Web Page Layout

Submitted by SquallyDaBeanz on

Hello all! I'm very new to this website, but have been tracking it for some months now. The work you guys are doing is outstanding, but there is one issue. I have found it very hard to keep track of the progress being made on the project, and even wonder some times if it is dead due to a lack of official news and updates. What I think it comes down to is the entire website layout. I know it would be very counter productive to take the time to redesign the whole web page, but I think a lot more people would be willing to help and track this project if it didn't look like a jumble of scattered forums on the side links. A professional front page with screen shots and huge highlighted news of upcoming features and updates would really get people interested in the hard work going on. More fans would respond and help, and overall boost the moral of the people working on the project who probably go unnoticed until the final product. Everyone working here should know what the fans think and know that they are still interested, and the best way to get more peoples attention is eye candy and constant updates. I'm sorry if it feels like I just walked in here and told you guys how to do your project, but it is just a suggestion. Keep up the hard work guys, you have no idea how much this means to a lot of us. Thank you!

Do you have any examples of sites that have the sort of things that you describe?

If you find the menus too confusing, you can disable some or all of them by editing your profile.  The layout is pretty simple though.  The menus on the left are for navigating different categories of content.  The menus on the right are for following individual active threads.

Regarding front page content, the problem is getting someone to write content for the front page, take screenshots etc.  Any moderator can promote a forum topic to the front page, but no one bothers.

What do you think I should do to the front page Thermador?  I could always write an article for it.  I'm no good at screenshots though.  And I'm kind of afraid of messing the front page up to be honest.

It is easy to navigate, I was just suggesting to make it be more eye catching. If there were like immediate pictures, links to videos, and constant news updates on features to keep people informed and interested, it would help get support I think. Again, it's just a suggestion, and is probably more work that it's worth.

I think you mean like dark creations and it's double home page thing. Basically when you go to dark creations you see a bunch of pictures of their mods, however the difference is dark creations only has pictures of skyrim (because they haven't done to much yet). We can put up picture of things that will actually catch peoples eye. anyway after you look though the pictures you can go to the real home page of the site or click one of the picture you like and go to the page where it is being discussed.

Example:

You see a cool picture of skywind mod... let's say "ABC" you click the picture and then you then your on the forum page where mod "ABC" is released at.

I think that that would keep people coming back and get us more modders. Look at dark creation The only things I seen them make (as in massive mods not other things) are either unimpressive or converted from someone else. Yet they're are more famous for massive mods then andoran or enderal(not sure if that's the name) . Of course it would have to update constantly to keep people coming, so someone would have to keep taking pictures to keep it updated. But anyway I think that would be a good system to interest other modders. I'm not sure how hard it is to make though.

The front page on this site is just a list of posts, sorted by date.  The top post, with the image, is a sticky so it is at the top.

If a mod or admin wants to add something to the front page, all they have to do is open the "Publishing Options" expanding section and check the box "Promoted to the front page".

You can do this with new content, or when editing old content.  This applies when they are making a new forum thread, posting a screenshot to the gallery, or even creating a new bug report.  You can add youtube videos or images or whatever.  If you're having problems getting a video or something to work, PM me, or switch the Input Format to Full HTML and see if that works.

The list on the front page is automatically sorted by date so that new stuff shows up at the top.  If there is more than one sticky, those are also sorted by date.

I normally just edit the first post that is stickied, since it is easier than creating something new.

Mods and admins can also create a special content type called a "news post" that just shows up on the front page, and doesn't have to be in a forum or anything.  That is the content type of the three posts currently on the front page.

Hi everyone! I am new here too, the progress of everything here in the last few months is absolutely amazing! I have a few recommendations for the sites forums which might or might not help. I agree with SquallyDaBeanz in that maybe a few pictures would be beneficial for the front page of the site, the only other thing I would recommend is maybe making forums for each part of development (Example - One for the development of new weapon models/meshes/textures, another for new creature models/meshes/textures, etc.), especially since there are a whole lot of new people here with Gopher's promotion of the site, it would help everyone keep track of progress of certain things and make it easier to communicate about certain topics. Other than that I really like the format of the Morroblivion site, I hope I don't sound pushy these are only suggestions on my part. Anyway, I love the work you guys have done and I cant wait to see what comes up next!!
