Is it worth it?

Submitted by LemonyLime on

This seems like a brilliant mod, as I absolutely love Morrowind... in fact, I still play and mod Morrowind all the time, and haven't touched Oblivion or Skyrim in ages. The thing about this mod that has me so interested is that I can play it and Oblivion at the same time, which would give me some incentive to actually play Oblivion again. The only problem is that I don't have the expansions for Oblivion, and would have to pay $20 for the full version on steam. I wouldn't mind owning it on steam, because I wouldn't have to use the CD anymore, and I've never played the expansions (though I honestly don't find them very interesting) but that's really not enough of a reason to rebuy the game for me... so tell me, is Morroblivion worth it? Am I getting my hopes up too high, considering it is just a mod? And most importantly, (well, to me anyway, considering what I've gone through with mods in the past) will I have to deal with endless technical issues that will frustrate me, and make me uninstall the game and never want to look at it again? I would typically expect that from a mod of this scale, especially considering that it for some reason requires both Morrowind and Oblivion to play, which is... different. I did my research once before, and decided it wasn't worth it, but I don't really remember why now, so I'm just being lazy and asking about it instead this time. lol

If TL,DR: Is this mod worth paying $20 for the full version of Oblivion, just to play the mod, and how easy is it to install?

If you like playing the original Morrowind, and don`t mind it`s bad combat routine, then maybe in your case the answer might be no as Morrowind is a great game in it`s own engine.

But if on the other hand you like the better combat etc,and the Oblivion engine, then yes it is worth it.

I guess it`s a matter of taste.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking... it's a tough call then.

I can't get the steam version of Morrowind to actually work, although I do own it. Will I have trouble with it, or do I not need to actually run the morrowind client, since it runs in Oblivion?

The morroblivion installer looks for a morrowind install, but I don`t think that the game has to be actually working.

I think that as long as you have morrowind.exe and the tribunal & bloodmoon addons installed you should be able to install it.

And of course you need an oblivion install.

The master installer asks you to browse to the morrowind & oblivion directories.

But you will need the Shivering Isles addon too because it was used when making morroblivion.

It is easy to install if you use thermadors complete install.

But first you have to install the master with the installer.

Morrowind is only needed for legal reasons,it does not have to be running or ever been run.

morroblivion runs in oblivion just like all mods,it is just a bigger one.:)

If you still play Morrowind, then I'd say no, it isn't worth it. Morrowind is better looking, it has better mods and a better magic system, and at this point is quite stable and bug-free.

Morroblivion, on the other hand, can be a bit ugly, is rough around the edges and not all features work perfectly. Because the items don't convert perfectly, many of them are either strangely balanced or just plain broken, meaning a good deal of your loot is unusable. Levitation was so broken, difficult to use and difficult to find, I think I used it maybe twice, and just TLCed when I absolutely had to. Morroblivion is filled with bugs, many in the main quest, making progression impossible without skipping quests with console commands or getting into the CS and fixing it yourself. Some "small" graphical things really bothered me, like Vivec's face is majorly messed up because it has a misaligned texture that places his eyes on his forehead and his mouth on his nose. A lot of the armor is set to the wrong body slots, so you'll have full body suits that give you two pairs of legs or helms that don't replace the head model, so your head will be clipping through a helm meant to obsure it. (Again, meaning a lot of the clothing you find is unwearable.) The chitin armor is hideous, and the masked helm is rotated 90 degrees incorrectly, making some NPCs (and your PC, if you try to wear it) look like the exorcist.

Now, don't get me wrong, I actually loved Morroblivion, enough to mod and fix all of these things for myself, even if it was frustrating and tedious and time-consuming, because it gave me a chance to play my beloved Nerevarine with a better character model, pose mods, and a combat system I enjoyed. I am deeply grateful to the people that have sunk so much time into this mod because it has given me something irreplacable. That said, you have to be really dedicated to playing it and willing to overlook some things if you give it a try. Directly after finishing it, I fired up Morrowind and made a mage, and, yeah...Morrowind is still better.

Edit: Oh, I will add that the coolest thing about Morroblivion is that it felt, for me, like I went from playing Morrowind to actually stepping inside of it. It's hard to explain. Something about the better resolution, and camera, and detail... Judging by screenshots, modded Morrowind is the prettier game, but I had never felt like I'd walked through Balmora until I played Morroblivion. The novelty of that alone is worth something.

Don't forget that the real Morrowind has the huge advantage of Tamriel Rebuilt. Which imo has better quests than the real Morrowind it self.

I think, just try it out. Wouldn't hurt IMO and I love morroblivion, even if it isn't as complete as the original. It did convince me to also go to Cyrodiil and do the quests there. You have a choice between two provinces and two games with the same character and that's great. :) But please bear in mind, I had to turn down my graphics settings a lot so Vvardenfell doesn't lag while in Cyrodiil, I can see for miles without any penalty for performance. I love the original game and its combat system - and yes you can't beat the tons of mods like TR and Mournhold expanded and no conversion to another engine would beat the original experience. Just let it be an extension to your Morrowind experience and not a replacement and you will enjoy Morroblivion to the fullest. :)

Because Morrowind and some new mods like the Morrowind Overhaul 3 are crashing very oft on my Win 8 (its really not playable...), Im playing this here. And I have to say: its really awesome. Here and there are some bugs... maybe you should wait for the next version. Im sure its getting better and better.

You can buy oblivion for 10-15$. On Amazon I saw it for 15$ - Oblivion + Addons. On Ebay Im sure you can buy it for <10$. Oblivion was really boring, the full npc/monster level scaling system destroyed the game. It was so not challenging... well the game was made for console players. But with Morroblivion the game is again challenging, I like this.

Yup, there places where you can afford the game for even less then 20$.

I own morrowind goty, and oblivion. I rather play morroblivion, then morrowind. Its all a personal preference: what is the most likeable for you.

The OB combat mechanics is the push-over for me. By my own experiences with morroblivion, having the OB combat mechanics integrated is EPIC gameplay. Seeming that you own oblivion, and have played it, the combat is even better in morroblivion. But thats just my conclusion, on basis of personal experiences with this game. I think the value of epic combat, does make morroblivion better then morrowind. Action-gameplay does plays a significant roll for me. It makes it all better!

I think you wont regret it.

PS: V55 is very playable, it does take a small time to optimize it: as in placing extra esp's in your data folder which contains bug fixes or optimizing fixes.

Well, I've got the game up and running, and everything seems to be working fine thus far, other than taxing my graphics card quite a bit more than vanilla Oblivion. Can't play on max graphics anymore. :(

Literally the first thing I did was steal the limeware platter, and get murdered by the guards. Wish I had a little warning on that one. haha

If you are going to steal, first rule is "don`t get caught"...HA!HA!.:)

Or join the theaves guild, they protect you.

Lol, well in Morrowind, you could steal whatever you want during the tutorial, and they wouldn't do anything. You can even easily jump through one of the walls, to go outside and steal anything in the world without penalty.

But you can`t sell stolen stuff in Morrowind.?

Do mean jump through the wall in morroblivion or in the original game.?

I prefer the morroblivion way though,as it seems stupid to me if a prisoner fresh off the boat is allowed to steal anything.?

When you originally first hop off the boat in Morrowind, if you steal stuff in the census office infront of that guy who helps you create your character they flip out and warn you that stealing stuff will get you arrested. They remove the stolen item from you, and you don't get a bounty or anything.

It makes sense in a gaming way, because that part is more of a tutorial stage, and if someone is playing Morrowind their first time and accidentallly stole something and got thrown in jail after creating their character, well it might make them ragequit I guess, or might be considered unfair.

In a realism sense, you're a prisoner, who knows what the hell you were in jail for, and if you're low enough to start stealing right before they free you, and ontop of that, right infront of a damn guard, well you deserve to rot in jail.

In the original Morrowind, if you steal something, and then drop it, it's no longer marked as belonging to anyone, so if you steal something during the tutorial, and drop it, before they can take it away from you, you can pick it back up and keep it. I suppose this is an exploit though, honestly.

I was just so used to that, that I immediately tried to do it when I started Morroblivion. lol
