Voice Acting Situation

Submitted by RustyPirate on

Hey I wanted to audition for any npc voice roll but I have no equipment or anything, but I do have an iphone app which allows me to record clean  lines but I can't post it here in the forums. The app is voice memos. I can email it however and if it's good enough I'm hoping that someone can manipulate it and use it. If this possible and can give email through PM that would be great but if not anyone that has another solution please let me know.

Why not just email them to yourself and then download it and then reupload it from your PC onto the site.

Good idea but a have almost no pc knowledge so I don't really know how to simply download it. Copy and paste I can do.

How would this require any PC knowledge...If you can't figure out how to do this how do expect to a help. You need to know how to upload and download stuff because if you good your gonna need a better mic than an iphone. The file should come as an attachment on your email and even if that software doesn't work there are dozens of free voice recording apps on the iphone that you could use.

I'm almost positive an app isn't going to give you the quality you'll need for VA projects. Luckily you can get a decent mic relatively cheaply. Couple good choices are Blue Snowball and Samson Go Mic. I got a lemon snowball so I had to get a new one--I went with the Go Mic, and love it. You'll also want to use either a pop filter (also easy and fairly cheap to acquire) or just wrap your mic in a thin trouser sock or hose. Yeah, that's panty-hose, just don't think about it too much, it works pretty well on a budget. LOL

You'll want to use Audacity for your recording program. It's free, and it's fairly intuitive to use. There's a tutorial posted here somewhere, but there are also tons of tutorials you can find on youtube. This stuff is really easy to teach yourself how to do, I had to teach myself how to do it. I had some help cleaning up the quality from some of the folks here, but you gotta get your basics first so the project leads can help you fine tune it.

Finally, the easiest place to upload your samples to is SoundCloud or MediaFire. I have both, but you'll see a lot of folks use SoundCloud for quick uploads. It's also free, and pretty easy to sign up for and put to use.

Trust me, you don't need a TON of technical know-how to be able to teach yourself how to do this. If I can learn it, anyone can, and by the way, the stuff I did when I first got here and started learning the ropes was CRAP. ;) It is well worth taking the time to get yourself set up properly to submit good samples. Put your best face forward. Do that, and the quality gurus here will be able to help you fine tune things much more easily.

Good luck! :D
