Oblivion install path

Submitted by Chuang Tzu on

I tried searching this and other forums and can't seem to find usable info. I'm using Windows 7 and when I install Oblivion, I don't get any options for choosing the installation path, so I can only install it in the default x86 folder. I've tried looking for Oblivion in the registry and can't find it there, and when I called Bethesda (which was some old advice on a forum a year or two ago somewhere) to ask about how to change the installation path in the registry, they told me that Windows 7 doesn't support Oblivion so they can't help me. I've heard rumors about being able to do that, but so far have not found any concrete descriptions of a solution that works. Morrowind isn't a problem - during installation, I can choose the installation path.

Has anyone been able to deal with this?

Thanks,

Josh

Sins when do you need to install a game to run it?
When a program is on the HD it should run.

I don’t even have Oblivion installed and it runs.
Got multiple Oblivion folders on my HD and they all work.

I am on Windows XP but that should not matter.

... Yes, but how do you get it onto the HD in the first place? Waft the disc at your computer and hope it hops on? Magic?

So, when you run the installer, you have absolutely no other option than installing to the default /Program Files directory? The "Browse" button isn't there? Have you installed Oblivion successfully before?

Hi Badgerlegs,

Exactly. I've been able to install it on this computer, and have it installed now in the default file. But during installation, the browse button does not show up for some reason. In the past, I've seen on other forums that this happens to some people running Windows 7, but I haven't seen any real solutions to the problem. When I installed it on my older computer running XP, I had no problems, and the option to choose a folder was there.

Maybe I should try the wafting thing.

I don’t know anything about Windows 7 but why don’t you move the game folder to the location you prefer?

Hi Sjors,

Moving the game folder doesn't actually solve the problem - it needs to be installed in the folder specified during installation or the game won't work.

And actually, I just got it to work for me. I had bought a second version of the game, the GotY edition, but had never installed the game from that disc, just from my non-GotY edition. With the GotY edition, I could choose the installation path, so . . . never mind.
