You have an unkown version of Oblivion

Submitted by Loki180 on

Hey guys so I have done all that is asked to install the mod/thing

Up to the point of installing the files (the big over 1gb file) So after seeing its going to take a long to download I decided to take a look at a companion mod for Oblivion (I love good companion mods!) But OBSE come up with the error

You have an unkown version of oblivion.

I have the GOTY Oblivion vertual version. So all the patches are already on the game, I have also got the Unofical patch too.

My question is does Morroblivion need OBSE to launch for it to work? I assume so haha but just in case.

But if it is needed then how do I fix it?

Thanks!

OBSE is required for Ely's Silent Voice and Levitation. You can't play Morroblivion without Ely's otherwise the dialog is unreadable. Go to Bethesda for the lates patches, even though your's should be current. It indicates the version in the lower left corner when you start Oblivion. You can also find links to patches on Nexus and elsewhere.

Yes you need to launch Oblivion [morroblivion] with the OBSE and also it helps if you have the OBMM installed too.

The Unoffcial oblivion patch is also dependent on the OBSE.

Your loading order should also be Oblivion.esm then morrowind_ob.esm then the official patch.

OBMM can be used to sort them.

If you are getting errors from the OBSE then it might need updating,or you have patched to a no CD version or something not recognised by OBSE.

Thanks guys.

I will take a look in the morrning.

The only thing I am thinking is that if I have the Game of the year edition then why would I need to install updates. Should they not already be on it? Also it is the Virtual download copy from steam. (Morrowind is not)

Also if the unofficol patch needs OBSE then why do I have an item from the patch that I can mess with options with?

Anyway in the morrning I will up date with the SI patch from Betha and hope its that simple haha. I will take a look at this post before doing anything. and of course will report back.

Thanks again for taking your time out to help me!

There is one thing that I forgot to mention and that is that the OBSE might not work with Steam versions of the game.

Check the readme that comes with the latest OBSE version to check.

There should be a file in the Oblivion root folder [part of the OBSE install] named obse_steam_loader.dll,if it is there then it should work with steam versions I quess.

Try updating to version 1_2_416 of the game even if you have the GOTY version as it might help,I do not think that SI needs updating but it does no harm to check.

And check that you have the lines below in your Oblivion.ini file both set to 1 as below.

bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
bUseArchives=1

I am pretty sure OBSE does not work with the Steam version of Oblivion because it is encrypted. Go to the OBSE site to check it out, but unless you plan on creating silent MP3's for every line of dialog in Morroblivion (by using Tes4Gecko) you will need to get a copy of Oblivion that OBSE recognizes. The Unofficial Patch does not require OBSE.

Agh ok that I am guessing is the prob then.

I do have the DvD copy of the game along with KOTN and SI, (all brought on day of relese so are oldish)

I was told that if I buy the game GOTY version of the game some times ago from steam then it would solve the You have unkown version of Obliviomn issue I was getting awhile back I was trying to get a mod to work but each time I tryed to patch I kept getting this error, But some times it all worked fine. I will install the DvD version tomorrow along with KOTN and SI then patch just with the SI patch and of course with all that is needed for Morroblivion.

But I do have an issue I donwloaded the massive file that was need. And rlly don't want to have to do it again. Is there away that you guys could tell me what was in there so I could grab it out of the oblivion data folder?

Like the Folder names and if there was anything else in it that was not in a folder. You know what I mean (i hope haha)

Thanks again.

Opps! sorry Dave, you are correct the patch does not need the OBSE,I was getting confused as morroblivion needs the patch and also the OBSE for some of it`s mods.?

Don't overcomplicate. Just Move your entire existing Data folder out of the way before you install, then move it back when you are done. I always save a copy of the Data folder from a fresh install, but that is up to you.

I'm not sure if I understood David and Ironman correctly, but OBSE works fine with Steam Oblivion. Download OBSE and there should be all the proper files and instructions in there about installing OBSE in a Steam Oblivion game.

And Steam keeps Oblivion up to date for you, so being on the most up to date version is probably not the problem? That's pretty weird.

Also make sure Steam isn't installed in c:/program files. If it is, move it somewhere else (it's pretty easy.)

Ok so I took a look at OBSE and there was nothing about the downloaded version of GOTY Oblivion (although it does not state on steam that it is the GOTY version but I assume cuz it came with KOTN and SI) on it. So it should work right?

So you want me to move the entire steam folder somewhere else? at the min Oblivion is

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\oblivion

So I will move the entire steam Folder to the desktop or somthing

Ok so I went ahead and played anyway. I got onto the game all seems well sept I need to esc each time somone talks if they have no spoken dialog.

I have not played Morrowind before so no idea what I am doing I am in a city called Vivec looking for a temple or somthing. When I talk to most of the NPCs all they say is 'I don't know you' or somthing like that.

Is this what they are surrpose to say? I have some options with some NPC like how to join a faction like the Temple or somthing. and browse a shop

What type of temple?

Are you looking for Mehra Milo by any chance?

if so head south through vivec to reach the temple and library of vivec

(or whatever they're called!)

1. Yeah, it should work. Just follow the instructions for a Steam install. 2. Here are instructions on moving your Steam installation: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129 Note that on step four, probably the best place to put your Steam folder in would be C:\
