Stray Random Crashes

Submitted by OLtos on

Below I have quoted the section of the download page titled "Stray Random Crashes".   I am suspiscious that this is a sound issue.  In Oblivion many many people complained about "stuttering" in the frame rate.  This issues was finally addressed very succesfully with the "Quiet Feet" mod.  It seems that the oblivion engine was choking on that particular looped sound.  Now I was playing MorrOblivion today and had found a place in the wilderness, (returning with the bone biter bow in Sul-Matul's quest), where I got that "random crash".  It was completely repeatable.  Every time I reloaded the game and tried to get back to camp it would crash at the same point.  I have also noticed this on others of these crashes, that reloading and simply trying again does not make them go away.  Anyway, when I was CTD I got the usual WIN7 error about the application closing.  I aknowledged that error and my speakers gave me a very nice POP, as though some residual bit of memory containing a sound file had let loose.   Given Oblivion's problems with sound in the past, that this might be a sound issue may be worth looking at.

regards,

OLtos

If you experience seemingly random crashes (usually in the wilderness) then this is because
of Cell Buffer Overrun, NOT something inherently wrong with cell XYZ.

Oblivion was simply not designed to encompass Morrowind and all it's denizens.

However, by doing three things, I have all but eliminated these crashes.

By doing these three things, I have gotten Oblivion back to it's normal level of "stability."

1. Purge Cell Buffers Mod: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9139
>>> Set to Purge with Every Cell, NOT just Loading.

2. Disable "View Distant Land" under Options.

3. Walk, don't run.

I can crash the game at will by running, and it does not take very long. I personally believe
that these crashes are because of the enormous number of creatures in the large Morrowind
Worldspace that taxes the Oblivion Game engine to the breaking point.

I do Not believe it is because of trees or poorly optimized meshes, as some others have suggested.

But, by doing these three things, I have gone from crashing every few minutes, to as I indicated,
Oblivion's normal level of "stability."

No. Crashes started happening after v003... after we started adding Morrowind creatures. My original conversion was remarkably stable, and I ran around and around Vvardenfell with stability I had NEVER experienced in Cyrodiil. That is why I still maintain that it is not poorly optimized meshes; it is not trees, and it is not NPC's themselves. Sound, footfalls, etc., were there when I was running around solid as a rock. Morrowind creatures spawn at a rate at least 3-5 times greater than Cyrodiil. I am hopeful that my having added pathgrids to Morrowind will help, and I certainly hope somebody gives me some feedback for having spent almost 30 hours working on it.

Hi, I wanted to say that this last week I downloaded the files (the whole 2.5 GB file) and tried this on my savegame. I got very excited to see Morrowind running on Oblivion engine. However, this excitement was off just some hours later...

- Everytime I wander outside towns I get CTD crashes on many certain points while running. Tried to not to run... but it too happens. Such points are daedric shrines, entering a town from the outside (Hloa Hoad by example).

- Changed Distant Lod folder name and it also crashes on the same spot!.

- Disabled all other mods I use and just leave the official dlc and unofficial patches checked. Nothing happens. Same CTD crashes on the same spots. Tried to get to where I want to go from another direction. Crash.

- In towns and in the wilderness I get occassional stuttering (my pc freezes for a moment and the continue rendering). If I do something while happening such stutter it will cause a CTD too. Also, FPS gets way too low (about 22-25) while on Oblivion I can get (40 - 60 FPS) having enabled all my mods and distant lod objects.

- I noticed some enemies do not have animations. Example: clanfear.

- Also I noticed that some enemies that are present on oblivion still uses the old Morrowind models. Examples: Frost Atronach, Golden Saint, Daedroth. The Fire Atronach is the only one I see correctly updated.

- I tried to start a new game. Still these CTD happens.

- On a unrelated subject, I find the quest incomplete. Examples: I did the Larrius Varius quest of killing the "bad people". When I finished with the last one of them I expected a message saying about my success. Nothing happened. I do not remember if in Morrowind was no such update.

- About messages, I found promotion messages very annoying. In original Morrowind I can do all the quests I want and then ask for a promotion repeatly in the very same conversation. On Morroblivion I need to exit conversation, wait for the complete quest message, wait for the elegible promotion message and so on...

- Finally I will list my PC resources: Nvidia GTX 590 3GB, 6 GB memory, Core I7 960 3.0 GHz. If such Morrowind Creatures is the problem, well I hope they may need to be removed. I saw the new guar and the netchs. Looks awesome but if it´s not guarantee stability better to remove them and use the old models.

Hmmm... no replies?

You have posted a laundry-list of complaints.  They should really be separate topics but...

jack.caceres- Everytime I wander outside towns I get CTD crashes on many certain points while running. Tried to not to run... but it too happens. Such points are daedric shrines, entering a town from the outside (Hloa Hoad by example).

You have a very high end PC, with very modern components.  Are your drivers 100% up-to-date? Are you running the Purge Cell Buffers mod on every cell change?  I have the same installation you do, and my game NEVER crashes, but my video card is a bit older (check my profile).  Then again, I am only running Morroblivion and a few other graphics mods (OBGE v3 and QTP) so maybe that's it...

I know people have had issues with the GTX 5xx series cards and Skyrim, while people with the older GTX 4xx series were not having those problems.  I wouldn't be surprised if those same problems happened in Oblivion.

jack.caceres- Changed Distant Lod folder name and it also crashes on the same spot!.

Or you could just disable distant land in the in-game video options.  I don't know what renaming the folder would do.

jack.caceres- Disabled all other mods I use and just leave the official dlc and unofficial patches checked. Nothing happens. Same CTD crashes on the same spots. Tried to get to where I want to go from another direction. Crash.

Try disabling the Shivering Isles unofficial patch, or even all of the DLC stuff.  This has helped some people prevent crashes.

jack.caceres- In towns and in the wilderness I get occassional stuttering (my pc freezes for a moment and the continue rendering). If I do something while happening such stutter it will cause a CTD too. Also, FPS gets way too low (about 22-25) while on Oblivion I can get (40 - 60 FPS) having enabled all my mods and distant lod objects.

This is odd given your high-end computer.  Oblivion is known to have a lot of problems with multiple monitors, so if you are using two monitors, try it with one.  Could also be your extremely high-end video card - Oblivion has been known to have problems with dual-GPU cards, and IIRC, the 590 is basically two GTX 580s.  Sucks, but that is what you get running a game on hardware that never existed when the game was developed (2002-2006)!

jack.caceres- I noticed some enemies do not have animations.

Hashmi1 built creatures that are more true to the orginal Morrowind models, but they are not actually the original Morrowind ones.  Originally, Morroblivion only had Oblivion models for all of those, so you were fighting the same Daedroths in Morrowind as in Oblivion.

jack.caceres- On a unrelated subject, I find the quest incomplete. Examples: I did the Larrius Varius quest of killing the "bad people". When I finished with the last one of them I expected a message saying about my success. Nothing happened. I do not remember if in Morrowind was no such update.

What quest?  Please post a UESP link.  "Larrius Varius" is not an NPC.  Do you mean this quest? http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Larrius_Varro_Tells_a_Little_Story

Did you go back to Larrius Varro and talk to him after killing all of the 'bad people'?  Did you get the ring/book rewards from him?  We need more details to really debug the quest.

jack.caceres- About messages, I found promotion messages very annoying. In original Morrowind I can do all the quests I want and then ask for a promotion repeatly in the very same conversation. On Morroblivion I need to exit conversation, wait for the complete quest message, wait for the elegible promotion message and so on...

Unfortunately, this is just how it has to happen due to the way faction ranks work in Oblivion.  At least, as I understand it.  I have looked at the scripts for this stuff in the CS, and I can't think of a better way than the way it is designed right now.

Otherwise, it would have to use the Oblivion system, where there is no "Advancement" topic.  Maybe that's better, but it wasn't the way Morrowind worked, and if you do it the Oblivion way, then you can't have skill requirements for each rank.

jack.caceres- Finally I will list my PC resources: Nvidia GTX 590 3GB, 6 GB memory, Core I7 960 3.0 GHz. If such Morrowind Creatures is the problem, well I hope they may need to be removed. I saw the new guar and the netchs. Looks awesome but if it´s not guarantee stability better to remove them and use the old models.

Most people are not having stability problems.  If I were you, I would try a less-powerful video card, and a single monitor if you are using two of them.  Sucks, but that is the reality of new hardware and old games - it is not just an issue with Oblivion, but with many other old games as well.

I'm sure this will not be relevent to "jack.caceres" crashes but I've found that when I have this type of situation in morroblivion it's always caused by one or more mods that don't play nice with the other mods I use.  Sometimes a missing or corrupted texture in a totally unrelated mod will cause crashes .. sometimes its' a nif that is either missing or corrupted, sometimes a script in one mod steps on a script in another mod.

I've had to reinstall oblivion many times, I've reinstalled morroblivion several times, and always without fail when I remove all other mods (just use a fresh morroblivion install) the problem disappears. I then put my other mods back one at a time. When the crashes begin again I make a wild guess that the mod I most recently activated id causing the problem. Then it's just a matter of either fixing the offending mod in the CS or deactivating it permanently.

Load order is very importand!
I'm currently using about 60 mods (including morroblivion) in my game and have no stability issues,

Below is a partial list of my current load order

Thanks to you two for addressing about my "rants". Sorry, I got outraged. My apologies.

- I know GTX590 are two GTX580 that´s why I disabled one of them.

- I only use 1 monitor.

- I will follow "steph" guidelines in order to determine which is the offending mod from a clean install (although I use very few -20 mods-). I would hate to begin Morroblivion using a new character. I would like to still use the actual one.

- About the quest, it works correctly. What just I wanted to say is that when I kill all of the "bad people" I expected a new message telling me about this (like most Oblivion quest updates).

- The load order do not show the .esp files that comes from the 2.5 GB file and neither official DLC. It´s that correct? Their ordering is important?

- Just a final question: Are you using OBSE or OBMM? Do they cause inestability issues?

I start a new character about once a week, but I change things in my game a lot and my savegame becomes corrupt pretty often.

"The load order do not show the .esp files that comes from the 2.5 GB file and neither official DLC. It´s that correct? Their ordering is important?"

That's not my full mod list.

If the first two files in your mod list load order are:
Oblivion.esm
Morrowind_ob.esm
the rest may or may not need to be adjusted. My complete load order works for me and the mods I use. Your mod list is different so you'll need to figure out what works for you. Just remember, as mods are loaded, they can step on a previously loaded mod and can cause problems for you.

"- Just a final question: Are you using OBSE or OBMM? Do they cause inestability issues?"

I use both. OBMM to set load order and OBSE because most modders who fill up the game with scripts require it. Both programs are a bit buggy in my opinion. Most mods are buggy and unfinished, too.

- Just a final question: Are you using OBSE or OBMM? Do they cause inestability issues?

Wait a minute.  Are you NOT using OBSE?

That is probably the cause of your crashes.  The most current version of OBSE is REQUIRED for Morroblivion.

Gaaaah... doesn't anybody read the requirements?  You NEED all of these.

I use both =) Don´t worry, I will put in practice your recommendations this weekend and will close this ticket myself if I got to make it work as "steph" do XD

Well.... I got to do two things:

- Update the Unofficial Oblivion Patch to 3.4.1 (I did not know there was a upgrade patch, mine was 3.2.0 version).

- Put the Purge Cell Buffers on Cell Change

Initially I did a clean installation of Oblivion and Morrowind (no update and purge cells installed). Then I loaded my save game and it ran fine. Until it crashes again. Then I put the purge cells buffers on loading. It was good enough but still got several CTD crashes. So finally I put the purge cells buffer on cell change. Got to play at a steady pace, at least for most of the time. Now these CTD crashes happens mostly on night and on overdetailed wilderness places but around 85% of these crashes dissapeared. Note that I still use all my mods and did not need to remove any of them or the official DLCs and their respective unofficial patches. Not to mention I am playing from my actual savegame.

Thanks to both by helping me. I am closing this ticket as promised.
