CTD's on cell change and travel

Submitted by InsectEmu8 on

For some reason, completely random and unknown to me, my Morroblivion installation decides to crash on every cell change and whenever I fast travel or travel by ingame methods.  This problem appeared randomly, and I had not done anything between last playing it and before the problem appeared that could have possibly caused this.  It's ridiculous!  Anybody have any ideas of things I could check?

Things I've tried:

1) I recently flagged my game to use more than 2gb of RAM, because that was stupid... I have 8gb so I want to use at least half of it.  But I reverted those changes and it didnt help.

2) It's not the load order, I checked that

3) I'm running 2 ati graphics cards with crossfire, but despite the different settings it crashed every time.

4) It's not Cell Buffer Overload, this crash happens right when I start the game... There's no information to overload with

Did you read this: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Technical_Support#Crashes (first section on crashes)

Crashing on cell switching is a common problem.  I would think first thing to try is disabling crossfire and/or removing one video card.  Also, if you are using more than one monitor, stop doing that...

Crashes in Oblivion are almost always due to memory problems in some way; even if loading at the beginning if there is a lot for the game to process. This has happened to me in places other than Morrowind where I have had rooms with lots mannequins wearing lots of custom armor. First thing to do is try turning off view distant land. By itself this helps, and I personally have also been forced to turn it off while in Cyrodiil, because with FCOM installed there are a lot of the same problems. Vanilla Oblivion is sparsely populated for a reason; the game simply cannot handle too many Creatures/NPC's, and we are stretching it past the limit with Morrowind.

I've already tried finagleing with the crossfire settings, and disabling it. It didnt work to say the least.  And reading through most of those solutions, the only one that might work is completely reinstalling morroblivion (again)... which I'd like to avoid if possible.  I wish I had more than one monitor though, that would be awesome haha

Also, I've had LOD turned off for the longest time just because the loading screens make me impatient.  As for the amount of memory usage I'm still not sure, I've had this working for a while and it's randomly doing this to me now.

I've found that a missing nif or sometimes a missing texture can cause crashes too.  The yellow "!" doesn't always show up.

Some possible causes:

Have you installed the Unofficial Oblivion Patch,it is needed.?

And setting "Large" for the video setting in Oblivion is also needed for morroblivion imo.

Also Vvardenfel Exports and some other needed files might be installed wrongly.

And last but not least, your windows graphics card settings might be clashing with the Oblivion settings, for instance vsync on or off, frames ahead settings, bloom or HDG etc.

The version of obse used could also be a factor.

Hi all, new on here but ive been playing morroblivion scince v021 with very little problems just wanted to say fair play to all of you for bringing one of my favorite games ever back to life. just thought i should reply to this thread becasue i experienced this same problem after moving my installation of oblivion off my old pc and onto my new one and then installing  v050 of morroblivion. i tried turning off distant lod, and sometimes it worked but once it had crashed the savegame wouldnt even load without CTD , tried cell change purge mod which diddnt work either. i thought it must be my new pc  but then on the off chance i took my old installation off the old pc again which had v045      of morroblivion on it. and it worked, so could this possibly be a problem with the new version? some conflicting files or something?
