Question About Mod Conversion

Submitted by Outlander on

Hello everyone!

I just registered to say how much i admire your work and its really great to see how much progress you are making, especially with the creatures that you're creating recently. It's really mindblowing stuff!

The reason i post is that i'd like to know if mod conversion is possible yet or if there are plans to implement it further down the way? i am specifically speaking about mods that add landscape to Morrowind, like Tamriel Rebuilt or the other province mods.

Of course i know that a simple full conversion would be impossible, seeing how you have to recreate all NPCs and monsters from scratch, as well as redoing all scripting, dialogue and so on...

I know however that for Morroblivion someone at least imported all the landmass from TR and posted a video of it on youtube. Is there a way yet to do this for Skywind, or did someone try it out?

Sorry if this has already been brought up somewhere, but i couldn't find a thread about this.

Two problems, 1) the Morrowind convertor crashes when converting mods that size to Oblivion along with the expansions, 2) Tamriel Rebuilt won't give us permission. The video I saw of tamriel rebuilt in Morroblivion only had 1 map so that's not nearly all of it

It's not so much of a permission issue as it is said on their website that we can try to convert TR to Oblivion or Skyrim but that we can expect no help from them when doing so.

It's more of a technical issue and without a new converter, it won't be possible. Plus, TR is still in beta so I think it's worth waiting until we have a final version before I really try to convert it again.

Their site already says it's fine for us to convert it, but they will give us 0 help.

The converter can convert over TR, but it has issues with heightmaps, and when you convert over a mod with the converter, some of the formids go a little nuts. For example, when Happychappy tried to convert over Stone Wood pass mod, the mod converted over, but the form ids overlapped, and the converter started using Azura coast rock form ids, which replaced the Azura coast rocks.

In the future when/if we get a better converter, than yeah, we'll have TR in Skywind, but keep in mind, TR is still WIP it self.

Why would we need permission? Is it copyrighted? This isn't the nexus. Nobody is going to ban our IPs if we use their assets. Correct me if it is copyrighted though.

Maybe we don't need permission but it's morally wrong to rip content that others have spent +10,000's of hours to make and then use it to progress our own personal greeds. It's like if you spent half of your life building a boat then The day before it reaches completion someone else steals it from you and takes credit... nice. Why don't we just convert every single 3d model from every beta indie game we can find. They can't ban us from our own site. In fact why don't we don't just rip every 3d model and texture from every free game we can find  then make a skyrim mod out of it and then we charge people to play ($60 to download it and then an extra $15 monthly). Yep seems like a good idea to me. I mean where does it say that they are the sole owners of the content and that they can ban us from Morroblivion.com

I'm just saying if he wants to convert a Morrowind mod, just go for it.

Jesus, talk about an overreaction. No one's suggesting anything remotely like that, calm down.

I know right.. I've never seen overreaction like that >_>

It was pretty extreme. I've heard worse in RL but that's another story for another day.

I don't see overreaction here, my thoughts are exactly the same when someone writes "Why would we need permission?".

Exactly the same? My thoughts were "Well I don't think we should just take it, and we should always check with the author to see if they are okay with it"

The extreme over-extrapolation, crazed angry ranting about ideas that weren't even discussed or brought up, and run on sentences were very, very, very unnecessary.

I worded that oddly. I meant more like, nobody's going to ban you for converting a mod. We're converting an entire game anyway.

Besides, it would look silly to directly steal things from Tamriel Rebuilt. Using assets from a Morrowind mod would look terrible in Skyrim.

I'ts maybe unwritten but it's a moral and honor base rule and has been from day one that people respect other people work and seek the correct permissions and pay the need credit to the other persons work, we would not like it done to us. "Treat people as you would have them treat you" It's been that way since Morrowind and Possibly before, I can't speak of before. there a lot of moders gone by the way side because their work has bee ripped of Tribunal Robes is a good example

That type of action is just wrong

Oh wow, that's just fucked up. Not only did they steal his robes, but they're selling it on their shitty Second Life(people still play this shit?) server.

Okay, okay, my early post was kinda out of hand. In fact I didn't have emotions as intense as the one portrayed. But still every one needs to understand the gravity of the situation at hand. Passively saying "Oh we don't need permission" requires more then a simple "well ya know... we should get permission". I don't think I need to give an example. Still, even the idea "why do we need permission" is something that really needs to pass out of a knowledge.

it's a shame that the converter is failing at such basic technical issues at the moment. but i'm confident that in the future someone will get it worked out.

of course the mod itself is still WIP, but like i said before, i think at best you would be able to "only" convert the exterior/interior cells + meshes + textures over to Skyrim and have to recreate NPCs and questing on your own. so apart from adding new lands, i don't think future releases will feature changes to already existing content (mostly quests and such) that wouldn't be possible to convert anyway. so you might as well start as soon as possible with the already existing content.

i mean, just being able to walk the lands of MW-mainland in Skywind would be awesome. adding NPCs and working quests to these areas, that would probably be a bigger project than converting the maingame over.

I understand where you are coming from, but i don't think anyone ever considered to simply take the immense amount of work that the TR team have produced without even asking them and then do with it whatever they want without in the end even giving credit to them - let alone to make money with it. i think everyone here appreciates their work with the highest respect and will treat it that way.

I'm just saying, taking stuff without permission is a slippery slope. If the price of ensuring that we retain our morals and honor is sounding like a crazed lunatic then it's worth it. Saving skywind from becoming just another site that rips thing from hard working people, is more important then my own personal reputation here. That's why my above post is the way it is. You can disagree with what I said or say it an overreaction, but the way I see it ,when someone suggest that we take without permission(just because the creators don't legally own it), nothing is overreacting.

About the tribunal robes, didn't the author of the mod make it so anyone can use it? (like the witcher) It's stupid that someone would sell it though. Who the hell would buy it though?

...cough...cough...Morrowind in Oblivion and Skyrim...cough...Oblivion in Skyrim...ahem...slippery slope...weeeeeeeeeee

Happychappy is right. We are kinda doing it already with Morroblivion, Skywind and Skyblivion. But if TR gets converted, we wouldn't obviously take the credit for it. They said that it is fine on their stances page. And modders can use most of their stuff for their own modding projects (myself included).

I mean that is still a WIP and there are still loads of floating and carpeting items in the landscape. I did get the heightmap converted over and the statics are all there but there are two problems. Firstly I don't see any way to merge two worldspaces together and secondly land textures are ruined.

You won't need to convert TR because you most likely won't be able to finish Skywind before TES6 is out. Some people here don't really understand the amount of work needed to finish even basic Morrowind content. And there are also Tribunal and Bloodmoon which are completely untouched even in Morroblivion.

The same useless thread similar to those skyrim to skywind transition threads. When the time comes to convert anything else (somewhere 2-3 years in future) most people who are discussing it now will be long gone. Only Eloth will remain because he is cursed :)

I think we can finish Skywind before TES6. We just have to completely cancel Skyblivion (it's only a distraction), and not even touch the dlcs until all the main game stuff is done (they probably won't get done...again). It takes bethesda 3(-6) years to make a game. 1-2 years until FO4 and another 3 years after that to make TES6 (that's 4_5 years). Not to mention with ESO they might screw around because... "Oh, well the Elder scroll fans should be tied over by that mmo zenimax tossed at them"(if bethesda knew what the fans really wanted we probably wouldn't be converting the games now. They would just make "The Elder Scrolls HD")

Hmm, I would rather have Skywind and Skyblivion than just base Skywind and TR. I mean OpenMW can put in the Oblivion/Skyrim features that I want in Morrowind and it's just too mcuh work to port over nearly every single mod out there. Heck, I tried to convert over my own mod but most of the cells are messed up beyond repair.

And Skywind is making massive progress so I don't doubt that Bloodmoon and Tribunal will be ported over as well.

Edit: I guess I'm the only one who believes Skyblivion will get off the ground. I never even believed that Morroblivion would EVER get off the ground and get quests converted over. When I came back a few years ago, I was surprised to see a fully working main quest which resulted in faction quests to be converted over as well. It looks like Skyblivion is more likely than TR as there is far less work to do and we have a basic worldspace.
