Slavery in Skywind

Submitted by TonyB500 on

I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not, but from what I've found on this site so far, when it comes to Skywind there's one thing that hasn't really been discussed very much; Slavery. In fact, slavery wasn't even addressed enough in Morrowind to begin with, which has always irritated me.

One thing that really bugged me was that there wasn't a key for every area with slaves. What also bugged me was how many people thought it was impossible to free the slaves in areas without slave keys (such as Sadrith Mora), and they were wrong because you can just use a control humanoid spell to leads them to an area with a key and they can be freed. So this is what I propose; create slave keys for every area with slaves so there's not such a big hassle in freeing every slave (which was difficult but can be done). I also think that there should be more behind the Twin Lamps faction. I know there's a couple of mods at there that elaborate more on the Twin Lamps.

Another thing that I think should be made possible in Skyrim is the abolition of slavery. When you look at the timeline for the Elder Scrolls. you'll see that Oblivion only takes place 6 years after Morrowind, and slavery was abolished before the events of Oblivion. So naturally, having a questline to end slavery is something that would not only make Skywind more interesting, but it would also be the more lore-friendly option.

Interesting, but I don't know how this makes it "more lore-friendly". The fact is that slavery was never abolished during the gameplay of Morrowind. We don't know for certain when it was abolished, just like we don't know for certain when the Nerevarine or Vivec disappeared. Those things only happened in between gameplay events. Sprucing up the Twin Lamps might be a good idea though.

Edit: You know what might be cool, if you add more missions to the twin lamps that ultimately lead up to events where you petition to the Emperor to abolish slavery. The outcome of the abolishment wont happen during gameplay, but one can assume that they had a part in its outcome.

The emperor doesn't abolish slavery in Morrowind. Slavery is abolished everywhere except Morrowind, and ultimately King Helseth is the one who abolishes slavery in Morrowind. House Indoril and House Dres eventually enter a bit of a civil war because of this against Helseth, but that's after he declares that slavery is abolished. So techinically speaking, since Houses Indoril and Dres aren't part of Vvardenfell (only Redoran, Telvanni, and Hlaalu have influence on Vvardenfell), a questline (preferably a Twin Lamps questline) where Helseth declares slavery abolished would actually be more lore-friendly than if it wasn't included in the game (Morrowind came out before Oblivion, so when the game was made I don't believe the thought of slavery being abolished was thought of lore-wise, so now that we DO know what happens lore-wise a questline where Helseth abolishes slavery would make more sense).

Wow, I did not think No would get that many votes. There's nothing wrong with abolishing slavery in Morrowind in Skywind. Saying it shouldn't be included just because it wasn't in the original game is a ridiculous reason in my opinion considering that Skywind will already be featuring a lot of things that weren't in the original game.

Ok, thanks for the lore. Here is an article from UESP:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Slavery

From this article I get the impression that slavery didn't come into full effect with House Indoril or House Redoran until after the war. You could have it so that you petition to Helseth (or just generally help him come to an agreement) on abolishment. This could have its effects happen immediately in House Hlaalu. But House Redoran should then position itself in an opposite manner. House Telvanni could position its stance in the middle ground, they generally don't care for politics anyway. And even after the war, slavery still existed in remote areas.

Basically I saying that you could spruce up the Twin Lamps and side with Helseth and the abolishment of slavery, making an official stance in the law. However, its effects should not be immediate all over Morrowind. It wouldn't make sense to make such a jump in such a small timeframe. What do you think? I'd also like to hear from others too.

I'm not going to vote just yet. I want want to hear from others. I understand that other stuff is also being added to Skywind that wasn't in Morrowind, but at the same time we want to keep it quite traditional, especially from a lore stance. This needs to be debated with logical arguments. If we were to include some elements to slavery (that is elements geared to both abolitionists and conservatives) how far should it go? People, express your opinions!

I would think this sort of thing should be optional, although, thinking about it, quests in general are kind of optional in nature aren't they?  The topic on the lore forum is obviously about slavery in the fourth era, but it still has quite a bit of discussion about abolition in general.

I think, this for me is one more challenger, to complete in game, really is one suggestion of quest and for me this help the history of the game how have the end of Slavery, its one part of history, for me don't have nothing to lose.I think one time the quests is ends in mod, maybe, this help the game, and the mod in one long quest, for the player, clear.Remember this is my opinion.

Slavery was abolished later in the third era by King Helseth

As usual, anything that doesn't make it in the core skywind, if you want to see it, make an optional mod :)

He's foreign, what do you propose we do exactly?

It shouldn't be in the main Skyrim mod. You could put it out as a separate, optional add on though.

Well, it could be so Helseth does say he will abolish slavery, and House Hlaalu and House Redoran agree to abolish it, but House Telvanni will take quite a bit of convincing, thus not ending it completely just yet, and not affecting mainland Morrowind outside Mournhold. Either way, a questline where you can free every slave on Vvardenfell would be a great idea in my opinion, especially if it elaborates more on the Twin Lamps, cause I think Bethesda could've done so much more with that faction.

It sounds like a nice idea Tony, but I think that's outside the scope of this project.  We're not really in the business of adding new quests, we already have enough to do just to get the vanilla game working in Skyrim.  But like others have said, you can always make your own separate plug-in for Skywind that addresses the slavery issue.

I agree, I voted 'no', but if someone were to make such a plugin, I would probably play it as I felt the Twin Lamps should have been a larger quest line in Morrowind.

Heres an idea. with the new follower AI ((buggy as it is)) could it be possible to have the player character buy a slave? I mean some peoples charactor types might be perfectly fine with slavery. not everybody plays the altruistic hero.
