A question about NPC conversation topics.

Submitted by Treadstone on

I'm really impressed with the work that's gone into this mod. I do have a little question, however.

Is it intentional that NPCs have far fewer conversation topics than in the original game?

I remember being able to talk to scouts and getting these really in-depth explanations of all of Vvarfandel's regions. I enjoy the lore of the series so I really miss all the exposition.

Are there any mods that restore the missing conversation topics, or am I better off playing classic Morrowind if I want all the dialogue and lore? Thanks!

As far as I know, conversation that does not reference Quest Stages or Variables is not missing. If it references Quest Stages, then it was definitely missing and had to be reconstructed line by line, mostly by the Queen of the Ashlands, but also by me. It depends on who you talk to, but I have had long conversations with some NPC's. As with everything, if you could be more specific. "Converstaion missing" does not give me much to go on. If you are going from memory of what you think was in Morrowind, then it has been my experience that people don't remember Morrowind as well as they think they do...

My apologies for not being more clear.

I reinstalled Morrowind to check my memory, and there did seem to be more available conversation topics in Morrowind as opposed to Morroblivion. Most of the NPCs in Seyda Neen had quite a bit to tell me about their trades, and had various rumors and pieces of advice for me. In Morroblivion, about half of the townsfolk don't say anything, and my only option is to Taunt them.

Elone the Scout at Arrile's Tradehouse told me about the various geographic regions of Vvardenfel when I talked to her in Morrowind, but in Morroblivion all she could talk about were five specific towns in Vvardenfel.

That's what I was referring to. Are those conversation topics missing, or re-assigned to other NPCs? Or is my game messed up somehow?

OK, thank you. In a year of people playing this mod, why hasn't anybody ever mentioned this before? This would take quite a bit of digging, to see what conversation topics are available in Morrowind, and why they are not availiable in Morroblivion, and what would need to be done to make them available. From what I understand, there is also quite a bit of missing dialog in Tel Fyr with Divayth Fyr's daughters, but having never played Morrowind I have no idea where to start, and Nobody has given me a list of dialog topics available in Morrowind so that I could track them down. I am not actively working on this mod, not since August/September of last year. I would, however, reconstruct the dialog in Tel Fyr if somebody would give me a list of topics by NPC so that I could go get them. I am, for the pesent and forseeable future, only here to offer what advice I can, and to assemble the Master when we have gathered enough material. Qwertyasdfgh, by the way, is the ONLY one currently submitting anything. So, if you would like to help out, this would be a good project to work on...

I actually forgot that Elone talked about regions as well as towns when I was playing, so it never stuck out to me. Now that it's mentioned, I do remember that from playing Morrowind. However, so far I haven't found this to be a systematic issue (well, at least going off of my imperfect memory of Morrowind). Most NPCs still have a large number of dialogue topics, about as many as they seem like they should from Morrowind, with the exception of some like "Morrowind lore" and "background" topic (which would be nice to add in, but IMO most of the "lore" in those topics weren't actually that interesting or were pretty generic, so their absence doesn't detract too much from my feeling of immersion). The savant characters also still are functional and still have a HUGE amount of lore-based topics. Basically, I wouldn't write off the mod just because Elone was missing some topics, you'll still get most of the lore conversations from the original.

Also, I don't know if you ever played Morrowind with the Less Generic NPCs project, but that adds A LOT of lore dialogue to Morrowind, so if you played that mod you may be inadvertently basing your evaluation of Morroblivion's lore dialogue on mods for Morrowind.

Actually, most of the conversation topics ARE there.  There are some that are missing, but a lot of them really are there.

However, you have to play the game a bit - you don't start out with all of the "latest rumors" and "little secret" topics and stuff.  You have to talk to a lot of NPCs here and there, and then once someone "adds" the topic to your list of things you can ask about, you'll be able to ask about that topic to a bunch of NPCs.  This is just how dialogue in Oblivion works -- very different form Morrowind's system.

For example, only certain conversations will give the the option to ask an NPC about the topic "Altmer".  But once you DO ask that topic the first time, it will show up on all the NPCs that have it as a topic (usually all of the Altmer).  By the time you've played Morroblivion for a while -- assuming you are the type who exhausts each NPC's dialogue options -- you will have a lot of topics in your list to ask people about.

Hey man I've been with Bethesada forever from Elder scrolls to travles to adventures and every single one has a different way of doing things like for example in Skyrim theres dual weilding, and holding a sword in one hand and fireball in the other but you can't do that in Morrowind it's pretty much the same thing like with what you said it's not that it's missing just different, in Oblivion you have to ask around before someone tells you what you want to know so if you just created a new character and getting frustrated because no one in South Wall will tell you were Cauis Cosades is just ask someone else or go somewhere else to ask (I found out where he was in Gnissis XD) but seriously just play the mod for what it is and I think it'll grow on you. Hope this helped :P

I agree Warrior,Beth does RPGs,so we just role play, and like in real life sometimes we don`t get all the answers on a plate,we have to do some leg work.

For example, there were no quest markers in morrowind, but oblivion had them etc.

From the digging I did, it looks like Elone at least doesn't talk about "geographic regions" because one of the conditions on the topic is membership in the nolore faction. Some other scouts (like Aengoth the Jeweler) are part of this faction, but she isn't. I might try to make a mod to fix it, but I don't know enough about the nolore faction to know what I could do without breaking the game.

That is interesting, because another thread insists that all conversation & quest woes are caused by membership in the NoLore Faction, and somebody did actually start working on removing ALL NPC's from that faction, but I wouldn't do it without thoroughly investigating the consequences. Still, I suspect that some NPC's have still been removed from this faction that shouldn't have been.
