Can't walk up stairs

Submitted by TheReaper1221 on

I don't know how many other people have noticed this, but for some staircases, you have to jump up each individual step in order to go up. It isn't gamebreaking, but be annoying. Every staircase in Ald'ruhn that i have tried to walk up has required me to jump.

Yeah, we've all noticed.  Just haven't gotten around to it yet.  Anyway, thanks for posting it in the bugtracker.

Lots of the time you couldn't walk up stairs in the vanilla Skyrim haha, so I guess the steps will need to be the exact right size for the walking/running animation.

Relevant Morroblivion bug - I "fixed" it by adding extra steps.

Well that fixes it, but doesn't it look a little odd? I heard someone in chat say that you can change the collision in the stairs, couldn't that be done?

Good idea!

Someone who's really good with meshes would have to remove collision from the segments of the mesh what are the 'sharp edges' of the stairs (the steps) and then create a flat plane that HAS collision that is basically just a ramp.

So the player/NPC's feet would not collide with the steps when they walked up the stairs.  Instead, they would be walking up the ramp that is just underneath the steps.

Hey, found a new way to fix these collision. I wanted to try to add a flat plane underneath but unfortunately blender hates me :P So yeah, apparently there is another way to do that... Found it on a french forum so I'll do my best to traduct ;)

  • You'll need to delete collision of all the existing "steps" (with an NCO extradata I think)
  • Place a nitrishape without texture/material on the part which has to be solid
  • Include this nitrishape in a "RootCollisionNode" ninode whit a flag set to 3
  • Declare this ninode as a child of the root ninode

This ninode can be found under Block/insert/Bethesda/RootCollisionNode. If it works (didn't try) I think it'll be better than the invisible plane, your feet won't go through the steps

I discovered Nifskope today so I didn't get the whole thing either :P If you want to see the original thread in french, here you go. If someone is good enough with Nifkope, great. Otherwise maybe I could pm her to get a tutorial or something...

Hmmm, Machine was actually working on this, but ended up super busy. He mentioned some steps cannot be fixed(the interiors in Balmora, and those steep ramps in Vivec) due to the gap. Here is one of the steps he fixed to get an idea of what needs to be done. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3eKYijLPljYdzhpdklZSjNCNFE/edit

Goes into Data\meshes\Morrowind\architecture\docks

Try walking up the steps in Seyda Neen that leads to Arrille's trade house.

Oh thank you, I'll look how he did it when I have a bit of time. And maybe I'll pm him if I have any problems.

I can't for the life of me tell what he has done with this stair... I think I'm going to pm him, just to know what soft did he use.

Ok, Machine made the collision meshes straight ramps for some fixed stairs and ramps.

However he also discovered that some of the angles of stair cases are simple too steep for the Skyrim engine to walk up. Its like trying to go up the mountain slopes...come on you know you've tried it, zig zagging and jumping :-P

Its a bit of a head scratcher to how to solve this one :( Of course we can physically change the slope of the stairs by making them longer, but this will be a major as we actually have to make room from them in the world. Think about the interiors where there is hardly any room for extra stairs.

Open to suggestions?

Hm, when I last went over a lot of the steps and ramps, only two of them struck me as "0unfixable". The steps in most Balmora houses, and that really steep ramp in the Vivec hall of justice. Vivec is being re-done, and no idea about the Balmora house.

ahem yes i can see how that can get annoying but happens to me sometimes in diffrent games tho

some stairs you end up falling through too, the stairs in Arrilles trade house is an example

^ that was already fixed, you didn't download the updated assets.

Mehh

is that inside Arilles tradehouse?

Yup, it was already fixed there. The update we posted should contain a mesh that fixes those stairs.
