[RELz] Molag Amur Region

Submitted by SquallyDaBeanz on

So, I'm currently working on the Molag Amur Region, and I wanted to get some public opinions before I start getting too crazy.

First off, due to Morrowinds design, it'd be hard to make a really detailed landscape without changing a lot of things. Before, Molag Amur consisted of a lot of rolling hills and rocks. It's difficult to make every hill or mountain that was climbable in Morrowind still be in Skywind due to the mountainous pieces and need for detail. Because of this, I wanted to create my own "sub-regions" in the area. For example, a boring set of hills could be turned into a Cliffracer nesting peninsula or an Ashlander bandit camp/fort. It would stray from the original, but the design needs to be updated with small areas to explore to keep it interesting. So, instead of just covering the hills with rocks and cliffs, generally keeping the same shape, I add new areas to discover. Of course, none of these are completed yet, and the first picture of each isn't detailed. Here's an example.

Very nice, I love all of these ideas. I'll get to work on them as soon as I can. I already have a few of these being worked on too Xd

Another example of what you can do with dragonborn cliffs (I really like the hexagonal platforms on the lava, looks like a tomb raider dungeon^^):

Everything doesn't have to be exactly the same as in morrowind. When game companies remake games, it's hardly ever exactly the same. Ever played heartgold or fire red?

Basalt pillars, nice, my geology heart is very happy. Just to be a little bit picky: basalt pillar appear in crystallized lava flows (they are kind of growing into the coldest direction = normally the top face of a lava flow) :-)

Dragons used to roam Morrowind, so I was thinking that a petrified Dragon would make an interesting feature. But also wanting it to look like part of the landscape I scaled this up by 3. So you could put quite a few old petrified dragon bones, but this guy got stuck in the mud and was sealed skin and all.

or you could put him right into the ground and most people would just think its a rocky outcrop.

I used the load screen "loadscreenalduinwall.nif"

That looks awesome, is there any way to do it with other dragons though? As Having a petrified Alduin is rather odd xD

Yeah, probably cut up a few of the models, as actually having the wings is not that realistic. Best to have it so torso and tail is intact, but the wings and head are petrified bone laying separate.

Hey, it's been awhile since I posted anything. And we wouldn't want this thread to be kicked off the main page, now would we? ;) Anyways, I've been busy with school and other things lately, so not much has been done. I have begun working on a burnt forest area, so here are some screen shots. Enjoy.

Amazing looking as per usual.

I have no criticism to give you, just continue what you're doin, how you wanna do it.

I have a feeling this will end up being my favourite region to visit.

Dude it looks so cool! Any idea when it will be finished?

One word, awesome! Keep up the good work! Can't wait to go there!

Still a lot of work to be done, but with summer coming up I'll (hopefully) have a lot of free time to work on it. I'll probably just continue to perfect it until the release of Skywind, unless I finish really fast and decide to help with another region.

I hope you will work on some other regions, too, so that they will also be really stylish and aesthetic like Molag Amur. Maybe if you also work on the northern Ashlands, there will be a nice, smooth transition into the harsher Molag Amur region.

I think you've done a brilliant job, by the way. I'm definitely going to spend a lot of time wandering this region when Skywind is finished.

This looks totally amazing and something that would be cool to see happen for all the regions.

Well that is the plan. We just need more people to sign up and do it!

I don't know if this is the right place to do model requests, but here are a few I could really use.

First, a cliff racer nest. I heard rumors someone was working on one, so let me know if you are. Right now, i'm using an oversized bird nest and it looks weird...

Second, huge tent flaps to cover small nooks and valleys would be cool. Think orgrimmar from WoW. Any and all tent variations would help for camps etc. I'll post a screenshot example

Not as important, but these would help too

- Any and all rock variations

- Dead vegetations

- Dead/knotted trees

- mountains/slopes/cliffs/caves etc

-  huge dragon bones

- Lava pillars/spires/ etc

Weren't there a bunch of petrified dragon bones included in the Dragonborn DLC? Just plain ones that looked cool and didn't ragdoll? Those would work splendidly, wouldn't they?

There are a lot of dead trees in the ressource I've posted on the top of the page. For the dead vegetations I'll try to send you some dead bushes from vurt groundcover (created for the ashlands).

about roof: i think girder must be less smoother. mb create them like a felled trees

Alright kiddies. It's summer and I have tons of free time to work on this region. I feel like a few screenshots weren't doing the region justice, so I have decided to release a small "alpha" of what I have so far. It's completely dull and only basic areas are there. Please leave me any feedback.

Keep in mind that it's FAR from finished. Things will be added, changed, etc.  Also, by looking around the area, you may ruin the fun of actually playing it in game, so don't bother unless you don't care and will give constructive feedback.

to get there, use the console command "Cow wrldmorrowind 16, -16"

Yeah that's a good idea, will need somebody to look into that.

Querty telvanni roots meshes, but retexured and shape made a bit rougher could do the trick for lava tubes...what do you think?

We have the hargraven tents from Skyrim, but they have been altered not to have the feather sticking out. Perfect little tents out in the wilderness.

You're my hero Happychappy. Those are sweet. I'll make use of them when I get a chance. Still, huge covers for valleys would be sweet.

@SquallyDaBeanz Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to see your work once I get home!

It looks great, but can I suggest that some of the yellowish ground textures need to be slightly greyer to blend in better with the normal grey rock ground textures.

@squally: it was supposed to be ash grass but you can use them as handplaced bushes too (could look great on the cliffs):

Of course you can change the folders

I'm actually working on some ash land trees right now. I'll post some pictures of them when I get the chance. there mostly suppost to replace the orginals from the game to avoid angry bethesda goblins.

Incase I'm not on for when the new update is being made, here is my ESP to be merged

hey Squally, Happychappy cleaned your esp last time, is this based on the clean version ?

I have a latest version for you to merge digital, but we need some sort of cut off because Squally continuously updates his plugins...like quicker than we are merging :-P

ok. I plan to put this in the next dev build.

TheMaskedFelon

Yeah, one time when I was playing Skyrim I ran across this small island off the northern coast of Haafingar, and it seemed like there was nothing there but mudcrabs and rocks. But then I noticed this flag on a hill, with a skeleton still clutching it. There was no explanation or journal or anything, but I think I spent around 20 mins. just walking around that island wondering what was so special about it. That kind of stuff has always been my favorite part of the Elder Scrolls games.

I know exactly what you are talking about!Found it round last time I played!

Molten rock for lava flows. Managed to make a glowing rock asset, but we need to decide what rock models we should convert and potential textures. Can get a few different styles going.

I don't like the way the lava sit unnaturally (we have same problem with rivers), but the molten rock finishes it off nicely i think.

There should be an brightness degradation from rocks in- / near the lava to the cool rocks away from it.

I like the glowing molten rock idea, but honestly, those textures are so ugly -.- maybe use the heartstone texture from dragonborn to do it?

Unfortunately the heartstone is specific UV mapped to its own rock, but also when trying to use a texture that is dark in color doesn't have the effect of glowing. You end up making the "rock" and "molten rock" both brighten and darken and it looks really bad. To get a specific effect you would need to have separate meshes for where cracks are rather than using a texture...not a complete impossibility...

...but in the mean time, getting closer to what I envision, a bit hard to see but essentially dirtcliff model with molten glow. On the left is painted on landtexture.

This is my favorite so far.

Afaik it is possible to apply the darkening shader to selected parts of mesh in CK.

I agree that the textures weren't looking great before, but they are looking better now, and the meshes themselves really do add a nice touch to the pool. Keep up the good work!

Hey all, I'll be gone on a trip for the next few days, so I won't be able to get any work done. I love what I'm seeing so far, so keep the ideas flowing. There are a few things I could still use however, so here is a small list of things I need done. These don't need to be finished anytime soon, it's just a checklist, so if you want to help, please say so and be sure not to double up on work.

- Ashgrass from vurts trees. I don't know if these are added as grass on landscape textures, or handplaced shrubs. Either way, I could always use more flora. Also, someone mentioned they were working on new trees, so I could use an update on that.

- A few assets from the dragonborn DLC would be helpful. Right now, all I need is the basalt cliffs and the dragon bone meshes, and anything else that would be helpful.

- Shadow of Morrowind uses a lot of lava assets I don't have, so if someone wants to look into that and convert those for me, that would be amazing.

- Any and all of the assets linked in this thread. Trees, bushes, rocks, etc, I could make use of any new pieces, so keep an eye out.

Thanks to everyone for all the support so far, and i'll try to stay in contact as much as I can.

And now, i'll leave you with a few screenshots to get yours mouths watering ;)

Some new ashtrees

Btw I've noticed that in dawnguard the lava has a large blur effect to show the heat, we should use it too.

Obsidian glass rock

Glowing rock

Lava burst. Actually this looks pretty bad in game, I've just recoloured water effects, and it needs a thicker consistency and it splashes around way to fast. I'm sure we'll get there with some tweaking.

Damn that looks awesome.
