Custom Race Mods Not Working

Submitted by Auriel on

Hi, all!

Maybe I'm slowpoke, but I tried to add to Morroblivion custom race (namely - Epic Elves from Tesnexus). After I checked esp, corresponding race simply didn't appear in chargen menu. I even tried to rename master file from Oblivion.esm to Morrowind_ob.esm, without any result. Where I went wrong?

Are you using any other mods besides epic elves morroblivion and oblivion? Do you have obmm?

this elves Are very similar from anime... it is bad

Well, first off, I'd advise you to DEFINITELY change your Oblivion.esm back to the original name. That could cause all kinds of weirdness. (And if you're like me, confusion later on if you can't remember which is which.)

Second, do you have anything running that allows custom races to show up in the chargen? There are stand-alone mods, and the Unofficial Oblivion Patch also has a fix that makes custom races playable.

Here's misunderstanding. I had changed not the name of the ACTUAL FILE Oblivion.esm, but the name of the master file in PLUGIN. This is done by TES Gecko, for example...

Yeah

I had KT_CustomRaceFix before. Installing UOP instead changed nothing.

We may discuss your anime-hating elsewhere. Here we are discussing Morroblivion.

If you have the kt custum race fix and they aren't showing up in the character gen screen there may be a problem with the esp for the elven race. Give me a few minutes to download and install it and i'll take a look at it to let you know.

I also tried a few other custom races - Hidden Elves, Blood Elves, etc... Fail.

I seeee. I stand corrected.

Ok can you post your load order for me?

Here's it:

  • Oblivion.esm
  • Morrowind_ob.esm
  • Kani's Elves.esp
  • KT_CustomRaceFix.esp
I also have Shivering Isles and Knights, but turned them off.

Well there is a problem with the esp for the elves the bodies point to the wrong textures which may cause them to be invisible but they should still show up (at least the page for them should show up) in the character gen screen. Let me enable the esp and see if they show up in my load.

This is not a problem at all. I have been modding before and I can fix it. The trick is they simply didn't show in chargen...

They also have the meshes pointing to latamere textures which aren't installed with the mod so there is NO texture for the new race. that may be what's causing the race not to show up in the Character gen screen I'll let you know in a few minutes.

It show's up in my character gen so it must be a problem with your install. I'd wipe the install out, do a disk defragment, restart the computer then try a clean install. Just install the oblivion with shivering islse and knights if you want them and then the Epic elves race and kt's custom race fix. Put KT Before your race in the load order. Your load order should look something like

  • Oblivion.esm
  • Knights.esp
  • DLCShiveringIsles.esp
  • KT_CustomRaceFix.esp
  • Kani's Elves.esp

That should fix the problem. Since none of the other races are showing up it points to a problem with the base oblivion install. You might aslo want to use the ArchiveInvalidated program to make sure oblivion is looking in the right places for the files for the race mods.

Edit: If it still doesn't show up after that then I would install one of the body replacement mods also such as the hgec or exnems or roberts to see if that fixes it. It may be that it needs a race pack other than the vanilla to have the correct body and textures since the race replacers override the vanilla completely.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I will try to reinstall clean copy and post out results tonight (you know, in Kiev it's 23:33 now).

BTW, guys... Morroblivion is really great thing. I was more than impressed.

What if your custom race esp loaded very last in your load order? Would that fix it?

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Have you tried it?

"Your load order should look something like

Oblivion.esm

Knights.esp

DLCShiveringIsles.esp

KT_CustomRaceFix.esp

Kani's Elves.esp"

Just finished. Here's my steps:

  1. Erased whole Oblivion.
  2. Installed UOP
  3. Installed Kani's Elves
  4. Installed HGEC
  5. Checked out: all works.
  6. Installed Morroblivion just like in Install Guide.
  7. Ordered as mentioned above.
  8. Performed Archive Invalidation
  9. Checked out: Game is crashed after starting new game.

I carefully installed all as in instructions:

  • Vvardenfell Imports (three parts & three patches)
  • Complete Installation (three parts)
  • Master file
  • Additional Support (two parts)
  • Eloth's Items & Ingredients
  • Plant Replacer
  • Texture Replacer Master
  • Complete Weapons Retexture
  • Bloodmoon Texture Replacer
  • Darknut Weapons
  • Morrowind Music

Cycle was repeated twice to ensure all is installed. Where I had failed this time?!

Please describe exactly how it crashes and when. The most common cause of a straight out crash is a missing Master file, or a Master file that is loaded After the mod it's supposed to be master to. Following that, there are resources required for most race mods; if you don't have the resources, then crash.

Please describe exactly how it crashes and when

Start New Game - then immediately crash

The most common cause of a straight out crash is a missing Master file, or a Master file that is loaded After the mod it's supposed to be master to.

This is first I checked out. Master file is on it's proper place, and so in loading order.

Following that, there are resources required for most race mods; if you don't have the resources, then crash.

This is second I checked out. I tried to start vanilla Morroblivion, with Oblivion.esm and Morrowind_ob.esm only, and with Oblivion.esm, Morrowind_ob.esm and UOP. The crash persists.

The humour is that I already had started Morroblivion on previous Oblivion install. So I suspect I simply missed something very simple...

The symptoms you are describing are indicative of a missing Master File. There is very little else that will cause Oblivion to crash before it finishes loading. For instance, attempting to play the game with only Morrowind_ob.esm active will cause an instant crash because Morrowind needs Oblivion.esm as a Master File. It sounds to me like your race mod needs one or more Master Files that are not present. Use a utility like OBMM or Wrye Bash that can look for and spot missing Master Files.

I already have done it. Here's the results.

If you crash when launching Oblivion and nothing else active, then the problem is much deeper. Please make sure your game is patched to 1.2.0416. I would start there. Then try deleting the INI files and have Oblivion recreate them. You can try running the mod checker, but this list is not very extensive; there isn't a whole lot that can go wrong with it. I presume you have the HGEC Body Replacer installed. Epic Elves is going to require it's resources.

That helped. Weird, but custom race also works... Thank you for assistance.

Glad it's fixed :)

I have another weird effect. The same config as above on screenshot, the same custom race. Hair style at the beginning of chargen doesn't change, appears to be fixed only on "default" setting in CS. But if you open console (even before leaving the ship) and type showracemenu all styles are on their places and hairstyle may be easily changed.

I believe that issue pops up as some races (Vicec/Dagoth Ur/Ash Vampire) that should be unplayable are still active. Scrolling through them makes it impossible to change hair/eye color. Using showracemenu wworks though.

Thanks, I'll try to turn them out and write out results.
