Yeah this was something that got mixed reviews when Morrowind first came out. On one hand, it's far more realistic that you can't join certain combinations due to the storyline (i.e. the empire is taking over Vvardenfell so there is conflict between imperial factions (guilds) and the native Vvvardenfell factions, as well as the pre-existing conflict between ther great houses.
On the other hand some people saw this as a heavy-handed method of forcing players to re-play the game over and over again to experience different quest lines. In a game as big and long as Morrowind, this involved a lot of work.
There is a very useful table here: http://uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Guilds#Reaction_Table
That shows how each faction feels about all the other factions in Morrowind. I'm not sure if this got carried over to Morroblivion or not
So... Let me see if I got this: I can only join one house, but several guilds?
If I later one want to join one of the other houses, is there a console command to make this happen?
Same here, I thought it was a pity that you only could join one of the houses in Morrowind. I didn't want to start my character all over again...
"Personally, I don't like this part of Morrowind at all. I do not like racial, ethnic, and religious hatreds being carried over into games. There is more than enough hatred in the world; we don't need more in games, especially since, as the Neravarine, I will be the peacemaker than brings the houses together. Why will they let me be their Hortator, but not join them?"
While I definitely see where you're coming from and agree with you on how life should be, you're just not facing up to reality.
For example, if you're joining a political party, can you join both the Democratic and Republican Party?
The house tension brings a sense of reality to Morrowind. As long as there are people, there are governments, meaning political tension. Politics in Morrowind definitely makes the game feel more realistic and gritty. Morrowind isn't a utopia. Not by a long shot. But then again, neither is the real world.
Also, much of your Elder Scrolls lore is focused a lot around political strife when you think about it. Meaning politics is very important to TES games.
And if you didn't have political fighting in Morrowind, you would lose a ton of sweet quests!
I toally agree with robertneville777.
Additonally I really dislike the fact that in Oblivion you can be a lead assasin, an Archmage, the arena champion, the master thief and the head of the fighters guild all at the same time with a single character ... who might as well be a merchant by class :S
In morrowind it was still theoratically possible to be all of these (the only "forced" thing is that you can not join all three Great Houses) ... but that required really hard work and effort ... alongwith thoughtful political maneuvering (like deciding to not listed to Trenonius when tells you to kill all the heads of House Telvanni ... and geting away with the same quest reward by defeating him in the arena instead).
The statement about political manoeuvring is right. I always become all of them and it takes forever, especially the Thieves/Fighters Guild storylines because at one point you need to bounce between quests for them both to accomplish everything.
With the Great Houses just make a root save after the other factions and before you join a House. Then, once you have completed the first house you choose save, reload the root save and choose the next house. Technically they might be considered different games but its pretty close.
I apologize for resurrecting this, but would it be possible to use console commands to join all factions. I realize this may break everything, but I would still be willing to try. Thank you.
Yes, you can join all three houses via console commands. However, some quests can be broken because of this. In the original game, I'm a member of all three houses :)
Thank you very much for your post on the houses and of course on the project as a whole. Is there nothing special I need to do for joining all of the guilds? I plan on playing this game for the rest of my life.
Haha alright, thank you for all of your help.
There's a Morrowind mod which allows you to play through all three Great Houses quest lines without any conflicts. It's called "Join all Houses" or something like that. You can use that for reference if you want to.
