Game crash when Azura appears after defeating Dagoth Ur

Submitted by Anubisan on

I just defeated Dagoth Ur and attempted to leave the cave, but every time I go through the door which should trigger Azura's final message, the game crashes to the desktop. I have tried this many times now and I cannot get through the door without triggering a crash.

First of all do you have the latest version of morrowind_ob.esm?

And have you installed the support files that come with the latest version?

Azura is supposed to appear as soon as you enter the Facility cavern from the Heart Chamber ... and play a video when you get close to her.

I downloaded and re-installed everything when v027 was released. I also installed the support files that came with it. For the most part, everything has been very stable. However, I have noticed crashes when exiting some shrines and also this crash on Azura's final message/video.

As soon as I open the door, I see Azura standing a few feet away and then the game crashes about 1 second later.

I will try re-installing the morrowind_ob.esm file and the support files, but I doubt this will make a difference as I just did this a few days ago...

Have you tried purging cell buffers ... I don't know if cell overloads are possible in interiors ... but most crashes have been traced to this.

In your savegeame, open the console, type in pcb ( next press enter and close the console) and then try to go again to the area where Azura appears.

Also instead of re-downloading all the support files ... just download this {do not check the esp ... just copy in the resources} and try again.

If you are handy with the CS I can probably also suggest a few more tests to figure out whats wrong.

I've tried both of your first suggestions, but the game is still crashing as soon I go through the door. Any other ideas?

I don't have a ton of CS experience, but I am a fast learner.

Best to rule out any possiblity of a conflict, etc. Please try disabling all mods except Oblivion.esm and Morrowind_ob.esm. Exactly when and how does it crash?

The crash happens after I have already defeated Dagoth Ur and destroyed the heart. I go back to the entrance to the cave, open the door and walk through. About 1 second after I step through the door, the game crashes. I get the message saying that the executable has stopped working. If you need more details beyond that, please let me know what I should find for you...

I also tried disabling everything but oblivion.esm and morrowind_ob.esm and attempted to go through the door again (as was suggested). The game crashed again...

I am going to try completely re-installing everything tonight and will attempt yet again to go through the door. I will let you know what happens...

I doubt if reinstalling is going to help. I have tested this and I CTD immediately upon entering the room as well. I make it into the room, but as the camera starts to swing back to it's normal position it freezes. The "Dwarven Crank" does not open the way back from the chamber; I had to TCL to get back. I am not going to be in any position to debug this before the weekend. Hopefully Hashmi will get to it before then.

I'm glad to hear its not just me.

Strangely, I had no problem with the Dwarven Crank. It opened the door for me without issue.

The dwarven crank is made "un-activateable" when you first enter the heart chamber, to prevent you from escaping. It is reverted back to normal when Akulakhan has been destroyed.

If you are not already doing it, I would suggest waiting inside the heart chamber until you get the journal entry ... and then leave.

I too can't get to it before the weekend ... and even then I won't necessarily know how to fix it: I've gone past this position over a dozen times when testing citadel dagoth without any problems. I haven't tested it after the merge though so yea...

In my case I had certainly waited until after the journal entry because I was loligagging to watch the animations. The Dwarven Crank Handle made the noise once, but did not open the doors. Thereafter it did not even make the noise when I activated it. What is the exact order of events that happens after the player enters the door? Presumably Azura approaches, then what? Does the video play right away? Does she move toward the player & speak?

For the crank open the console, select it and type in setdestroyed 0 That should double-make sure that the script isn't interfering. btw the script that handles this is the one on the heart of Lorkhan. For Azura please see the next post.

EDIT: I think I know what the problem might be ... Azura is missing textures and normal maps in the file I uploaded.

For a temporary fix please remove the clothing item in her inventory and try again.

I'll upload the missing textures this weekend.

Removing Azura's body from her inventory solved the CTD issue. At first Azura greeted me with the standard Dunmer "Well Met" greeting. She also seemed to get turned around once the video was done, and had her back turned to me. The Dwarven crank did not open the doors again. Once through the doors and into the room with Azura, the doors on the other side were stuck in an infinite loop and kept opening/closing over and over again.

For the dwarven crank open the console, select it and type in SetDestroyed 0

That should fix it just incase the script is not working ...

Don't know about the well met greeting, any dialouge is the same as the original ... the heart of lorkhan said that to me as well when I was testing :p

I'll look into the infinite rotating doors and azura.

It is easier for me to type TCL than the rest; I was just letting you know. Azura and the Heart of Lorkhan greet you based on race, as Oblivion dialog is based on race. That is why I had originally set the Heart of Lorkhan as the Dagoth Ur race. I believe the Well Met greeting can be avoided with a StartConversation that forces her to say something else instead.

It is easier for me to type TCL than the rest; I was just letting you know.

The script uses setdestroyed 1 to make the handle un-activateable ... it sets it back to 0 to make it useable when everything is done. If you can make it work with that command then it means the script has not finished its work ... otherwise there is some other problem.

Here are the missing textures for Azura: download

Hashmi1,

Thanks for figuring this out. I tried to download the missing Azura textures, but the link isn't working. It takes me to the Google Docs download page, but it won't actually start downloading.  Any chance you could post the fix elsewhere?

I have the same problem with the link, and there is the same problem with the link for the missing 6th House texture.

Issue has been resolved. Missing textures are in the Additional Support Files 2 download. I will fix the rest, except that Azura has a habit of turning her back on the player after the video is done. That one is a bit beyond me, sorry.

I'm running V046 and after I kill dagoth ur [heart is a missing mesh by the way] and I leave to speak to azura she is a big yellow star so when I go to speak to her the game crashes I re downloaded the link at the top and installed it but still she's a star, I re installed support files 2 she's still a star so I go into the cc and find her just to make a copy of her to see what she looks like and...shes still a star that makes the cc crash, how would I go about fixing this so I can finally beat the main quest to morrowind. Also I would like to fix the heart texture as well
