Nordic Iron Plate Armour

Submitted by SheepDogWoof on

Inspired by three sets of Armour, Nordic Iron armour from Morrowind, Ancient Nord armour from Skyrim, and Nordic Steel Plate armour from Skyrim.

It's not finished yet, but this is how it looks so far.

And no, that isn't a bear skin cloak, he is just getting a bear hug from behind..

Hey I speak English as well, none of this American crap, so nice looking armour!

Only because I've talked to you on chat already about the armour, that I'm giving some constructive advice :)

I think the hips are looking a bit small, seems a bit of a snug fit to an already slender looking lower torso.

I'm not sure the clipping is going to work still with the breast plate being so wide and basically over the arms. I think with swinging sword motions that the arms will go through the breast plate. Will probably happen when you are running...maybe even when walking.

A string to tie the bear cape would be good, and you might want to indicate how those pauldrons stay on, they look like they are floating in space at the moment.

Wait, Canadians spell color and armor with a u? Odd, none of my friends from Canada did that.

Really I've always done it that way, what part were they from? Also lots of people are probably lazy and just spell it the American way

Yup I'm working on that right now, The pauldrons will be either strapped or nailed on. And the cloak will have some kind of rope or string holding it around the neck.

Ohh don't worry I take pictures regularly, wasn't sure if people wanted to see them all but I guess you do so here you go (:

^awesome!

Fur would look good under the pauldrons, especially for a Nordic theme. Check out the wolf armour in Skyrim for inspiration.

Stop spoiling all my ideas and reading my mind Happy!

I am putting a fur lining in the boots, gloves, under the pauldrons and maybe coming up from inside the collar.

remember to use basicmaterial when showing off screens, you're currently using skin shader and its hard to see the detail.

You'll be best off using pink/damstandard/slash/polish/trimdynamic to sharpen the amour patterns.

good job :)

O: Thanks I was wondering what would be the best brushes for metal/armour detailing.

was this in morrowind? or are you creating something all together new? either way its lookin good so far.

As I said in the main post it is a mixture of two armour sets from Skyrim, and one from Morrowind. I honestly think that sort of mixing should be done with all Nordic armour for Skywind. As Skyrim was really the game that set the Nordic style in stone.

I mean a LOT of Skyrim armour has the sort of swirly celtic runes, and it really is a staple of the Nordic style, where as the Morrowind armour looks like Medieval ring and plate mail. Nothing wrong with that, but I think some Skyrim style familiarity makes it more obviously nordic when you first glance at it.

Some may argue that "It is set 200 years before Skyrim so obviously they will be different"

Well if you look at Ancient Nord Armour, it's pretty clear that the style has been carried on allllll the way from the years when the First Dragon War was going on :P I'm just trying to be consistent with the lore.

Yes well... I could have just given that link... but I thought I'd just go on another of my "inside the mind of Sheepdog" tangents...

Polishing down the details now, I kind of like the rough look of the jagged edges, makes it look like a realistically hammered and bent piece of armour as opposed to a factory manufactured piece of metal

When I look at it, for some reason my head screams 'it's unnatural!'. I understand that we are remaking a fantasy RPG, but from the looks of it, I don't think I would be able to move 50 metres without exhausting myself in all the thick iron plates that you have made. Now, feel free to ignore this, because it is otherwise really good looking, but my suggestion would be to make it less bulky.

Other than that, you might want to make the breastplate more narrow, you will almost certainly get clipping issues while wieling 2H weapons.

Are you planning to add straps to the plates to make it look like the armor is possible to take off as well?

After looking at it some more I would say it might look better if the ridges adorning the armor werent so deep.

I agree the ridges are too deep. These ridges would add a lot of unnecessary weight (sure TES armor isn't that realistic, but we shouldn't break immersion).

The grooves would actually be efficient for cross slashing attacks, but for pointed attacks or missiles not so great.

If you imagine that it was tempered by hitting the inside of the armour to push out the grooves, the weight ratio is the same but you get the benefits of folded strength...physics 101...think egg carton strength.

But this type of craftsmanship would take an incredible amount of time to make...but it looks like Thor probably made the order, so I think the blacksmith would probably feel justified keeping a God happy.

Narrower breast plate, wider hips :)

That doesn't really make any sense :P armour is beaten and hammered out of a flat sheet of metal. It doesn't add or subtract from the weight. It just changes the shape for artistic detail.

Just so you all know though I am taking ALL of your suggestions into account and I recently restarted this armour from scratch. Learned a lot about hard-surface modeling recently, so much that I look back at this and all I can see are ways to improve it.

thinking of Nordic smithing, because its cold up in skyrim the metal would cool quite quickly so to add realism, would cracks in the armor be viable? :)

i really like it and all but i think only really good orc or nord smiths should have it on the main land or be on solstiem since its morrowind and the dunmer don't appreciate the nords too much

and should it be in the Advance armor smithing or have a new perk called Nordic smithing  where you can smith this nordic iron plate armor and anything else nordic

It seems to me this design would be impossible to do by hammering a single sheet of metal. Maybe I'm just unusual in that I like armors that look practical as well as cool. The thing I like about the original Morrowind design is that it has that flair, but it looks like you could actually make and wear it.

I agree. The over all design is cool it just needs a touch of anatomy esthetics and a bit of realism. I suggest studying Viking armor and adding your style to the mix.

you rock! remember to add crucial details. Since it's high class armor I'd say just give it a few chips and scratches here and there. If its common armor like regular Bandit Iron gear I'd say add a lot of battle marks to the weaker armor. If its something like daedric glass or ebony I wouldn't add a single imperfection.

I have nothing but respect for you guys for making this Mod. Great job so far. You are further than me!

Also I wouldn't say it's High class, nothing Nordic is really high class, you would expect axe marks and chips all over ANY kind of Nordic armour.

But i have no idea how cabal manages :) to get this results just playing with textures and maps.

To say the truth, I don't Cabal's retextures since New Vegas. He adds a lot of details, but at the same time makes everything darker to give a badass look messing the original art style. Don't want to see this in Skywind.

What I'm trying to convey is the fact that stronger materials would have less signs of wear and tear.
