ok this is the 3rd time Ive written this, I'm not used to this type of forum. ok, eloth gave me the go ahead to redesign some elements of the cliff racer. I'm posting up the dev of this creature as it needs to be done right. Changes so far (up for change/discussion) longer neck (may help if rigged to dragon) LEGS. Clasp cliff rocks, rather silly without them. Can make them smaller. removal of lower guidance fin. fin material/wings now double as solar sails. eyes point downwards, change head more like hawk (for prey) Still playing with musculature This is an alpha version of the clay, still early days:

Wow, that already looks quite good. I would even be fine with the model in my game, despite how early of a model it is. Well, as long as it had textures of course :)
The devil incarnate. Outstanding!
I think the model looks great as is. Of course, if you wanted to do more stuff to it, go ahead! I didn't even realize the old one had no legs . . . I guess they were airborne 24/7 in Morrowind and never rested.
looking awesome, great piece of work :) hope we can find a rigger/animator for it :)
That model is made out of pure win.
love but a smal fin on its belly wil look beter and smaler legs so it look more like a airborn critter
hope u get it good working it is the mob that every 1 knows from morrowind
why should it have a small fin on its belly, its totally impractical for a bird to land :P
I can hear a swarm of them desending on my unsuspecting character now.
i think we can try to use the dragon rig and anims on this one, hopefully it will look right with some adjustments :)
baby dragon mods for Skyrim, might be something useful for you in the way they did it.
The model is great but I think the legs could be improved... Couldn't you make them more more widely spaced like the legs of a pteranodon?
Wow, that looks great! I can't wait till I look up and see like 10 of them.
nice !
It's important to have good models for this because, unfortunately, it's the thing we'll see the more often^^.
If a 3d artist could make a good nest model to drop around the landscape it could be great ; )
ok im making the legs smaller, but spreading them out more.
But i prefer the design of the archeoptryx to the pteradactyl.
Some colour and skin detail included here too.
wow, simply amazing :) im lost for words :)
i really like that design you have some real talent sir, im not sure about feathers though, maybe scales but i always thought of them as leathery
That's beautiful. Should be a loadscreen ;)

Agreed
ok, I'm going to go for a thin leathery skin. Any "spikes" on the original creature I'll add as "display scales, but thin like feathers. How about that? they'd be sparse.
Also, does anyone have a skyrim dragon model I can use in FBX or OBJ format? Its clear the cliff racer will be modelled to it, and I just want to make it easier to rig the low poly when the time comes, and how far off the joints/limbs are.
maybe some feathers around the neck or something?
skyrim dragon model in .fbx format:

They apparently had a plume in morrowind, so at least some feathers would be appropriate.
Ok this is the final zbrush sculpt, meaning if all is well, i bake done to a 10k model and make diffuse/spec/normal.
Colours on the feather ploom and their size are changeable still.
WOOOW! OUTSTANDING!!!!!
Can I suggest adding a bit more detail to the tip of the tail? Seeing that the cliff racer uses it as a weapon, I think it needs some 'man, I don't want to get hit by THAT' feel to it.
Otherwise, it's looking absolutely amazing!
Hehe I like it, maybe in the future you can make a recolored version for a Diseased Cliff Racer, and a Blighted Cliff Racer.
Mehh, I was always quite surprised about the game letting me know if a beast is diseased. Maybe if it is a blight disease, there will be some noticeable marks, but you should not be able to tell a regular diseased beast from a healthy one if you are an outlander :)
more like a scorpion tail on the end then?
also, I can create a few variations of textures for diseased ones.
This looks very nice. Once again, great job :)
So, how hard would it be to get that rigged to... say a dragon skeleton and ingame?
I was thinking, if you make the spike out of bare bone with a sharp transition to skin with a few feathers around, it would be really sweet.
Not that I mind the current version, I'd be happy to see it as it is even now.
I overlayed the dragon skeleton to the model during dev, it was quite similar.
I you cant get custom animations/rigs, it wont be too much of a job to morph it to the dragon skeleton.
Only downside is, it'll look even more like a mini GoT dragon.
as long it dont braeth fire on me i dont mind
maby that whit a chest fin it looks more like a clif racer and not a dragon it probely the legs that make me think dragon but its stil very nice creatures always intrest me
also it remind me of this mod chek out the song on it its very funny

Honestly, it looks perfect as is. Great work man.
Everybody knows dragons are just overgrown cliffracers!
Ok i'm not opposed to some minor colour changes, I was playing around with mudbox to create the textures, will use that more from now on.
Its a lot less complex than 10k offered before.
Not done LOD yet.
Added corpus version.
Some translucency for fins.
No idea what ingame will look like, thats up to eloth!
That looks perfect! Keep up the great work man. I'm sure it'll look great in game. Ok, here's a modeling newb question: What's roughly average number of triangles for npcs and creatures? The reason I ask is because yours says 6500 and I'm just curious as to if that's high, low, or average.
for a modern game, its quit low, but more tris simply weren't needed here.
Amazing! Prefect number of tris. Maybe we can get a "far" model going as well and even the possibility of using a bird mesh for really far away effects. Phitt a modler has already done a bird mesh version, so we might be able to skin it with a simplified texture of our own now :)
Have these predator of the air looming at various distances around the skies.
plumes as alchemy ingredient! well why not, its 1;30am and i'm bored.
Just stopping in to say how absolutely awesome this is. :)
Man, it's so cool to see a pro work. I've been loving getting on and seeing the Cliff Racer / Vivec progress by you and Jk!
Morroblivion has always had a dedicated community that's pooled together to do awesome stuff, and so it's really exciting to see some pro interest now. :D

'nuff said.
Watching pro at work is like magic. I don't care if cliffracers will use dragon's animations, just want to behold them in game with my own eyes!
Sins there are no dragons supposed to be in Morrowind we can always replace dragon animations for new Cliffracer animations.
For those that missed it here something to get in the mood, cliffracer flying as a bird.

Just wow, really awesome.
Will you be doing the guar, scrib, and kwama and other such creatures as well?

I was wondering exactly the same =P
I saw a zbrush model of Kwana foreger already, or was that not this team?
A lot of the morrowind creatures need redesigning, they were too unbelievable.
