UI: Inventory, Crafting, Map & Dialogs

Submitted by bunneh on

Hello, good people! Want to share some points which matter to me. I really think that both Oblivion and Skyrim were pretty good games but there was one little thing which was destroying my experience - the UI. It was so space and time consuming and user unfriendly that it was literally the thing which was stopping me from playing those games. Yeah, I know about SkyUI and it helped me a lot but it did not affect crafting menu and it did not allow me to switch into grid view which I love so much since Morrowind and World of Warcraft. The other thing I did not like in Skyrim is map. Old fashion 2D map with a beautiful background art and possibly exploration fog would look so much better for me. And the last thing is dialogs. I've recently watched your development video on youtube and I truly think that you should stick to Morrowind styled dialogs which had text with blue interactive links and red colored sentences indicating changes to your inventory etc. With voice acting and facial animations it would be simply perfect - better than both Morrowind and Skyrim.

So to sum up my suggestions are:

1. Possibility to switch between table and grid view in inventory and merchants. Table for seeing additional info like armor and weight without need to hover the item and for sorting these values. Grid for seeing more items on the screen for quicker actions.

2. 2D map with background art.

3. Morrowind dialog UI with Skyrim voice acting with facial animations.

Hope you will consider this and sorry for my bad English. Thanks!

Impossible requests are impossible.

Please incorporate these new UI elements for us.

Smerk to the rescue! Ok with UI elements were going to need someone who is good at flash. I"m actually learning flash so it may be possible to apply UI elements later. But it has yet to be seen. The game mechanics team has been working on figuring out how UI elements can be implemented but we are yet to have successes on the matter. So maybe later we will add UI elements but at this time we do not have the "know how" in that area yet. As for the voice acting and facial animations, the skywind team is working on that as we speak. Smerk out! :P

Yes, I do realize that it's an early alpha and a lot is to be done and changed. Just posting this topic cause it might affect someone's decision later when it comes to UI implementation. Thanks again for reading it.

It is not possible to have block of texts similar to morrowind. It's not just a UI matter, it's also a Topic/TopicInfo/Responses question.

Can you explain me what does that mean?

It means that Skyrim works differently and what you want is impossible due to technical reasons.

That's really bad... :C

you could always... just play morrowind? or OpenMW ?

Since Dialogs are being re-organized and many more conditions added, it really makes no difference using Skyrim's UI.

Found some awesome pictures, not sure if someone has finished this:

Such an awesome UI!

Then download that or search on a modding community. One of the reasons of this project is that people like Skyrim's UI and while it is not perfect, it has some nice points.

I've seen those too, they were never released though.

It is a pity about the map not being possible, the one thing I hated about Skyrim initially was the map but got used to it in the end. Still though, would have loved a map closer to Oblivion or Morrowind.

A bit of topic, but if you want a cool semi-2d/semi-3d paper map for skyrim I recommend Warburgs 3D Paper World Map http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25501/?.

I really hope some talented modder will make something like this for Skywind somewhere in the future as it is nice to look at and really useful, but until than I'm satisfied with the current map.

As for the rest of the UI, I like skyrims UI if it is used together with SkyUI, I'm not a fan of the grid like inventory of Morrowind, I found that rather appalling.

Very nifty map for Skyrim, I might try it myself :P now get back on topic *whips*

On the dialog system I'm sure digital is probably right. But I'm really hoping that we can do some stuff to the dialog system to make it less cumbersome. But we will be messing around with the UI though. More details will be posted at a later time. :)

Yes, this is I call the good news! :)

I've probably said this before, but if we had a paper map, we could include all the details of landscape work that is yet to be done without remaking the 3d Skyrim-style map (because of the lack of LOD rocks and stuff).

I can work on that if you want. What size would we be looking to make it?

I know this seems to be going against the general opinion of the thread but I rather like the 3d map. In the end it doesn't matter to me either way its done. But let it be known that not everybody hates the current version. :P

I don't hate 3d map either, it's just that it's harder to make with the lack of assets.

gotta love the 2D map idea
