Sevenfour's Mods for Morroblivion

Submitted by sevenfour on
This is going to be my thread for posting mods I make for morroblivion. Morrowind is my favorite RPG. I'm a modeler, texture artist, construction set veteran, and so-so at scripting. I may delve into a variety of mod types in the future, but for now I'm focusing on visual improvement. Today, I made every Morrowind texture 2x the original size and added normal maps for all of them using photoshop batch actions. The quality is a little bit embellished by the anti-aliasing granted by resizing them to 1/2 of fullscreen, so the improvement is not quite as good as it looks. But anyway, the reason I'm doing this, and not creating entirely new textures as most texture pack creators do, is that I love the original art direction of morrowind and I do not want to see it change. I'm unsatisfied with the way most of the model/texture updates look so far (aside from the indoril armor, that is top notch), so decided to make my own texture enhancement for the originals. Some screenshots showcasing the normal maps on clothing, armor, clutter, statics, and terrain: [External image] [External image] [External image] [External image] [External image] You can download about 100 more (in a .rar) here: http://www.mediafire.com/?yqm2wy5o3ag I also made a map that looks somewhat similar to oblivion style maps: [External image] I'll upload the map tomorrow. The texture pack is going to take some more tweaking and I'll probably be done in about a week for your enjoyment.

Great Work sevenfour :) Keep in mind however that releasing these textures for Oblivion would be illegal (you can not release original morrowind assets for use in oblivion), so better be careful. TESnexus and planetelderscrolls will not host such mods for long and other hosts like mediafire or megaupload might also remove them (if bethesda complains to them regarding copyright). Also bethesda might sue you in court over this.

That's true. Maybe I'll have to make it private ;) And eh, in theory, the normal maps are not their property since Morrowind did not include normal maps. I'll just have to refrain from releasing the improved 'regular' textures. Although, perhaps it is legal to release it for Morrowind? There are a lot of mods that just "adjust" textures from m for m or from ob for ob.

excellent work man...also even though i admire this truely i must say irather have your skills on fixing armours and clothing on MO :) it seems a texture pack is somewhat easier to make but the bug list is there for a reason

@sevenfour: Yea you could release the texture pack for morrowind, that would be totally legal (its legal to release modified morrowind assets if they are intended for morrowind). The converter will automatically copy the textures over into morroblivion. You know its funny how the mod-laws work ... releasing the same thing is legal if you say its for morrowind and illegal if you say its for oblivion :p @daemonnnn: I think that hi-res textures are as much important. Morroblivion looks seriously ugly with the original low res textures and nearly all the replacements till yet are quite different from the original. Besides, he is doing the clothing textures as well ... which will help with the new cloth meshes.

@Hashmi1: I agree with you but i must say given his skills i rather have him use them to the fullest of his extent, though undoubtedly the texture packs will be lovely

... well if you put it that way ... I am with you :p Sevenfour, if you can work on modeling creatures first, then it would be so much better. Because we already have 'something' working for the textures ... current texture replacements (like visual pack 3 or darknut's packs) might not be as good as yours but something is better than nothing ... and we have nearly 'nothing' in the creatures department :d If you dont want to do creatures then do the clothes. As you would have noticed ... although clothes convert they have several issues, 1) First of all they make the body feel too thin compared to the heads in oblivion. Just look at the woman in the screen you posted, look around the shoulder area ... the body seems unnaturally thin compared to the head. 2) Secondly, as you must have noticed ... most shirts, pants, skirts are missing limbs. The solution is to retex oblivion robe\shirt\skirt\pant meshes to look like morrowind clothes. You can possibly make use of the textures you have already made. Anyways this is just a suggestion, if you want to continue with the textures then its fine :)

I despise working with animated NIFs which is why I'm not doing creatures or armor. The clothes retexturing is a possibility, but I'd have to start from scratch. The UV mapping of the clothing in oblivion is different. I AM going to rexture the already re-modeled stuff to feel more naturally morrowind-like. Part of the problem is that they didn't bake ambient occlusion, and the textures are just too flat/details are too fine. The other thing I plan to work on is a morag tong questline. The map is ready to be downloaded. I'll upload to TESNexus at some point, but their servers fail and keep timing out on me at the moment, so for now.. http://www.mediafire.com/?nntyzjdknnm

When you get all the textures done you really need to let me know, I kinda screwed myne up with some mod I got off Nexus, all the bricks look like whit noise static, But the work that your doing I dont really see how it would be "Illegal" if after all it is just a "Mod" and they cant get too mad because "they" did give us the construction set to do it with and there not loosing any cash, there more along the lines of making cause I bought morrowind just for the mod

@PayneXIII: It will be illegal because the mod will contain textures from morrowind which are intended for adding to oblivion. Its illegal because someone who has not payed for morrowind can get nearly all morrowind's textures for free. For a rule of thumb, it is always illegal to port content from one game to another, especially if the end user does not need to own both games to make use of it. In bethesda's case they have made it illegal to port content even if you own both games (and hence the illegality of morroblivion). But thats another issue altogether.

that's why we're struggling to make this as hand made as possible..so we don't have to use any more MW resources therefor making it 100% drug free lol

Yeah, fortunately since I created the normal maps I can release those for oblivion, and that's where 80% of the visual improvement is found.

Shhh, No ones Gotta know HaHa But yeah I can see where your commin from but theres always a loophole a risky one but theres still one there HaHa, But the textures I see in the screen shots, are we gonna be allowed to have them?

@sevenfour: You can release the textures for morrowind and the normal maps for oblivion. The ESPconverter will automatically transform your textures for use in morroblivion and people can then install the seperate normal maps to have the complete thing working. @PayneXIII: Its never good for a modder to risk his ethical image. Sometime or another you are gonna need the official forums and the nexus ... and it won't help being an outlaw :p Besides, as daemon implied, we have a long term goal of making morroblivion as less objectionable to bethesda as possible by minimising the use of morrowind assets ... so as to can earn back the acceptance of the wider modding community and of the official forums.

Yeah man I know what you mean the last thing any of us would want is a law suit for just messing with stuff but I gotta say this is by far the most kick ace mod Ive seen for Oblivion but what I seen in that post I liked most was this "You can release the textures for morrowind and the normal maps for oblivion" Thats what I like seeing HaHa cause my textures kindly got screwed up but I suppose I got to wait it out and graphical issues dont bother me that bad, its all about the game play

@PayneXIII: If there is a problem with your textures then reconvert morroblivion. ( remember to first delete the all the old textures in data\textures\ )

Ive been thinking about doing that but I really dont want to screw something up in the process so I can kinda do without unless I can find me a nice texture mod on Nexus or something latter on in time so I really wont worry about it, OH and on the map that seven made you should try to resize it to fit Morroblivion Map Markers Mod if its not too much to ask for
Karma: 0 (0 votes)

Err, it fits for me. Can you upload a screenshot of the places it doesn't line up? That would help me.

Yeah thats what mines doing exactly

Kia Ora Whats happening is to do with the world space size and thw dds image size. you may need to make an esp the same as I did with the colth maps. In CS you set the world space size to suit the map the use the 4 setting below to stretch/shrink the map till the icons land where they should be,.. sorry it's not fun but the only other way would be to size the map to the same size as the blue one created by the converter

Eh it couldnt be too hard, I just wouldnt want to mess my stuff up and cause a serious problem, im always bad for that HaHa [Lack of XP in it] But im willing to try to do it
Karma: 0 (0 votes)

Kia Ora Make a copy off all da5ta so you can go back again
Karma: 0 (0 votes)

HaHa not a bad idea thanks for the tip
