Just a small texture idea

Submitted by ZeroSbr on

So I was thinking: for the actual texture size, could we (much later on) make a lite version of Skywind? Such as optimized 2k textures for all actors/creatures and armor/equipment/weapons, but then mainly use optimized 1k textures for buildings, landscape, and all the rest. I just thought it would be helpful for people like me that have decent video cards, but only 1 GB of VRAM.

Thoughts? Stupid? Yes/No?

sounds good, that can be your job.

Well there is already a link for a BSA packed 1k version of things, and really anybody can download the texture Optimizer and do this themselves.

I did a thread a while back about quality versus performance, and although I want to squeeze every last ounce out of getting Skywind as glorious beautiful version of the game, I'm also very aware of the limitations of the engine, just from personal experience of performance and stability issues. Basically we'll get things good but practical.

I don't think we'll do a specialized lite version, other than just using the texture Optimizer, just because of the limited amount of people on the project and time it takes. So rather than finding some 512k textures that may look better than a 1024k reduced, we'd just go with what ever the default Skywind one is. That is of course unless somebody wants to this work? echo, echo, echo...

i'd be willing to make every single texture 512p, but it would take ages to upload.

i attempted to resize the textures to 512p using texture optimizer but it gave me an error message for some reason. although i was using the bsa version of 0.7 so i'll try with the uncompressed version.

Don't do work that is pointless, do this when the project is finished. Every week new content gets added and stuff gets replaced. If you make this texture package you will need to support it update after update.

true that.

I know, I'll probably take on this project myself for both Skywind and Skyblivion when they get into their final stages. Until then, I'll try to get in on voice-acting for either/both projects. Though by the time I get the right equipment to VA, Skywind will probably be fully done as far as VA goes. Oh well. I'll just do texture resizing/optimizing and VA for Skyblivion.

I can almost assure you va won't be done any time in the near future there is A LOT of work to do

Well considering I'm about to blow some money on a new rig, and I'm jobless, I probably won't have any decent recording hardware of my own for a while. I guess I could get a few friends to join in the project who have the hardware, but meh.

Well, now that I'm actually looking through the textures, I think I saw like 5 2k textures, some 1k, and a heck of a lot of incredibly low-res textures. You guys don't need someone to make a lite version, the regular version is lite enough as it is. You guys need a professional texture artist to make a hi-res version of the assets or something, because honestly if you can't run Skywind as is for lack of VRAM, you just need to buy a better graphics card/computer. Sorry, but that's just how it is.

right now we are up to version 0.7, so obviously things will change all the way through up until 1.9 if we get that far before we start morrofell or hammerblivion haha.

Yeah, true that. I guess I'll just do it when the project is finished. Until then, I'll try other tasks. Sorry if I came off as rude.
