoos for inspiration:

I would imagine that the Velothi hold the same cultural rules as the Tuskens that it is shameful to show skin in public as both follow a nomadic culture living in barren wastelands, so clothing on ashlanders should be from head to toe in public areas.

However i think in more private locations they would show their faces and include some form of tattooing or scarification that symbolizes their family as well as their importance within the tribe.

Yes. Would be nice to see body painting on ashlanders and Dagoth Ur cultists.

Ashlanders will not only have face paints - facial tattoos will be common among most Dunmer warriors (Redoran, bandits, Cammona Tong), and Ashlanders too. However one thing that will set the Ashlanders apart is scarifications.

i couldn't agree more. the chitin armor, and the boiled netch leathor armor always felt reminiscent of the tuskens.
