autosave.ess and autosave.bak are corrupted

Submitted by ehchandler on

Last night as I was playing the solstheim main questline on morroblivion, the game suddenly crashed after completing the sun stone portion of the Skaal Test of Wisdom quest.  Everytime thereafter, when I would load the game, I would click on the load button on the game main menue, and the game would suddenly exit, without windows telling me about a crash.  Upon loading Wrye Bash, a notification came up saying: Corrupted Saves - autosave.bak and autosave.ess . About half of my saves have purple check boxes in Wrye Bash.

I have found a solution online to a similar problem where one would move the autosave.ess to a new folder and rename autosave.bak to autosave.ess, but it seems that that would require the .bak file to be not corrupted as well, which is the case with me. So, how do I fix this.

Note: Sorry if this is not a morroblivion specific problem.  I am not computer savy.  Virtually all I know about computers, modding, and file manipulation is from reading forums online.  So if it is a pure oblivion problem, I wouldn't know.

Thanks

This is in fact a problem with Oblivion itself. It is generally recommended to disable all sorts of autosave in Bethesda's games and use regular saves instead.

Unfortunately, once the save is corrupted there's not much you can do to get it working again. You'll have to load one of your previous saves and continue from there.

P.S. Bloodmoon questline is not yet debugged, so there is not much point playing it now anyway.

Any chance of Posting the Original  ( .bak ) file to have a Look at. you  do have a Save to go Back to don't you.
