Face and hand textures.

Submitted by OmNomNombies on

I'm having an issue where the face and hand textures are sometimes drastically different from the rest of the body.  The intensity of the difference varies, generally being the worst on Dark Elves and High Elves, of course.  It seems to be using two entirely different resolution textures for body and face/hands.  It's rather odd.

Note that this is a completely fresh install of Morrowind GOTY, Oblivion GOTY, Morroblivion and a few of the suggested mods from "[RELZ] Morroblivion Complete Installation".  Screenshots of an example, and my load order, below.

Looking at those it seems you not only have a texture problem but also a mesh problem, it looks like the mesh for those hands doesn't fit with the arms, correct me if I'm wrong but that's how it looks to me. I think those are man-hands on a female body.

There's certainly something very off here.  Which is so odd considering it's a completely fresh install, top to bottom, on a brand new HDD with nothing but TES installed, with absolutely no body or head replacers (as you can see).  Only Morrob and some of the suggested mods such as Darnified UI, Protocolled Dialogue, etc.  That's a new save as well.

I've no idea why it keeps doing that.

It's Morrowind_ob - ClothingReplacer

Clothes models in this mod are made for body replacer, judging by UV maps - for Roberts male and female.

It seems you're absolutely correct.  Deactivated Morrowind_ob - ClothingReplacer and rebuilt Bashed Patch.  Though there is still a noticable difference in coloration between the head/hands and body, it's no longer as extreme.  I had to use a different NPC for the screenshot, as that Dark Elf from above is now wearing a longsleeved blouse with ClothingReplace deactivated.

If this mod was built for Robert's replacers, would the issue be cleared up by using those mods in conjunction with ClothingReplacer?  That would only make sense, so I suppose I'll try that now.  I'd like to be able to use the clothing replacer, and I wouldn't mind using Robert's as well.

Keeping my fingers crossed.  Will report results here.  Thank you very much, qwerty.

I have installed Robert's male and female replacers, and the issue is still present.  The skin tones between head and body are quite mismatched, which I wouldn't really mind, as everyone remains clothed, but the hands are vividly out of place.  On Dark Elves they appear to be altogether detached from the rest of the body; I can see through a gap between wrist and hand.

Oddly enough, if I change my character to a female Dark Elf in an attempt to get the same effect, the hands on my character line up perfectly. Why is it so mismatched on my NPCs?

Anyone have any advice, or am I stuck deactivating Morrowind_ob - ClothingReplacer?

Are you using Robert's Male v5?  That one works for me for the males, better than v4.  http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/40532

I haven't found a solution for the females though... lots of neck seam issues.

Indeed, I'm using v5.  I've no issues with the male replacer (although the difference in tone from head to body on my male Redguard is pretty extreme).  Even the neck seams on the female NPCs isn't bothering me much.  It's those ungodly hands.  They're entirely too large for the wrists and unattached from the rest of the arm, to boot.  Anyone else having this issue?  It's happening with or without body replacers.

[EDIT: Actually, the hands on some of the male NPCs are slightly detatched as well, with a gap between hand and wrist.]

After a bit of testing, it appears that when using Morrob clothing replacer, vanilla hands are loaded for all female NPCs, even when using Robert's female replacer.  My PC's hands with the body replacer are perfect, whereas my female NPCs' hands are wonky no matter what I do, so long as the clothing replacer is active.

Can anyone provide me with a screenshot of a female, Dark Elf NPC as they are supposed to look when using Morrob clothing replacer and Robert's female?

In order to replicate the effect on your character you need to wear same clothing as problematic NPC. That's how clothes (and armor) actually work - they fully replace the corresponding body slot (UpperBody, in this case).

That would make sense, only I had thought that the femalehands.nif would override the clothing replacer and the correct hands would show up. I'm going to go for another (fourth) full reinstall and figure this out.  It's driving me up the wall.

Eh, don't get too excited. After reinstalling everything this time, I couldn't even run the application. "Oblivion.exe has stopped working", etc. This will be my sixth and final reinstall, as I've more or less completely lost all interest.

I've noticed that the morroblivion clothing replacer (and most other clothing/armor replacers) assumes that everyone uses the HGEC body. Some of the clothing also includes the hands in the nif, some uses the'femalehand.nif'. this causes the issue when the hands are not included in the nif.

If you use roberts female or any other body mod you'll have this issue. I use Roberts female, so I had to fix the replacer clothing I wanted to use and scrap the rest.

Not many people use Roberts female so I've never made anything available to the world. I always get requests to make clothing and armor for Exnem and HGEC bodies. I will not make anything for those.

thats caused by one or more of your other mods conflicting with morroblivion.  you should already know what to do when this happens ...

Even with HGEC you'll still get this issue. I have tried HGEC and it doesn't help the problem - still get bad neckseams and mismatched hands, even with various different EGT files that are supposed to fix neckseams.

The reason HGEC is so popular is that it comes with a lot of options, and there are a lot of other mods for HGEC, so it's one of those "Network effect" things I guess.  Robert is really good at male bodies, and his female is great too.

I wish we had a talented person who could make a better Morroblivion clothing replacer for Roberts Male v5 and Roberts female v13.

Wink wink.  Nudge nudge.  Steph???

This is more or less what I figured I'd end up having to do, unless a mod could be added to direct the clothing replacer to call up a hand.nif of your choosing.  I've never built a mod, so I've got some studying to do if I'm going to attempt any sort of long-term fix for this issue.  This Morroblivion project may be just the thing to get me to finally buckle down and learn the trade, so to speak.

Actually, it was a clean install and nothing to do with Morroblivion.  Windows decided it didn't like what I'd been doing to my HDD and thought to unleash a few registry errors for me to deal with.  Problem solved.

thermadorEven with HGEC you'll still get this issue.

You just saved me some time, thanks.  I'll be digging around to see what might be done.  In the meantime, thanks to everyone for your help, it's much appreciated.

[EDIT: Just a thought, but Robert's male and female replacers come with clothing/armor replacers to fit; could these not be used to replace the Morrowind clothing in the same way as Eloth's mod?  Hmm.]
